Friday evening, my oldest and I sat down and played a game of Suburbia. A game that after 4 plays or so has firmly entrenched itself into my Top 5. The reprint arrived on my doorstep on Thursday and I couldn't wait to try to get it to the table as soon as possible and much to my surprise, my daughter wanted to play. So in typical me fashion we set out and played a learning game for Gabby, and wouldn't you know it, the strategy that I helped her build beat the strategy that I used for myself, 89-80 and much to my surprise she really enjoyed it, can't wait to give it another whirl and see what she comes up with completely on her own. I was worried a bit about all the bookkeeping and scoring to keep track of but she handled it like a pro, even pointing out on a couple occasions when I missed something.

Sunday we played Tales of the Arabian Nights, Kerensa didn't join us because the three year old was sick and wanted some Mommy time so Gabby and I set out on our journey by ourselves, and boy, what a weird trip that was. I think next time we'll write down what exactly happens to us, it's just one encounter after another and it gets a bit hard to keep our narrative story straight, but it was good fun. Gabby made it back to Baghdad with her story and destiny points in hand despite being imprisoned at one point and crippled for nearly the entire game. Myself as Aladin didn't have such luck, my story took me across the map and back but the destiny points were not in my favor. At one point Gabby became Pursued because the person she rescued wanted to marry her, she looked at me and said, "I'm a warrior princess, I don't need a husband".

We wrapped up the evening with a couple rounds of Morels, a game that both of us quite like but I was surprised that she requested it. I won handily the first game and the second ended in a deadlock at 33 points a piece with no tie breaker game allowed due to it being bedtime.

I was planning on doing something a bit different with my entry this week and I still may do it, it just depends on whether or not I can get everything working. I wanted to do either an audio recap of what we played this weekend or possibly a video recap, nothing huge, just a couple minutes of me babbling about the games we played and possibly seeing if my daughter or wife wanted to chime in, but we'll see what we have time for this week. As it is, this Geeklist is going up early because I'm not sure what I'll have time to accomplish tomorrow while staying home with a sick child in the morning and then going into work in the afternoon when my wife takes over sick child duty.

Have a great week everyone!!

Three game nights in a row kicked off August for my husband and me!

Thursday night we played:

Tobago - first time playing. Really neat game with a unique way of locating the treasure. We'll be playing this one again for sure.

Sentinels of the Multiverse - Another new game for our group and wow! So fun! It took as about 5 rounds to get into the groove, but once we got there, it was sweet. Looking forward to many more games and I plan on adding the expansions asap.

Cartagena - Amusing filler game, but I apparently totally suck at it (it was my first time playing) and I lost badly! I don't think I'd suggest this game, but I may give it another try some day when it isn't 1am.

Friday night the following hit the table:

Catan - Half of the group (five of us) wanted to play this classic. As my husband and I have playing modern games for less than a year, we still love this game! I was happy to see some of the more established (more experienced?) gamers were into the game still. At this time, I just don't tire of it, even when I lose...badly...because I had to take our puppy out to potty and totally didn't see someone was within 1 victory point of winning...and I traded with her...blush

Elfenland - First time playing this one and I just loved it. The art, the playing style, the little bit of brain burn that happens, and the interaction with other players. Nice game!

Sushi Go! - I have this game on order, but someone else in the group brought it so I was very interested in trying it out. Loved it! First, the artwork is so stinking cute. I love happy sushi! The play is fun, quick, light, and quick. Yes. Very quick. Fun filler game that I know my husband and five year old are going to love to play with me.

King of Tokyo - I don't get tired of this game. I love big chunky dice and crazy monsters. I lost both games, but had fun throughout.

Saturday night was a lighter game night as we were playing with family friends who are just on the edge of becoming gamer family friends (plus we were playing with our five year old).

Get Bit! - Silly, random, amusing party game. Everyone was laughing through each game.

Zombie Dice - Our friends just LOVE this game and we're always up for playing it. Everyone gets into and it's fun to see how competitive and goofy we all get. Our five year old always has fun joining in.

Sentinels of the Multiverse wins as my favorite play of the weekend.

Lots of nice gaming this weekend. Actually we played all 3 nights.

Friday we had couple of non regular gamers visiting, so Formula D and Settlers of Catan were played.

Formula D - 1 play, 3 players
It's true what Formula D players say - most experienced drivers mostly win and it has nothing to do with luck of the dice. It was the case - win for me this time, although second place was close. Last place was taken by player, who brought car to the finish without single damage. Well, you have to push it to the limits. I for one barely made it with 1 tire, 1 brake and 1 gearbox left.

Catan - 1 play, 4 players
Very close game of Settlers, completely crowded map where I had place for 4 settlements only. Still managed to win the game with 4 cities and 2 victory point cards.

Saturday we played some games at home and after that payed a visit to our gaming group.

Hawaii - 2 plays, 2 players
Finally we tried Hawaii for the first time and it went great. Both of us enjoyed the game. I like the components - they look cool and really Hawaiish. Also the theme is nice - walking around the island using feet and buying stuff for shells, visiting other islands, fishing and so on. No idea, why Tom Vasel hates this game so much and says its like filling the spreadsheet. Actually his beloved Agricola is like filling the spreadsheet: you need this, and that, and also this one, otherwise you don't have points and so on. In Hawaii there are lots of ways to win the game. I tried 2 completely different strategies (won both of the times), but see a lot of discovering potential in game. Hope to play it with more players as soon as possible.

Infinite City - 1 game, 2 players
One play of this happened. Won by me, but everything can change so fast in Infinite City. One more turn and I would've lost with a big difference.

Tzolk'in: The Mayan Calendar - 1 game, 4 players
First time we tried this very popular game. Hosts had played it before, so we were the noobs in this one. It explains a lot, why one of them took the lead early and won with a huge margin. I got some strategy quickly and finished 2nd. The game's interesting and in many ways remind Age of Empires III: The Age of Discovery. And not only in worker placement mechanic. Talking about mechanics - the only innovative thing here is gears. In the end of the day it still comes down to getting resources and advancing in different areas. Nothing spectacular, but want to play it more.

Rise of Augustus - 1 game, 4 players
This game is very popular in our gaming group and asked to play all the time. Well, why not, since it's quick. 2nd place for me.

Maailmatrivia - 1 game, 4 players
World fact trivia game. Was very close, but with finish spurt I managed to take the win.

7 Wonders - 1 game, 4 players
It was night/morning already so everyone was very tired and no idea, how we managed to play this one. Don't remember lot of things about the game, but I know that I built only 1 part of my monument, totally failed in science and only military and civilization brought me to splitting 2nd-4th place. Leader was far away ahead.

Sunday we played couple of 2 player games at home. One of them was already described Hawaii, second one:
Small World - 1 game, 2 players
Of course, with all main expansions included. I had a good start with Peace Loving Kobolds (seems like this ability is very valuable if you are the first player and board is still relatively empty), which soon were changed to Catapult Pygmies and finished the game with Fortified Giants. Point advantage I got in the beginning of game was enough to end in 1st place at the end.

Overall very enoyable weekend of gaming.

After not touching the game for over a year, my wife and I got this on the table recently, and oh man, I forgot how much fun this game is. We played four games this weekend, my wife handling her mono tactics deck while I alternated between dwarves and a Aragorn (lore), Eowyn, Glorfindel (spirit) deck. This is one of the few games my wife will request playing, and one of the few games she will ask for 'One more game'. thumbsup

In the weekend I played:

Defenders of the Realm - Five games: three two-players and two-three players. We won both three-player games but lost all the two-player games: one of them was the shortest defeat we’ve ever suffered.

King of Tokyo - Two games: a five-player and a four-player game. I lost (badly) both of them.

Factory Fun - A four-player game: it was an easy success with some more than 80 points.

A single play of this (vanilla version) with my other half, I managed to get wiped out 11-6. It was a strange board, all the ore situated on difficult dice rolls, and despite having a couple of harbours, I found it near impossible to upgrade any of my settlements to cities for the extra points. I also lost the Longest Road card and really had no way to claw myself back into the game. When my SO built up the Largest Army, that was what.

While some of our games are pretty evenly matched in terms of winrates, my other half has a significant advantage in this one, but I still play to win. I just couldn't get my engines up and running...

Happy gaming!

We played a fair bit of Lord of the Rings this weekend. We introduced two friends to the game - she was a bit overwhelmed (which is understandable) and thought it was mathy, he liked it. It didn't help that I wasn't playing and I had the good-at-questing deck

On sunday I played a few games with Conlaen to try out each other's decks. It remains a really fun game!

1 x Eclipse with the expansion Rise Of The Ancients on Saturday.

It was a fun yet quite drawn out 6 player game. I like the elements the expansion adds. Might be giving this one a bit of a break for now but hopefully it will be getting table time again in the near future.

I had a very busy week, which involved flying, then flying again, then driving hundreds of kilometers. Still had time to play a few game though!

Saturday

Thunderstone: Starter Set (NEW)

I finally managed to try out the cards from the Thunderstone: Starter Set in a solo game, using the setup from the Thunderstone Advance: Towers of Ruin rules. The heroes were the Blackhand Thief, Garrison Fighter, Tower Mage, and Wildwood Ranger. The starter set has a fixed set of monsters comprising a hodgepodge of Bestials, Undead Virulents, and Giant Colossals, led by the Dragon Thunderstone Bearer Wraithlyn.

What I found out during the solo game was that light sources as well as attack bonuses are not much of a problem in this set. Many cards give off light, and the weapons in the set have quite powerful attack values. In addition, the heroes themselves have conditional attack bonuses, including the nice one from the ranger where she had +1 attack for each monster card in the same hand. As a result I was able to handle the monsters quite easily, winning with a score of 60 to Wraithlyn's 38!

OTHER GAMES PLAYED DURING THE WEEK:

Tuesday

The only other 2 games played during the week happened Tuesday afternoon, after my wife and I arrived in the hotel during my trip to the Northern Philippines. We had no schedule and didn't want to go out, so we ended up playing boardgames instead! This turned out to be the only time though since we really had a hectic sched for the rest of the trip!

Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small

We start by playing this quick game of animal farming. I again jump to an early lead with animals, but Betty makes up for this by building early buildings (including the Storage Building) and later building a lot of feeding troughs which enable her pens to hold a lot of animals. She manages to get a lot of sheep and horses for a hefty bonus, but again fails to get enough cows for another -3 penalty (she has done this in EVERY game she has played so far). Despite that her scores due to the sheep and horse bonuses plus the score for her Half Timbered House and Storage Building were more than enough to overcome her penalty as she beats me with a score of 53.5 to 44! That makes our duel in this game tied at 2 games apiece!

Betty's farm on the bottom, mine at the top

My wife proudly displaying her farm!

The Castles of Burgundy

This was the highlight game of the week for me, as I then teach this reputed "couple-friendly" game to Betty. She had initial difficulty in viewing the tiles due to the colors and she did take her time since it was her first ever game, but she soon got the concept of chaining tiles for extra actions and thus was into the game in no time. She got an early City Hall tile yellow bonus tile, and she was very fortunate in that a lot of City Halls came out, which she went for. She also did a lot of shipping, as she had a bonus tile for extra points for each goods shipped. In addition, she was the first to complete the Building, the Mines and Castles areas. I, on the other hand, focused more on cattle farming as well as shipping. The scores were very tight and it turned out her slight advantage in bonus points as well as better completion in areas JUST about edged me as she won by only 1 point, with a score of 196 to my 195!

Betty (red) 196 Me (blue) 195! 1 point victory for Betty!

This was not the weekend anyone plans for. My wife ended up in the ER twice and was admitted over the weekend. Things are stable and prayerfully she will be discharged in the next couple of days. We spent time with her and tryied to get some sleep for much of Friday and Saturday so we didn't get time for any games until Sunday evening when my brother in law dusted off M44.

Sunday
1x - [thing=10630Memoir '44[/thing]

We went into this with a 12-12 head to head record against each other. My BIL has always faired well playing scenario #10 Toulon - Campaign for Southern France, so he chose it... and won again this time he played the Allies and defeated me 6-4. Had he not finished things off when he did I was positioned in probably two turns to come back and win 6-5.

It was a nice break from the weekend's events. It was great getting to play one of my Top 5 games again.

Looking forward to getting through this coming week, seeing my wife back to 100% and hopefully enjoying a cup of coffee over a game or two with her very soon.

meeple Keep playing...

Thursday

Mice and Mystics - We continued our campaign and played two scenarios. First was Lily's Tail, this time with Nez, that makes a detour in the scenario unnecessary. We started well, then a few bad rolls made Tilda be captured, also a Spider gave the mice a real fight. But, in the final tile, Nez beat three rats at once and Collin and Lily put the Centipede down. The next scenario, The Grapes of Rats, we had a discussion if we should go with Tilda or not. We decided to leave her out. This made for a tense scenario, where Collin and Nez had to, sometimes, be in the back, due to their injuries, and the range weapons of Maginos and Filch made a big difference. In the end Vurst spilled the grapes and the mice learned about Vanestra's plans. I'm really enjoying the way the scenarios are developed.

Friday

Hanabi - It was the debut of the game, and I played it four times. I was a little worried about the "stay quiet and hold your cards" when isn't the player turn, but we still talked, just not about the decisions of the other players. Hanabi worked well, and everyone that played it, liked it. I'm still concerned about the replay value - since the plays are somewhat similar one to another, and by now I can't say the if the challenge to get one or two more points will be enough to keep the interest.

Family Business - My last play of this one was quite some time ago (for my standards). But when someone suggested a light game of high confrontation, well, Family Business is the answer. We played two times. In the first one, the kill-mode was full on, and the game ended in about half hour. In the second one players were more careful - the Vendetta card made only one appearance (in the first game, it was played two times) - but the game lasted almost the same, since in one play, one of the players ended the life of 13 mobsters! This was indeed a St. Valentine's Day Massacre!

PLAGUE: The Card Game - Our trick-taking of choice - that I just can't manage win. I ended up in last, but in the final 4 rounds, I won one and came second three times (which don't count for nothing, but show that I do know how to play, just not enough to actually win more). It was a great game nevertheless, with one of the players coming from a 0-0-2-2 position (I was the other zero) to win with 4-3-2-1.

Cosmic Encounter - A long game that, by the end, one of the players was in the "f-it-mode" and the other had left the table in the last encounters of it. We thought the problem was in two flares: one from the Schizoid and other from the Macron. The former was a real game crusher (player exchange their home systems, which can make someone with 4 colonies go to zero - and this happened in the game), but the second, that prevented me from winning no less than three times, was played wrong - so the fault is on us. Even if the last half hour of the game sucked, the first 90 minutes was really fun, so, overall, I don't regret playing it.

Friday
Lost to my daughter at Caldera.

Saturday
She narrowly beat me again at Caldera.

Then she beat me twice at Hive. Finally, I won a game of Hive against her.

In the evening, we played a game of The Awful Green Things From Outer Space. At first we were both terribly lucky. I rolled a 6 for initial population and a 6 for placement. Then she did discovery with a single crewman who used two dice to attack a baby and got the boxcars she needed.

Things after that were more difficult for the crew, though. Knives and fire extinguishers caused the monsters to fragment, and the rocket fuel was carefully guarded by adult monsters. Eventually, the crew decided to escape. They couldn't set the self-destruct because the command crew were already dead except for one badly-placed pilot. One crewman left in the saucer, but ended up caught by a black hole. Two more left in the scout, but eventually succumbed to space plague.

Sunday
We beat Shub-Niggurath together in Elder Sign (with the Unseen Forces expansion. Investigators Marie Lambeau and Leo Anderson won with 12 Elder Signs when the doom track was only at 8. We got into a scary pit at one point, with three other worlds adventures available, but Shub-amped monsters everywhere. We got A Fresh Start from the mythos deck, which probably rescued our bacon.

The final showdown was in Yuggoth, where Marie tried first, and defeated a monster without succeeding at the adventure. Then Leo arrived all blessed, wearing cult robes, and riding a shantak! Those two Elder Signs were ours.

Goat came by for some Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game. Our first two games were with monofaction decks: his Twilight deck Silver City and my Cthulhu deck Snaketastic. He won the first game, although we both made some terrible blunders in it. I won the second, and we tabled the grudge match. Then we played two games to pit his new Bug Hunt deck (Misk/Shub with Mi-Go) against my On the Take (Agency/Syndicate). In the first game, Bug Hunt was leading with two stories to none for On the Take, but they had overextended to get there, and On the Take soon won all three non-conspiracy stories in play in a single turn. On the Take also won the final game of the evening.

3rd anniversary of the BLOC game group. There was a pot luck and game giveaway, and then it was off to the Warriors 3 game store afterwords.

Started off with a 9 player game of Panic on Wall Street!, which turned into an 8 player game when one of the fund managers did not get many investments and left the table with a shout of "You are all idiots!" We just kept on playing without him and it became the catch phrase for the day. Pretty funny. The game itself is kind of a mad rush during a timed two minute period for investors to invest in different companies of the managers whose prices can go up or down at the roll of a die. At the end of the game, the investor and manager with the most money both win. I got last out of the group of managers.

After that, four of us played a game of At the Gates of Loyang. It was a long game, since we had two new players, and another who had only played once. But I did get my best score ever, a score of 19 points with 18 coins left. Two more coins, and I would have hit that fabled 20! I just happened to get the right mix of customers and helpers, and used up my helpers and stalls whenever possible to get the free two-packs. It was the game of a lifetime and I'll probably never get that mix of cards again.

At the game store, we played a game of Tzolk'in: The Mayan Calendar, again with two new players and one player that has played before. The monument from Mini Expansion 2 came out, and I built it on the last turn of the second quarter to get 31 points out of it, which secured my victory at the end.

The final game of the day was an 8 player game of 6 Nimmt! which I had never played before. This game is a great large group party style card game, we had lots of cheering and laughing as players narrowly avoided taking rows of cards, and others got stuck with them. Lots of fun, and I ended up winning!

On Saturday, my girlfriend's brother invited us to come over for a game of 1830: Railways & Robber Barons. It was the first time I tried my hands on a 18xx game. The game lasted for almost 8 hours and I ended up last (of 4 players).

It's an interesting game, but it takes too long to play imho.

Got in one play of Warhammer: Invasion – Cataclysm. This was the first play using Cataclysm and was a three player game. This game took 3.5 hours to play! surprise It wasn't a fault of the game, it was one of the players taking forever on his turns and asking the same rules questions over and over. Ugh. Anyway, the game itself is really good and the Fulcrums worked well for making it into a multiplayer game.

After this the slow player wanted to play it again, but I couldn't handle another 90 minute game jammed into 3.5 hours so we switch and played Galaxy's Edge. It was a fun game with simple rules, but nothing earth-shatteringly new. I wouldn't add it to my collection, but I'd probably play again.

Finally, Rialto showed up on North American shores. I played it twice, both times with four players. It's an interesting game, easy to play and teach, but with some depth. Not as meaty as Bora Bora, I see this coming out when something a bit lighter is called for.

This game has become a welcome weekly regular.

After a three week hiatus, I got NA back to the table. It was a 4P, which is not quite as good as 5, but was still a lot of fun.

I bought this a few weeks ago, and finally managed to play. Targi is a good worker placement with an interesting mechanism I have not seen before. It plays in under an hour and has quite a bit of strategy.

Last but not least, I played a 3P game of Macao. I'd only played once before. I had forgotten what a fun game this is.

I am making an attempt to get some of my unplayed games to the table.

Taluva was this week's effort, which I played with two of my friends.

I'd heard it was good, but hadn't realised how lovely, subtle and clever it actually was. It was good enough that we saw the appeal even though we initially read the rules incompletely.

Saturday was "Honey Do Day" and Sunday we loaded up the kayaks and hit the lake. (What a great day on the lake!)

So, only played Friday night with the guys and what a strange mix of gaming it was!

While we waited for others to arrive, I taught Targi to one of my group and we got a game in. I like this game more and more every time I play it. Near the top (if not at the top) of my 2-player favorites.

Next up was a 3-player game of Lords of Waterdeep. One thing about this game, it doesn't appear to outstay its welcome. Every time I play this game it seems to end very quickly. There's never enough rounds left to get everything done that I planned. Not a bad thing...just an observation.

hahaha...sorry, I just laugh thinking about Der schwarze Pirat. One guy in our group has an affinity to these type games and always surprises us with something new. This is a crazy little pirate game where you have a wooden ship with a cloth sail on the board in your color, plus a black pirate ship. The goal is to collect gold coins spread around the board. On your turn you roll two die. One adds gold to the board and the other tells you whether you move the pirate ship or your own ship. How do you move it...with this 'puffer device'! (I apologize ahead of time for this image...but the best way to describe it is to tell you we used to use one of these things to clean out our kids noses when they were too young to blow.) hahaha What else is there to say? It's a cute kids game that gave us lots of laughs Friday night.

I then was introduced to Ascending Empires. I pride myself in flicking/dexterity games, so this one appeared right up my ally. However, the joints of the puzzle-like board made this game frustrating. I know this is a problem with this game, but I had never gotten a chance to play until now. It makes you think about making your own board. I do like the game and ended up winning! I attribute this win to the others not worrying about the "new guy" and the difference in the score appeared to be due to my presence in all four quadrants.

Ended the evening by showing them my homemade version of Step by Step and getting a play in. Saw this game and thought it would be a fun press-your-luck game to add to my collection. Had all the pieces, so just created a quick board so I could test-drive the game. We enjoyed it. It's sort of on the same order as Can't Stop, or at least that's what we kept comparing it to. I'll get a few more plays in before I decide, but will likely buy this one.

#1

Plays: 5

Descent
1 Exploding with theme!
2 Amazing quest design
3 Highly strategic
4 Incredibly addictive
5 Tactical skirmish fun!

Played the Labyrinth of Ruin expansion campaign. First impression, the initial quests seem to add more complexity and slightly larger map as compared to base set's Shadow Rune campaign. For example, the villager tokens in the intro encounter. It adds (time-waster) another mini-game where you roll a brown die after every hero's turn. Villager token blocks Line-Of-Sight, does not block movement, but figures cannot end their movement on the token. Also, combat between heroes and goblins is not allowed if they are adjacent to a villager token. Villager tokens can also bump heroes one space. As such this seem more as a mechanism to assist Overlord.

1. Place villager token at bottlenecks. Heroes will not be able to block movement.
2. Use villager to knock heroes around. Opening paths for goblins.
3. Use villager to protect goblins.

However, in practice, it is more random and fiddly than useful. The encounter might as well provide another open group. OR, allow the Goblin Scamper ability.

Need more plays to confirm on my impressions.

Having said that every game of Descent continues to be an awesome experience. So of the games are so tight you don't know who will win until the last round.

Descent 2.0 is my #1 game

Check out my review:
RPG in a box (An extremely long-winded review of my #1 game)

#2

Plays: 2

Pandemic: On The Brink
1 Good box. Fits basic set.
2 Nice modular design
3 Adds difficulty
4 More roles!
5 Seems to add more fiddly, not necessarily more fun [-]

Had a chance to break out the expansion. Very impressed with the box insert of On The Brink. Fits everything from the base set.

Expansion is modular and you can choose which module to add. I played the virulent virus and mutation virus. They both added difficulty to the basic game. The new roles are great. We identified two roles which are very powerful, and had a good time. Won once and lost once.
