After having spent half a year in China, studying in the University of Beijing, I returned to my hometown in Germany yesterday. During my stay in Beijing, my love for boardgaming (wargaming) didn't stop, even evolved, and I even bought one or two on eBay for great prices. As I am quite interest in the American Civil War, I was looking for something to get into that, my focus was on the more tactical look (something at 200-100 yards per hex). Of course I came across the Civil War Brigade Series, and thought I should give it a go. But as it always is, especially when not being into wargaming for too long, learning new rules can be a tough thing (CWBS was not in the end, but anyway), so I thought I should inform myself which title is good to begin with and doesn't face you with too many special rules. A thread was born:

The first one to answer was:

He recommended No Better Place To Die, one of the older titles of the series, released in 1992. He thought it should serve me well due to the short scenarios and low counter density. After a few posts more, he said he would just send me his copy, having too many games and not the time to replay it any time. Of course I first refused via PM and told him I'll pay him something for the game, but he kept stubborn, and had some arguments anyway. End of the story, however, is that I gave him my German address, but telling him he does not have to hurry in any way, as I won't return before August....that was back at the end of June.

Back to the beginning of the story. Yesterday I returned from Beijing. Our plane was said to take off 13:20 Beijing time and land in Germany at about 18:30 German time. There were some issues with that and an unplanned landing in Moscow, finally I was not home before 01:00 in the night. Not prepared for anything, I entered my room (in my parents house, it was more convenient than driving to the city were my flat is)...and I got a shock. There was a huge pile of games on my table. I asked my parents where they did get all that stuff. They told it all came in one big package. That was when I discovered No Better Place To Die in the pile, and I understood. Eker didn't just send me one game, he sent me six of them...and all I want to do now is just to say a thank you...Thank you Øystein, you made this return to home a great surprise, which hit me unprepaired!
The best thing I can do, is to do the gift justice and play all those games with the love they deserve. With this geeklist I want to share my experiences with the games, while I play through them...and I don't think I will get out of my room in the next few weeks....

Edit:

A picture of all the treasures!

This was the original intent of the whole gift, No Better Place To Die, I am currently setting up the full battle scenario, which starts on the 30th of December and goes all the way till the 2nd of January. The battle might sound like a long affair, but that is due to the fact that the two enemies did not fight each other for two days after the initial 30th December. This, of course..I am setting it up, will be my first one that I play. And it will be a fantastic experience, the CWBS is such a great series.

A classic, and a monster with about 2000 counters and three maps (where do I take the space for this monster? ). The game, in its second edition, was published 1986. I had a look into the boxes (into them all), and everything looks like mint condition. Eker is someone taking care when treating his games. When I am going to play this, I will propably play through one scenario after the other, due to space constraints. There are a lot of one map scenarios, and maybe I'll get the space for the full battle after that somewhere!

The classic. Mark Hermans take on the Civil War from a CDG perspective. I was close to preorder the reprint from GMT for quite a few months now, but always refused for some reason. And here I am holding an unused copy in my hands, not even punched. The rules will give me hell, I am pretty sure, but I should be able to make my way through (I have played a few CDGs already after all). Eker made sure my Civil War obsession is cured after playing his games.

The oldest one in the package, and the one showing where the modern gaming box comes from. 'Bookcase game' says the side of the box, and looks like a book from the same period. I instantly discovered the city I was born in on one of the maps (mounted!). Same for this game as for For The People, except for a few chits, most is still unpunched. My first arial game!

I nearly picked up a copy of 'Spanish Eagles' on eBay, I just forgot to place my bet on the last day of the auction. The set up game looked interesting and the graphics were beautiful. Again, as with For The People, there is this coincidence. Eagles Of The Empire should be easy to get into (12 pages of rules...though I don't really now anything about it as of yet), and the next entry makes sure I don't get through it too fast!

The second one of the Eagles Of The Empire. This one focuses on Napoleons battles during his campaigns in Egypt. All in all four battles are in this small box, the battle at the Pyramids, Cairo, Mount Tabor and the well known battle of Aboukir. I read through a special issue of a German history magazin, which was about Napoleon. One of the focuses was on the whole Egypt adventure. Can't wait to see the history on the battlefield!
