Back in July, I put up a recommendation post and ended up getting this and Birth of a Legend. The rules look like they have a lot of similarities. I have this one set up and the game pieces scanned for a future Vassal module.

Larz and I continue our 2nd game of this. We are toward the end of 1863. I was doing pretty good until this turn. My strategic will was in the high 30s, but I had only lost A.S. Smith and the border states. Every time he made a big push through Tennessee, I moved behind him and sucked up those PC markers with the Army of the Tennessee led by Stonewall Jackson and aided by Morgan's cavalry (meaning when he tried to attack me, I got away on a 1-5: I was employing a Washington's War-like strategy). I had a big chance to put away U.S. Grant and the Union Army of the Tennessee. He was down to 3 strength points left and had no cavalry, but I couldn't draw the campaign card needed to steal initiative, so he got away. Since then, I've pulled 2 blunders that pretty much allowed him to take Tennessee and Arkansas.

Amazing game. Looks like a tough go for the Union. It scares me think about how I'll do next time I am them.

In the first game, I am playing:

I tried to implement a New England strategy. He's pretty much immune to my psychological games. He's flustered me every step of the way with a convenient card, interception or retreat. It's like those silly Yanks don't wish to be pacified. Still, I'm not doing too badly, controlling Rhode Island, Connecticut, Canada, New York, and Delaware, but it's going to be a $%%#% to hold them all.

In my other game, I am playing my old Jedi master:

Greg Schmittgens
United States

Who taught me many of my tricks in this game. We finished 1778. I have pulled nearly every great card I could hope for in order to run a textbook Southern strategy: campaign card on turn 1 (Delaware was mine!), Continental Line Mutiny in 1777, and lots and lots of 2 & 3 OPS cards along the way. He did use the Washington Winter Offensive to take back Delaware. So far, I have Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Canada, and Rhode Island.

While we test my Vassal module. I am the Americans. This game has truly surprised me, being much more than I thought it would be. It's a tense game of maneuvering and hand management. It's actually a tactical card driven game in a distant-cousin-like way. Each card has 3 purposes: move, battle, or event. It's tactical instead of strategic and doesn't have OPS points. It actually has 2 different values for combat or movement, but each card serves 3 purposes.

The game comes down to how you maneuver your units and how you manage your hand, and it's quite tense. The event cards really add a lot flavor, as I have used them to escape certain doom on more than one occasion (retreat before battle and the Morgan's Riflemen in particular).

and I have fired up another game switching sides. I'm really looking forward to this one. The game is very asymmetric and I generally enjoy taking the side that isn't as powerful in combat (ex: French in Wilderness War, Americans in Washington's War). I like the challenge of playing to the different strength and in this side, the Gallic player has a lot of advantages--but fighting ain't one of them!

and I are coming down the stretch in this one. I came out like gangbusters on turn 1. Turn 3, I was ready to push again and got plagued with some horrible, horrible dice. Seriously, I bet I rolled 8 times and couldn't even hit a 7 on any of them.

Last turn, I pulled a big blunder, forgetting time was NOT on my side. I had a super-sweet hand and wanted to see what he did, before I pounded, so I passed, and he quickly passed again, ending the turn and bringing him a lot of reinforcements. shake

We (Rick, his son Jeremy, and I) are three sessions into this campaign, which is currently preparing to enter the Fall of 1943. Two more sessions should do it, but as we only average one session per month, I expect this game to be on gaming table #1 in September and October. My Axis are currently holding off the Red horde in the East, while preparing Festung Europa in the West. The Italians are also rampaging through southern Europe while clinging to their North African empire. I like my odds.

This game is currently "on deck" awaiting its turn on gaming table #2, as Dan and I will move immediately from the conclusion of Yom Kippur to our next SCS foray! I have already chosen to be the Russians in SP, and am anxiously awaiting our first turn of this one. At this point, we haven't selected the scenario we will play, but I believe we will go for the full-blown historical campaign - no half measures for us!
