Today I received a wonderful gift from a friend: Donkey Kong the board game. I love all things Donkey Kong and am a sucker for games based on old video games. Thinking back through the games I have owned in my life, I have owned a few that fit this category.

If anyone else owns or used to own board (or card) games based on video games, please feel free to add them.

The reason for this geeklist! I'm a big fan of our fair maiden snatching friend. For a while, I refused to play Mario Party games after 4 because Donkey Kong was no longer a playable character.

I have yet to play the game, but what seems interesting is the ridiculous Kong statue that drops barrels. The barrels themselves are awesome bits. For a game from 1982, those are pretty cool bits. The Marios and fireballs are sturdy little plastic figures as well.

I own a small deck of sticker trading cards of the original arcade game, too.

I owned this when I still lived in Queens, NYC before my parents divorced. My brother and I may have never played the game properly, but thinking back on it, I wish I had those awesome cards again today. Unfortunately, I cannot recall anything of value about the game.

I recently added this game to a geeklist about cardboard standees. When I searched the geek for this game, I was reminded of the amazing 3D buildings and huge standees of the characters. I don't recall how well the game played, but the components were awesome. And in 1994, who didn't love Street Fighter?

Never owned it but used to try to figure out how it would turn into a board game.

I haven't owned Hexxagon, but I've played it at an online abstract strategy game site. It's a good abstract strategy game which was apparently originally a video game, a hex grid version of the earlier video abstract strategy game Ataxx.

Owned this as a kid. Thought the 'pac men' that came with the game were cool.

I am a big fan of the first three Zelda games and I had this game as a child (it may very well still be somewhere in my parents' house). I don't remember the details of gameplay, but I seem to remember something about flipping tiles over to find the proper item to advance to the next room. Most of the tiles were monsters that had to be defeated in some fashion and they got progressively more difficult to defeat as each player progressed.
