I am not a cubeophile. I derive no pleasure from pushing cubes around a board. Quite the contrary, I can no longer stand those little, monochrome, lackluster, trite, insipid, vacuous, banal, vapid, wooden cubes.

I want to like Eurogames. I admit that I have an inclination towards Ameritrash, because I value theme on an equal level with the game mechanics themselves. And I don't see why we can't have both. But these wooden cubes are the herpes of board-game components. Take Lords of Waterdeep for example, in addition to liking the mechanics, I'm fond of the majority of its component quality, the graphic presentation, and the theme. But when you juxtapose those damnable cubes against such fine components, it makes their hideousness all that much more glaringly apparent.

So Eurogamers, please, tell me, what really good Eurogames are there that are cube-free? I'll give just a few examples below so as to give you a feel of what else I'm looking for.

This one started out with promise; liked the mechanics, loved that it was void of cubes, appealing to the eyes, but my hopes were dashed when I realized that, apart from the classic priority dilemma inherent to the worker-placement mechanic, this game is otherwise a multiplayer-solitaire experience.

So, keep that in mind before recommending and adding a game to the list: No multiplayer-solitaire games, please. I loathe them. I game largely for the social experience, both in table-talk and in-game interaction.

Okay, this one has been on my radar for some time now. There do appear to be some wooden cube offenders, but just a few. Would colored glass gaming beads work as substitutes, or would those be too large/impractical?

Huzzah! The first edition of the game, by Asmodée, had monochromatic, flat wooden discs which, while not as insufferable as cubes, still smack of euroy blandness. Fantasy Flight to the rescue! This is the kind of quality that I'm talking about, people.

Qualifier: I refuse to play just the original base game. It needs to have either the Cities & Knights expansion, or be a good variant of the game itself (e.g., Settlers of Canaan, etc.).

+ No cubes.

+ Player interaction. E.g., spiting with the robber, expanding in order to curb the progress of other players, and trading resources.

+ While the original leaves something to be desired in graphic presentation, there are several visually appealing variants out there.

Some expansions make this game even better, others make it worse, and too many expansions causes the game to drag on for far too long.

+ Not a cube in sight.

+ Some player interaction. E.g., placing tiles so as to disrupt your opponents' efforts, butting-in on or attempting to usurp control of cities and fields.

+ There are some very visually appealing variants out there. I'm particularly fond of Ark of the Covenant for both its graphic presentation, and changes and additions to the mechanics.

No cubes, and when you have a worker placement and tile laying game where your meeples can actually slug it out in gunfights, then you know the game has tons of interaction!

Now if I can only find a copy for purchase!

Multiple different auctions ensure the game is extremely interactive.

This game has more "agony of decision," meaning every decision point is critical, than just about any other game.

Nothing but cards in this Eurogame and, unless you're playing with a group trying to avoid interaction (in which case, you picked the wrong game), the whole point of the game is wheeling and dealing.

If you can get past the one-cube-per-player on the scoring track (or substitute them with anything else), this is a great game with wooden viking meeples and money as the main components.

Interaction comes primarily from the indirect auction mechanic. On each turn, each player 'buys' a tile and meeple off the common wheel - and you have to consider what your opponents want/need as well as what you want/need. (i.e. It may be better to take the tile your neighbour really needs than a different tile you'd just like.) No rules against table talk either.

An older game, but a good one. Nobody owns their own rail line. Instead, all players can expand any existing rail in the direction(s) that are best for them/worst for their opponents. Add a 'bonus-selecting' mechanic in which not everyone is going to get the bonus ability they want and I'd say there's a decent amount of interaction here. It has cards, money and wooden train tracks, but no cubes that I can recall.
