Despite the fact I have geek list/gaming report transcriptions in my bag o' notes that are MORE Than EIGHT months behind---(( Yes, this is where my dear gaming compadre Tim from San Antonio says " Damn you Kel, you take LONGER than ANYONE to post your GLs and crap!!!" -- ( Sorry I don't have the brainpower at the moment to do the fancy paste Tim's BGG user thingy in that sentence) ))-- I am going to make this place holder for our first JuanKelDavidLaborDayCon since Juan moved up here in these northern parts.

I will elaborate on scoring and comments when the time ever allows

Update-- Now with details as of 9/2 !
Update--- Early hours of 9/3 -this list is 2/3 done or so. I will finish it herewith. I am going to use remaining brainpower at present to make my first drafts of session reports and a review !

2 more playings of this quick and ingenious little game of murder and intrigue and destruction!!! So thrilled Juan has taught me this.

FIRST GAME -- Very bad card placing by me early-- Juan kills my whole inner court in just a few cards.

SECOND GAME:Yay Duke !! Yay 9s !! I hold off Juan's rally on my huge early lead--- J 24 K 28.

Thrilled to have gotten to play this -- makes me just as excited to get the same designer's Romans Go Home and Kola to the table.

A very clever and MUCH fast than I had anticipated little card game with a clever climbing tree of two increasing-in-value-but-decreasing-in-resources sets of rows of cards to purchase, plus a management/set collection element. Wonderful game, played not wonderful by me. My color rows kept getting wrecked by me not being able to sacrifice cards with food. I lose big time. Will be stoked to play again !! A-M 38 J 47 K 24 ( )

Nothing more exciting than finally getting to play a medium-to-heavy classic that has been on your radar for ages, and indeed finding out you love it -- and that you even didn't place last on the first playing!! (I know this happens to a lot of people, but boy howdy it REALLY happens to me a LOT ---my first learning game of a medium to heavy game I will love the experience but I will make mistakes no one in the history of the game has ever made, and make plan-paths that end up in colossal disaster.)

A former just BGG pal, David, is now a real life gaming compadre and taught us this. Brilliant, inventive use of .. well what is it.. "action selection in a given area control sort of move-around mechanic?" that activates the auctions--auctions to buy resources -- resources to trade in to activate climbing up a point/tech/achievement tree tableau-- all combining to make a thrillingly engaging design and my newest 10.

I got very lucky and drove my ship tree up FAST-- I had nutmeg issues that thankfully I got to fix by the middle of the game-- and voila -- instead of a dreadful performance -- I was one point from second. David who taught us ( Thanks !) was expected to do much better but got destroyed by the one luck element of the colonists card flip gamble sort of dealio --leaving us with a very tight finish.

I am a renown fanboy of Knizia " little" games. Having wanted to get this to the table for YEARS-- it's my first disappointment. No, not that I hated it, but I wasn't doing my usual fanboy RK little game happy dance afterwards. ( That is a metaphor folks. I don't really have a RK little game happy dance. I do enough weird things as it is, thanks.)

My issue is.. ARE the triplets TOO powerful? Did we just NOT pay attention to David mongo grabbing almost all of them PLUS having a 200 run? I thought hardly anyone was going to get a 200 run, I had one early--my hubris-soaked self thought well, I am going to win or tie and no one else can possibly be doing better than me or if so not by much.

We all know what happens when you cloak yourself in hubris. I am just BARELY 2nd as David eats us alive.

Still a solid game.. I MUST play it a couple more times to see how I feel about the scoring.

My first playing of F2F was a big thrill and discovery. I had been playing online on that famous french website ( sorry , It starts with Boit and I am not even going to TRY to get my spellcheck to do it right and I am too busy/lazy right now to cut/paste name of said site)-- and I THOUGHT I got it sort of.

I didn't.

But now I do and I loved it !!

But no one was the traitor in my first playing so the plan was much clearer. We had an extra player as David was learning, and I rather stupidly didn't BELIEVE Juan was pretty much going for traitor and Rome win from get-go. I kept thinking he was just trying to cover all bases and he wasn't " REALLY' going there, but he was , expertly so. Therefore the extra player, David finding the play buy bury mechanic a tad unintuitive at first,Juan going for traitor , this playing was a WAY different experience than my previous one. I still adore this game and can't wait to play again-- David is understandably less than enthusiastic.

J D AM K points irrelevant and not counted Rome wins, Juan goes for traitor/consp red cards and gets a pile of them, he wins.

A LONG time Yucata fave.. despite me having TWO copies.. never played f2f IRL -- AM needed a nap so this was J and I's 2 player gaming fun-- LOVE LOVE this mechanic. You win but get the least points in each color -- it looks so wonky and paradoxical in that simple sentence but the execution of this is IMO M. Schacht's only game almost as minimalistically brilliant as Coloretto.

Except---

What happens with ties? More of this rejoice in your shared victory crap?

TIE ! J K both with 12

I so appreciated David bringing this, his pal Pat having only time for one game and hopefully enjoying it being this, Juan and Ana-Maria NOT liking this game much but playing it mostly to placate me - and of course David teaching it !!

I totally see why this gets so much hate here-- but I adored it. Some groan worthy puns, a mostly open info auction where if you don't get the goodies to put in your movie you get a share of the winning monies.. there's SOME secret reveal goodies at two points in the auction road/rack marked PARTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DUDE, PARTY ON BITCHES !!! ( OK, I am stating hyperbole for presumably entertaining reasons, it just says -- PARTY.)-- I am a sucker for ANYTHING that smacks of a game show mechanic no matter how subtle--- a bunch of RK weird bonuses for certain things at frequent intervals-- a later trademark wonky RK scoring award for WORST set ( movie) ---my weirdo self says what's not to LOVE?

Everyone else of course says, it's silly, it's too light, the auctions are dumb.. etc. But I had a blast. My mint Hollywood Blockbuster I have barely touched since it went into my massive collection is getting dragged out soon to try to convert more people !!!

Needless to say though-- stop me if you have heard this before--- Kel kicks ass at the beginning. Starts putting on that cologne called hubris. Says, wow I might win !! WOO !!

Then everyone overtakes me like a late 18 wheeler passing your Grandma in the slow lane -- I DID make a late rally of finishing two big star movies to tie for second, but this factory didn't make a Kel dream of a huge win come true.

CAN't WAIT to play again. Now to see who with.. ?

No guts no glory. Gonna make a mistake and lose anyway, flame out like a massive nova Dude that God could use to wipe out Jupiter in a nanosecond.

We are all doing pretty evenly.. about 1/2 way through the game.. I get this card plan that If I can get just TWO measly more Artisans .. in two turns I can get a monstrous amount of points and not only take the lead-- I could put the game away.

So I take the HUGE risk to go to 22 cards. BRING ON ALL THAT CORRUPTION BRO !! I am about to build the whole damn temple.

22 cards.

Not a single Artisan. I die in said flames with more corruption than 100 Louisiana politicians. It wouldn't even fit all the way under my pyramid.

41 corruption. IS that a record? Does anyone keep records of this?

More bad news-- we adored David for teaching us Goa and Louis IV, I adored him for bringing and teaching Dream Factory--- in this game he became a big, terrible meaniehead for his comments on his first playing of this. Our gaming pal love's bloom's gone, dude. ( -- All of this rant is meant very teasingly with good nature in case anyone thinks I am REALLY trying to whale on David. He's a wonderful gamer and teacher and I can't wait to play with him again when time permits.) --

FIRST, I adore this game even when I play it worse than anyone has played it in the history of the game. SECOND, this game is WHY close to three years go I started making a facebook photo album called GAME STUFF ( now pushing 900 pics) because I had to take pics of this game first time I played it. Then I decided to take pics of ALL games I play unless fone battery is low or I forget. THIRD-- David had the gall to dis all the pretty bits-- even the ones that J and AM had PAINTED fancier than they came with their own bare hands ( and paint of course); for SHAME David !!!--saying that all the tons of bits did nothing thrilling for him.

FOURTH-- David proceeds to understandably say the cards mixed up every which way chaos of some up some down was causing his OCD to go into horror-induced overdrive WHILE he said to the effect of, I paraphrase, " I am not sure how all this fits together yet? Why are there 4 of that piece and 2 of those? Wait, how many cards can I have? Why is this player aid filled with 4 million words of text? This game is silly."

FIFTH I even tried to empathize with him. David is quite obviously a staggeringly brilliant gentleman. But you can have days or games where, to make an extreme metaphor, you can rock the house on a game that takes a calculus doctorate with a 718 page rule book-- yet the next hour need a player aid to play tic tac toe. ((( TANGENT-- This happened to me so recently--- I have helped teach some Wallace games , I have an alleged 180 IQ, I have SEVEN college degrees-- I had to get Juan to WALK ME through Mr. Jack Pocket because I couldn't make sense of the rules from a year of reading them repeatedly.))

So we all move along, mocking Kel ( me) for his hand of 2018 cards and his need for 5 pyramids to hold all his corruption.

After all of this.

SIXTH....

What does David have the GALL to do?

Wait for it.

Wait I said.

Wait a bit more.

HE ( bleepng bleeping bleeping ) WINS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

David is the Cleopatra SOA meaniehead of the century winning a game he isn't all that taken with to say the least. Kel adores this game and sets a world record of how badly it can be played.

There is price to pay.

I have now bribed our wonderful hosts that when David is ever now playing with us when there is the hosts' wonderful food offered,David don't get none. Kel eats his part. No, David for your hatin' on Cleopatra , the hosts' painting, and then WINNING-- I get your pasta. I get your salad. I get your bread, I get your Sprite. Your happy ass gets a McDonald's coupon and a boot out the door until food is over.

Again, all in good fun. David is going to be a valuable gaming compadre, I have a good feeling he is going to teach me/us even more wonderful deeper games so I can get more classics under my belt.

So here is the score AM 25 D 63 ( !!!) J 51 Kel-- out of game with the aforementioned 41 corruption. Needles to say I sort of gave up 3/4 of the way through, I would have still only had 31 measly points.

(( Again all in good fun-- David also has published here on the geek some phenomenal game reviews.))

But....

I am still getting his food next time.

Proof that I love to play for playing's sake? Not like the kiddo I used to be who only wanted to win.

If someone held a gun to my head and said FIVE SECONDS TO SPIT OUT YOUR FAVE GAME-- GO !! I used to think I'd say my beloved El Grande, my lifelong adoration of game show games might make me spit out Password, Jeopardy or 25k pyramid, my obsession with little clever card games might make my forced quick DON"T THINK ABOUT IT response be Turn the Tide, Coloretto, or King's Breakfast-----

but no more.

After one more playing from this Labor day game fest. THIS. THIS Feld Anomaly is my favorite game now hands down in ANY genre.

But.. why does this prove I like playing for playing's sake???

Before playings of this last fall and spring-- I was so giggly excited knowing this game was on the agenda I'd plan out strategy in the shower beforehand. In the drive to the venue. DETAILED strategies as in what I would do on perhaps the first 10 turns depending on what cards I would get.

I still would always...

SUCK MASSIVE FECES AT THIS GAME.

I would say NO ONE WILL GUESS ME.

Everyone would.

I would say OH DUDE , I am going to get everything and remember what people did in prev. games. I would be the only person with PAGES of notes.

I would guess one other person right at the end if I was LUCKY.

THERE's your proof. Despite that, this is now indeed as of Fall 2013, until further notice, my fave game.

So of course I am ecstatic it gets to the table for this wonderful day of a dozen games. I give up on any dreams of a decent performance. I just enjoy he game, take minimal notes, and have a VERY VERY simple strategy this time.

AND MIRACLE of the MIRACLES......

I almost WON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Notable in this game :

Our hostess, for JuanKelCon events-- Ana Maria, is a very wonderful, sweet, kind, beautiful...

SNAKE in the proverbial grass.

BECAUSE she seems so innocuous and dear, she can sell 40 warehouses of ice to Eskimos and she can tell you a white wall is black until you would swear an affidavit to it. She brings this amazing talent to games like this and wipes the floor with you. How? She is the ONLY person I have ever seen have her color not guessed BY ONE SINGLE PERSON in 9 attempts. ( 3 4 player games. )

So needless to say she rocked again as usual, and no, NO ONE guessed her color. But wonder of wonders my simple strategy worked... only ONE person guessed mine. And I am not giving it away. ( This was probably lightning in a bottle .. it won't work next time anyway. LOL)

The other note --- J and AM's brilliant grade school age son Seb played this with us. He did a spectacular job for a first playing but he did the ACTING part a little too much , so starting the third day and me and his Dad decided to make a secret guess and we were right and we destroyed what was his MASSIVE early lead.

Wonderful little Seb was black... eventually he starts saying just a FEW too many times " WOW, Black is really lucky... Black hasn't moved at all, Black might win". Now this child is so brilliant I easily could have surmised that he WANTED us to think he was trying too hard. But so we started whaling on black, who had a HUGE lead in the first three days to get black out of the running --- and he finished a more than respectable third ---as his Dad , by bad luck of the UBER destructive card that doubles your suspicion/clue points EVERY turn you gather, (thus causing grey to get MONSTROUS points one round,) ..and yes Juan was grey.

AM beat me 90% with her always brilliant deception and 10% my one set of bad luck. NO ONE guessed her color as stated and she had no push the day end penalty cards. One person guessed me and I had FOUR such cards because I didn't have enough chits to deflect them when I ended up with entire hands of 4s at the 23rd hour FOUR times when it was my turn.

A spectacular playing of a spectacular game.

AM win
Kel 2nd by only 2 points
Seb 3rd
Juan LAST--MURDERER!!!!

Evidently this game so out of favor because of a wonky rule book, which also renders even a fine teaching like the one David gave us somewhat head-scratching at first. ( But YMMV , another awesome new gaming pal Tony has in his comments on this game how easy it is to explain. :: shrug::: I for one was intrigued but a tad but lost as we started the first round.

BUT this game is brilliant-- as this initial confusion lead to in the middle of the first turn " OH!! CLICK !! I GET IT !!" -- I think that's often a sign of a medium/medium heavy game's spectacular design. It may seem way non-intuitive at first-- but with a good teacher once you get going it all falls into place.

I was phenomenally lucky to place second in this game because-- I mistakenly as part of said confusion thought the supply you get to start , you would get EVERY TIME, so I am burning cubes like mad to get stuff on the action selection card tableaux. Then I ended up still not being able to complete a mission the first time and I was WAY low on cubes !!!

But I miraculously got lots of crowns , the missions started to fall, and it all came together and I only lost by 4 points to David the expert!! I will be glad to play this again, BUT, it doesn't go on my list to add to my massive collection yet because it's going to be a good 5 more playings before I think I can REMOTELY teach it. A terribly under-hyped and UNDESERVEDLY cult-under radar little masterpiece of a design !! (The amount of HOTNESS games that can't hold a candle to this little gem is honestly shameful!)

Our final game of the night was this beloved dice fest. Ironically while not as intense as my love for Name of The Rose-- I just realized this is another game I love, that i always feel I am doing decent, and then I am always last. Sometimes not by much, like this game .. . but still always last. :/

Why does my game life HAVE so many of these? I must be part masochist.
