May 7-8, 2005 One year after the first box is released. 13 players play a WoW game in the "Weekend Enogastroludico" ("WineFood&Games Weekend") convention in Piedmont, Northern Italy, with one plane each - a feat requiring three boxes. They start, without knowing it, a competition for the largest WoW game session: when I post around the picture you see on the left, first of all on BGG, I find amusing to caption it "The Largest WoW Game Ever". And so...
May 22, 2005 ...Somebody takes it "seriously". A couple of weeks later at Mucca Games, a player’s gathering held in Tarquinia (central Italy), 22 players fight with a plane each on a table maybe 4/4, 50 meters large and about 80 cm deep. The "scenario" chosen to play has been "War is a big mess", designed for the occasion: all the A firing fighters and B/B firing two seaters are thrown on the same table in a huge dogfight.
October 9, 2005 The Reindeer Corporation - 3M Roma club organizes a game convention within the Italian Air Force Museum of Vigna di Valle, just north of Rome. After visiting the museum with an aviation officer explaining the history of the many machines here preserved, and after a lunch at the military base canteen, a game of WoW is held in a hangar among the real historic planes. It sets a new record of 25 players with one plane each.
January 21, 2007 At the Scout Hut of Saltdean, near Brighton, on the southern England shores, 21 players gather at the same table: a few less than in Vigna di Valle, but some of the experts take two planes each and a 33 planes battle follow, so the "largest game ever" record is their. In future attempts, the limit of one plane per player is strictly kept.
February 21, 2007 The organizers of PisaCon, in Tuscany, Italy, decide to beat both the number of pilots and the quantity of airplanes. They manage to feature a 34 people battle, one plane each, that for nearly a year stays as the absolute record.
November 2007 The largest miniature game ever is organized by Richard "Cuzzle" Johnson at the BBG-CON, Westin Dallas Fort Worth Airport: 27 miniatures, beating a presumed previous record of 19. But with airplane cards, Pisa still rules. At least until...
January 26, 2008 47 players fight a battle with a miniature each, on a 6 meters long table, at the LeiriaCon in Portugal. This becomes the largest ever Wings of War game for the highest number of pilots, the highest number of planes and the highest number of miniatures. Future attempts will try to break all these records together.
June 14, 2009 During the PisaGioca fair 81 people (65 male players and 16 female), play at the same table in a square of the city center. Some of them are real veterans from several Italian cities, bringing their own wonderful collections of personalized miniatures. In the end, only a single Allied plane is flying over a plain scattered by wrecks. The Pattuglia Acrobatica Nazionale (Italian Acrobatic Team of the Italian Air Force) flying over the site at the end of the game seals the new record.
May 5, 2013 The game changes name, new planes and packs are released. During the Si Gioca game convention held in Ferrara (Italy), an attempot is tried in the historical center, besides the Chatedral. "Only" 80 people take part, so the WoW record is not beaten. But it's the "Wings of Glory largest game ever" anyway.
organizes a more than 20 meters long table, reprinting official mats with the logo of the show and the one of his shop, on the banks of the Arno river. 100 people come to play: basic rules, eliminated players can re-enter with half the original damage points. Entente wins: 19 German planes shot down, 10 Entente planes shot down, 4 Entente planes exit from the table.
