2013 Gen Con has come and gone.

I spent only about 20 minutes in the dealer hall (a new low for me), and I purchased only an $11 expansion ship for my son for our Star Wars X-Wing game. Even so, this was my favorite Gen Con to date. Why? Lots of gaming, time spent with old friends, and meeting some new gaming buddies.

This is a geeklist to help me remember my time at Gen Con 2013.

Feel free to comment.

, his friend Marshall, and his brother Josh for a 5P game of Indonesia.

I have taught this favorite of mine every Gen Con for the past four years. Each time, I have lost to one of the newbs. This year was no exception (I must be a good teacher ). Most new players shy away from the mergers, but Marshall dove right in and used them well. I overspent on a Siap Faji merger allowing him to merge together a rubber monopoly and steal away my lucrative rubber company. I think this proved to be the difference.

It was a reasonably close finish:

1300ish (Marshall), 1175 (Mark), 1163 (Josh), 1000ish (John), 600ish (Jay).

It was nice meeting and gaming with Jay, Marshall, and Josh.

Thursday 8:00 AM

My friend John had some RPG seminars on Thursday so I decided to occupy myself by attending the 8:00 AM 18xx event in the Puffing Billy area.

I got grouped up with two other guys (Ed and Dave... I forgot their last names) for a 3P game of 1846.

I got meat packing and Chicago & Western privates and start IC. Dave had MS, O&I, and started GT (he had priority). Ed started NYC and had Big 4 and mail contract.

I had prez of IC and B&O. Ed had NYC and PRR, but lost PRR to Dave. IC had top stock value followed by NYC. NYC had top run at 83 (including mail) IC was next at 81.

Final scores were about 7400 (Mark) to 6900 (Ed) to 6500 (Dave)

About 4.5 hours start to finish.

Thursday Evening:

Our buddies Shawn P and Shawn S arrived at Gen Con in the afternoon. After exchanging some games with BGG trade partners John, the Shawns, and I decided to play Innovation in the hotel lobby. I taught the game to the rest of the gang.

John used Pirate Code to great effect and won with four Achievements to my 3.

called during Innovation to see if they could join us for a game. So, he and his friend John came to our hotel to join John, Shawn, Shawn, and I for a 6P game of Eclipse.

John D wins over Rusty by about 7. I was 17 points back in third. There were quite a few battles. John D. destroyed my fleet in the 3rd to the last turn.

We finished up after 2:00 AM.

Friday Noon

Friday was my only day to sleep in, so I got up at 9:00 AM, exercised, had a casual breakfast at Panera, then got ready for my noon Die Macher event.

Rusty had purchased tickets for us to try this game that many of our Geekbuddies like. Neither of us had played before. In fact, of the table of five, only 1 had played previously, the instructor. To my surprise I edged out the instructor on the strength of the final bonus points.

Interesting game. I like it, but don't love it on first play

After Die Macher, I had just enough time for a quick dinner before my 6:00 PM 18OE event. It was a learning game in which the publisher

and I.

It was a good time. There was a bit much to absorb in the first game, but I liked it. I am glad that I joined the kickstarter. We didn't finish, but I think I was destined for third. We stopped the game about 11:00 PM.

It was nice to meet Ed and Mark. Good guys.

Saturday 7:30 AM

Again with Ed and Mark. This time the full game.

We met early to setup and get an early start only to have to move to another table, and then later have another event host try (unsuccessfully) to claim our table space.

We did eventually get rolling.

Wow! Lots of stuff going on in this one. A bunch of companies. The initial auction is crucial. I like it! We played about 10 hours and probably had 3 more to go when we called it on time. Mark F was surely destined for a large victory (no surprise!). I think I would have finished second (maybe). I had some impressive OE runs from Paris to Constantinople. One of those companies also had lucrative routes in S.England. A couple of Mark's companies had really impressive runs originating from lower England. Ed, whose companies were concentrated in the east, had the first OE run from Moscow(?) St. Petersburg. Fun stuff!

Saturday 9:30:

After 18OE, I joined my buddies John, Shawn, and Shawn at their hotel where they were playing Dungeon World with some other friends. I joined mid-quest. We fought some lizard men and a dragon. We were victorious! I rolled a bunch of misses. I have bad dice karma. It all was very amusing. This was my only RPG of Gen Con 2013.

for a game of 1846. Ed H joined us to make it a 4P. It was my first time gaming with Ed H.

I got Big 4 and Mail Contract. Adam had priority, the MS, and M & C so he floated GT. Mark F then chose B&O. I have too little cash to protect a company, so I pass to see what Ed does. Ed starts NYC, so I start the IC, par at 70 and buy 3 shares. GT gets off to a roaring start with an early E-W run. B&O also has a strong start. It looks like the game will be Adam's. The rush through the Green Ts is fast, so much so that when IC withholds to buy first brown, Ed's privates evaporate before he can buy them in. That set Ed back quite a bit. The GT runs out of steam a bit late in the game. It's last 2 runs were only good for a double then single jump. Meanwhile the IC manages to score a 7/8 to go with his 4/6 and is able to get 2 E-W runs originating in the SW (one through Wheeling, one to Ontario via Detroit and Port Huron). This give IC the largest runs in the final 3 ORs and allows him to nearly catch GT in stock value (1 back). This plus the cash payout catches me up to the leaders.

Final scores:
1a. Mark G (7679)
1b. Adam (7636)
3. Mark F (7300ish)
4. Ed (forgot his score)

Close! That's a tie in my book.

About 4 hours including setup and tear down.
