Forget about whether it's pasted on or dripping with it, I've always been big on theme no matter what. As the conversation rolls on through game play, I'll try to bring the theme in as much as I can, whether as a joke or to help remember a rule or whatever else, it always makes for a more enjoyable experience

So, which theme seems to pop up most in your collection and why?

Is it Ancient Egypt? The Renaissance? Zombies? 19th Century Trains? Alien Colonization? World War II? Mongolian Goat Wrestling?

Post below (to keep it simple, lets not include expansions) and just because it will be more interesting, post your second most prevalent theme as well

Please keep in mind this isn't about game mechanics. Also this type of categorization can obviously be extremely broad or very niche. I leave that up to you how to categorize your own games but the more niche, the more interesting and wider variety between collections, I think (you don't have to use the BGG defined categories but can)

The High Middle Ages

This is a lot harder than I at first thought as I have a wide variety of interests and thus, a varied game collection. However, I seem to have around a dozen games from the High Middle Ages (approx. 11th-13th centuries) or thereabouts. It's certainly a fascinating period and has a lot of pretty awesome games. I don't know that I'm particularly drawn to this time period over others, but it is cool. This game I absolutely adore but don't play nearly enough!

This particular game is on preorder (can't wait!) and I'm a huge advocate of GOOD Biblical/religious themed games. I counted about seven or eight in my collection with that in mind.

My themes are quite spread out I THINK.

It's quite possible that the Napoleonic era is my most heavily subscribed thanks to wonders such as Field Commander Napoleon, Command and Colours Napoleonics, Waterloo and Age of Napoleon.

Elves going through rites of passage to enter adulthood is trailing badly with just Elfenland.

My favorite theme is fantasy. High, low, or somewhere in between, the majority of my collection is fantasy. My original purpose for acquiring games was actually to hunt down late 70's early 80's fantasy board games. It was like uncovering some old tomes or scrolls of knowledge that I could read through and see how fantasy was interpreted at that time and how mechanics played out in games containing wizards and dragons. Even if some of the games really aren't fun to play, I am proud of my vintage fantasy board game collection. My shelves contain some games that many probably haven't even heard of including Witchlord and Fantastic Encounters. Now that I am all but taken over by the 'cult of the new', today's fantasy games are (mostly) fantastic. I can never have too many dungeon crawlers, no matter how generic some are interpreted to be. I am always looking for the next fantasy game, whether it is more of a Euro like Dungeon Petz or a wargame like the beautiful Dragon Rage reprint. I will always hold out hope for a new edition of Magic Realm. :]

The vast majority of my games are wargames. Based on the Geeklist that I linked, it would be World War II with 66 games: so many that I broke it out into 3 theaters.

Next is the (American) Civil War with 24 games.

Well, the theme might be post-apocalyptic games.
The New Era is very much appreciated, so is Neuroshima Hex! and its expansion Neuroshima Hex! Babel13.
And I think we can add Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game (expanded by Last Night on Earth: Survival of the Fittest), although it has zombie theme, but I doubt that zombies will start migrating the streets without some kind of apocalypse.
Can Arkham Horror be put under this theme? Maybe a little bit as well.
And I am vey much looking forward to adding Arctic Scavengers to mu collection.

Most of my games are loosely based on European history, but not ones with war themes.
Lots of Italian cities plus French, Dutch, English and a smattering of others. Many princes and princesses and kings.

It isn't surprising that, since I love maps, I'm a sucker for any gameboard with a map on it. Fictional or otherwise.

I don't keep games unless they are fun. I admire games that are thinky or innovative, but unless my family has a good time playing it...I'm not going to keep it for long.

I think Power Grid is a very, very well made game. However, no one in my family particularly likes it. So it will likely be shipped out soon.

Apart from wargames that could be fractionated in many ways is Horror. I've always been interested in how horror stories/movies can be adapted to board games. It's a medium that does not interpret well. Hard to get all that emotion into a bunch of paper and tokens. Which game do I think captures the feeling of horror the best? Space Hulk. There's something about the gothic like confinements of the ship and the unknown of the blips running around you that can make your skin prickle.

I've held Halloween game parties in the past where only the horror games are available for play. Quite fun.

Others I enjoy:

Mystery at House on the Hill
Horrorclix
Dreamblade
Eldar Sign
Zombiecide
Etc. Etc.

Interesting to sit down and categorise your list - some games can fall easily into more than one category.

I wasn't too surprised to see Fantasy sits comfortably at the top of my list (though I'm sure some people would say some of my choices are not "fantasy" - the OP seems to give us some leeway ).

In second I was more surprised to see what looks like a sci-fi/horror/war split.

Pretty broad, on the whole - which does surprise me. As an old-school RPG-er I'd've thought I would've been more narrow-minded! laugh

Nothing really, there's a fair bit of variety.

If we're trying to be picky, I guess it's a bit like:
Fantasy
>
Space
>
Zombies
>
Cthulhu

And that doesn't represent what gets actually played by a long shot. (If we go by most played, superheroes pretty much wins from just Legendary =P)

Tropical-themed games. I am a sucker for anything that features the beach and palm trees.

Games in this group include Maori, Fiji, Hotel Samoa, Maka Bana, Aloha, Aloha: The Spirit of Hawaii, Tahiti, Tobago, Das Letzte Paradies, Tonga Bonga, Tonga Island, Kula Kula, Kahuna, Vanuatu, Big Kini, and Summertime. Easter Island gets thrown in here too even though it's not quite the same: Rapa Nui, Moai, Giants, and Die Oster Insel.

My second-most prevalent theme is trains: Railways of the World and all its expansions, Paris Connection, Chicago Express, American Rails, Ticket to Ride and that whole family, Vom Kap bis Kairo, and Express.
