Companion list to Living list: Unplayed games.

Inspired by Shane Larsen’s list.

These games are going to be on here a while—with three kids aged 1, 2, and 3, I don’t have much time for reading wargame manuals, and tabletops aren’t very safe.

But when the kids get older, watch out!

As I get games played, I’ll move the game entry, and any comments to the entry, whether mine or others’s, over to Living list: Played wargames.

Prominent on the short list for Jane. It’s (a) simple, (b) beautiful, and (c) interesting to me. She liked Maria, and I have no doubt this will go down easily, too. It would be her first block game, but she has spoken fondly of sessions of the accursed Stratego as a child, and she’s played much more complex games than this. The visual presentation by itself will half sell her on the idea while we’re setting up. She likes substance, but she’s also a sucker for beauty.

I long to get this played. My regular nonwife gaming partner will be up for it if I learn the rules first, and I have no problem soloing this through to an acceptable degree of proficiency. But I have mine stored in a bag, so I’m constantly forgetting it on the shelf and never getting around to learning it. Tonight is Snowdonia solo night. But maybe tomorrow. I’ve read enough about this game to be in love with it long before getting it played. And I don’t think my high hopes will be disappointed. Jesse is very accepting of narrative randomness, and I think the amount of uncertainty in Up Front will suit us perfectly.

A birthday present from Jane a couple years ago now. I’ve read the rules, and we got halfway through the rules together, but we had to leave off for the next day and it never ended up happening. That’s not to say she isn’t interested in playing. Jane has a weakness for the Napoleonic era and would be perfectly happy to play the Austrians to my French. As with Seki and 1812, the visual presentation alone has her interested.

A strong contender for the most likely of my unplayed wargames to be played soonest. The one-against-many aspect is fascinating, and the rules overhead is low, especially for a wargame. And I have an opponent who will be up for this.

This is on a short list to play with my wife. She loves the map, loves the topic, and is up for anything after her first wargaming experience: an 8-hour game of Wilderness War. Based on my experience with Rommel in the Desert, I think this will be a hit with her.

No, not that War Galley, though it will be on this list, too.

Right now this is sitting inside my Vampire Empire tin being fireproof. Whenever I get the time, the little matchboxes will turn into little ’remes. But it’s anyone’s guess when that will be. All my art projects take the longest, because I don’t want to do it unless I do it right; at present I’m considering buying different matchboxes for each side, but I guess it’s hard to get matches shipped through the mail? If I felt up to it I would use these and then go from there, but I’m not sure I do.
