Ok, this week let's explore the history close to your home (i.e. where you currently live). Let's talk about people, places and things near to where you live (how about a 125 mile/200 km limit) and why they are of interest to you.

Feel free to go further afield or to a place where you used to live if that helps.

People

Is there a historic figure you are impressed by/ interested in near your home? Perhaps it is someone that is a legend only to the locals or someone currently alive that you find fascinating for some reason.

Things

This is a catchall. Is there something near you that isn't a town, hamlet or city that catches your attention? Maybe some caves, or a real cool house? What is it about the thing that makes you want to tell us about it?

This is the week that was:
Circus Train (Second edition) 1
Keyflower 1

My love affair with Circus Train continues, and likewise for Keyflower. And conveniently, a gaming evening can usually accommodate both. Especially once everyone has played them at least once.

I have begun to really notice my aging eyes. I'm not that old, but I am now in the era of the reality of reading glasses and I'm finding it harder to read tiny print on counters and tokens in less than ideal lighting conditions.

I mention this because the performance counters in Circus Train have a lot of information in them - there are seven types of performance talent and any performance counter (aka news counter) has all seven talent shapes on it and inside the shape is either an x meaning that particular audience doesn't care about that kind of talent or a number representing how much they want to see that type of talent. And since I'm spending a lot of time looking at those counters, I'm really noticing that when the lighting isn't ideal that I'm having trouble.

So the solution is clearly to get some better lamps around my dining aka gaming table.

This Thursday I'm flying off on my vacation so you won't see me until I get back some time towards the end of August. I hold you guys accountable for keeping the list going while I'm away!

A few new game acquisitions this week:

Kingdom Builder: Crossroads - the latest expansion for KB; I'm not sure if this was a good buy; it's basically more of the same.

Dark Empire: Revolution - a small card game produced in small numbers via a German crowdfunding site. Looks interesting, although the first reviews and opinions were mixed.

Eight-Minute Empire - see below

Raiding Parties: Brethren Of The Coast - I think this was a dud. Small card game, nice cover. After I've read the rules ... hrmpf. Play a card and roll a dice sums it up.

Played this week:

No game night, but some gaming with my wife on the patio, as the weather is still great here and we still have this week off!

We had another game of Relic and four games of 7 Wonders.
We also tried out Eight-Minute Empire; well that's a nice little empire building game - you can really do this in 8 minutes and it's fun! More on the Eurogame side, but nevertheless! Wonderful filler.

Yesterday Andrea wanted to play a game from the Empire Builder Rail Games series again, and we choose China Rails. The hardest thing is not winning, but finding all these cities on the map!

Cheers!
Ron.

Rallyman x1

Played a shortish 3-stage Rally with a friend and lost control too many times and ended up coming in several minutes late. Very fun game, but prone to AP for players prone to that. But I'm looking at buying another dice set to avoid havin to pass the dice over the table all the time.

Started working and that was ok.

Bill (billyboy) and I have played a couple of sessions of this fine game. Be warned - the components in the current vassal mod for To the Last Man are not identical to those in the game.

Andean Abyss PBF is moving along, the league of independent patriots (that's me the AUC) only has what's best for Colombia in mind.

In Angola, we have had a turn go by with nearly no combats; all four sides obviously feel unwilling to take a risk very late in a very close game.

Pax Romana, some things have happened but Greece's name hasn't been drawn lately.

My War of the Suns solo game is about 1/4 finished. It's long, and I haven't had the time to do much with it recently, though I hope to get some moves done this weekend. (It's Tuesday and already I want it to be the weekend...)

x2 Hive (8.5)
x1 1889 (8.7)

Well, the move went well. Cati and I are now back on the near north side of Austin. The apartment is nice enough and is well sized for us. I'm working furiously this week to get my UK trip in order and find places to stay and get permission to look at the archives.

As for games, Cati and I managed a little set of Hive rounds which was enjoyable. Then, on Sunday, I had a couple folks over for a teaching game of 1889. The game went over well and was pretty fun. They are both considerate players so even though it was a teaching game, it had some interesting moments.

My school ended up being 1100 lower than listed her due to a double withhold and D purchase which rusted out Blue's only train, forcing me to buy as the last action of the game. The gambit didn't pay off in time to make a difference but it was a good impulse.

However, as I was cleaning up at the end of the game I realized that I must have knocked my little share price markers because Blue shouldn't have gone last and therefore wouldn't have been affected by the rusting. During the game I thought this was the case, but decided to let it stand as it now appeared for the the sake of demonstration.

My biggest mistake in the game was a premature dump of Takumatsu (red) which the dumpee manged to work into a bit of a dynamo in the late game. I dumped it in order to fund my purchase of teal which synergized with green nicely so no real regrets there.

The week ahead:
survival
maybe some games of Mage Knight.

The scenario for this week is based on the epic battle scene at the climax of the film Gunga Din:

In this image the British column is marching on Khyber Pass, shortly before Gunga Din blows the bugle.

Last Five Weeks:

Kill Doctor Lucky... and His Little Dog, Too! x5
Guillotine x5

Misc:

- Just got back home from my summer sojourn. Had a great, relaxing time. Read a lot. Walked along the beach. Swam like a fish. Snorkeled. Ate ocean stuff until it was coming out my ears. Now we are back to the "real" world. Sigh ...

- We did bring some games, but then came across a small store that had a number of offerings. So we picked up the Dr Lucky game and Guillotine, which turned out to be the ones we ended up playing.

- I had played Guillotine in the past and liked it. An amusing little game with just enough brain burning after a long day in the sun drinking daiquiris. We had two people playing it and now I would like to try it with three or four. Well.... three I suspect would be ideal?

- Kill Doctor Lucky was more of a whim purchase. Played that one with three people, but I think it would be better with five or so. Again, it was pretty light fare which is fine for a late night summer experience.

- I took the rules for a couple of games with me to read. One dealt with my ongoing search for a "big" Fall game to play solitaire. So I read up on the Civil War Brigade Series with an eye to selecting one of my three games from it. I really liked what I was discovering about it, so I think I will go that way perhaps with the Seven Pines scenario (well, one of them).

- I also took along the rules for Fire in the Sky: The Great Pacific War 1941-1945 which is something that Wendell and I had expressed an interest in playing upon my return. It looks quite intriguing as well with lots of gears and pulleys to play with. It was a bit difficult to grasp though without the game or the module in front of me, but I saw nothing to scare me away from it.

- I see that my Cuba Libre and A Distant Plain preorders have been delayed, which is not the end of the world as I feared that they might arrive while I was away. Looks to be in September now.
