Played by: Nick, Andrew007, Graham and Gordon

In a break with tradition we decided to play Trains using the correct rules this evening - in fairness the changes did not really alter the flavour or feeling of the game but I think they did speed things up somewhat.

I played the entire game thinking I was trailing by miles - for several deck cycles I never had money in my hand at the same time I had a track-laying cards so I was significantly out-built in terms of network by everyone. I also carelessly let Andrew build past me then had to pay a fortune to build into those hexes. However at game end when we added up the scores I had won.

Buying 3 'Tourist Trains' helped and I managed to acquire 2 'Control Rooms' which allowed me to cycle my deck faster than the others. Although Andrew was present in a lot more cities than me, I was in four size 2 cities, one size 3 and three size 1's scoring 30 pts, whereas most of his cities were size 1.

I don't have the score sheet but will add them here of whoever does posts.

Rating [8] for me.

We somehow managed to fill the evening with 3 games of RftG. Chris very kindly introducing myself & Maynard to the delights of RftG icons.

We played the base game for the first two games, adding in the Rebel vs Imperium expansion for our last game.

The first game had a lot of production/consume cycles and ended with 36vp exceeded, where as the other two were scored mainly via cards and ended with 12+ tableaus.

Scores:
Chris 40(1) 21(3) 47(1)
Maynard* 27(3) 37(1) 39(2)
Jonathan* 37(2) 36(2) 34(3)

Based on the scores Maynard seem to improve as the evening went on and I seemed to get worse. cry

A rather abrupt ending meant I didn't manage to collect ratings.
I'll give it a solid 7.5 as its a game I would be happy to play again, but needs more experience before I can fully appreciate its strengths and weaknesses.

One negative: The Summary Sheets were disappointing. Given that the main complaint about the game is learning the icons I was surprised that the sheets weren't more complete in this regards, rather than using space on things like card layout, which is easy to pickup. I came across I number of icons that weren't covered by the sheet. Irritating niggle.

After trains Andrew waved goodbye, Gordon joined another table so Russell Graham and Nick sat down for a game of speed Puerto Rico. Its very rare that I ever play a game that everyone has played before so the rule explanation is skipped. This was one of those rare events.

Russell showed his calibre pre-game by 'knowing' that the 3 player game uses 75 colonists. I needed nudging on a few set up rules but Russell was in there like a surgeons knife BANG! with the answer. He was going to need watching.

The game gave Graham and Russell the indigo and me the corn to start to which Russell sagely commented that I was pursuing the shipping strategy. He can read people's minds I tell you. The game then left the blocks at pace with Graham starting with a Settler start and a quarry, Russell the sugar and and me some more corn (how did Russell know?).

Moves were taking little more than 10 seconds per player and pretty soon Russell and Graham had impressive collections of buildings and I had corn coming out of my ears (or should that be ears coming out of my corn?), however the game ended with the VPs running out with playing time being approx. 40 minutes. After a count up, Russell had won by one point. Cheers and handshakes all around. After a brief break down, I noticed I'd miscounted and it was a draw but made the cut on the tie breaker. Further cheers and corrected handshakes. Hang on that stack of 1 vps had 5 vp chits in it, Russell runs out of space to record the score owing to the mass of corrective crossing out. No more handshakes.

Without doubt the fastest game of PR ever experienced by me with all players admirably using the force rather than detailed analysis. Graham to fill in the scores.

A filler of a card game to end the evening for Russell Graham and Nick. Russell explained the rules and we were off. A clever game with manageable opportunities to balance out a poor card draw, but I was left feeling that unless you were very good at card counting the cards dictated your obvious moves and could be kind or rough with you. And that pretty much sums up most card games.

Nick
Graham: ( I think but I don't have the score sheet)
