There's this somewhat popular thread, known as the Geek of the Week.

In in, the GotW has a tradition of telling "Two Truths and a Lie". Then, at some point in their thread, they reveal what the lie was.

A lot of the time, I miss seeing the reveal. I decided to do something about that by collecting them here.

I'm adding items as time allows, there's been a lot of Geek of the Weeks. I'm only doing the BGG geeks. Subscribe if you like seeing them, but the main point of this is for my own education, so don't yell at me if I'm going slowly!

Besides, some of those old GotW thread are interesting, a.k.a., distracting! Go visit and thumb them!

Here are her two truths and a lie, followed by her explanations at the end of the week.

I met my husband at a roleplaying convention.
I speak three languages fluently, which is helpful when I need to translate rules for games.
My parents ran a games shop when I was growing up.

meeple
So with less than 24 hours to go of my tenure, I guess it's time to confess the truth.

I met my husband at a roleplaying convention.
In September 1983, I went to Arcanacon, a new roleplaying convention run by MUDDA, the Melbourne Uni Dungeons & Dragons Association. I played AD&D with a team of young boys who I knew through [see below] and it was a disaster. They couldn't agree on anything and we finished the first 3-hour session in the same place we started it. It's amazing I ever went back.
The author of that tournament - or co-author, in fact - was one Fraser McHarg, one of the organisers of the convention. I was 13, he was OLD, but we both remember meeting each other then. Over the years, we became friends, and we started dating at Arcanacon X in July 1992, only 3 months before I moved to Austria for a year's study.
So this one is TRUE: I did meet my husband at a roleplaying convention. Although if you had told either of us in 1983 that we would marry, I think our heads would have exploded.

My parents ran a games shop when I was growing up.
My dad was a lecturer in Operations Research at Monash Uni, and also ran his own consultancy business. He and mum share a love for books and for games, so when I was eight they decided to open a shop specialising in GOOD books and games. It was never a huge success, although it (mostly) paid the bills, and they closed it in 1990 or so. They ran holiday D&D sessions in the back room for years, but in retrospect I can see that they never really had an identity - they tried to be all things to all people, rather than focusing on what they did well (recommending great books and games for kids). It was great for me and my brother - we got to try out all the cool stuff, go to wholesalers, and read all the latest books. It also sucked - we never got summer holidays because we always had to be at the shop (they never employed anyone to work there, it was always just the family). When I was eight, I was left to run the shop with my 5yo brother for the afternoon of Christmas Eve, so they could go get us presents. I remember gift wrapping a 3-volume set of Shakespeare's plays that was almost too heavy for me to lift.

When I was 15, they moved the shop to a new location and for 2 weeks I managed the new shop while they packed up the old one.

It's ironic that their major (children's bookshop) competition is still there - they do marketing very well, but when I went in recently to see if the Wombles chapter books were still in print, the manager of the shop looked at me blankly and said "oh are there books about them?" - after a couple more questions showed that she doesn't really know children's books (classics or more recent ones) very well, I choose not to shop there.
So this one is TRUE as well.

I speak three languages fluently, which is helpful when I need to translate rules for games.
Congratulations to all who picked this one as my lie.

I speak fluent English (duh) and German (albeit with an Austrian accent).

I love to learn languages and it's on the list for things I'd like to do when I have more time. In high school, I learned French for a year, Latin for three, and Russian for five. I've also done a nightschool course in Hungarian. I retain sufficient familiarity with French and Russian that I can do basic tourist things (at least, I assume I could in Russian - haven't tried!) like buying train tickets, ordering from a menu, etc. My Hungarian sucks but I can use a phrase book competently and my accent is pretty good (I've been told I speak Russian with a slight German accent and Hungarian with a slight Russian accent). With the Latin, I can get occasional clues to Italian (which I am picking up a little of as Biggie is now learning it at school and also because the part of Melbourne we live in has a large Italian community - I think I would probably be competent with a phrase book). I can usually get the gist of Dutch from the German and English knowledge.

I've not really spoken German since I came back from Austria in 1993; I occasionally read German books or watch something on TV. I would like to use it more and a friend and I were thinking about starting a German book club, although I think I'd rather have German language games nights I'm confident, though, that I would get it all back within a couple of days of arriving in a german-speaking country.

Biggie asked for a CD to learn German and she will listen to it at night as she's going to sleep. I had intended to raise my children bilingually, speaking German with them at home, but when I had Biggie there was so much else to do that I didn't. When I had Otto, I felt comfortable attempting it, but she burst into sobs every time she heard me speaking German. She seems to be over it now, but it took a while.

So this was a lie. I don't speak 3 languages fluently, although I wish I did.

Fourth GotW was Sonja.

Alas, her posts are gone, but from quote and inference, I could detect that:

1) Something about the French word for potato.
2) She seems to say she speaks Esperanto
3) Something about cats (as someone points out she later says she's allergic)

I'll assume 3 was the lie, but it's unclear.

The Fifth GotW

Two Truths and a Lie:

1. I know the stunt double who did most of the fencing in Pirates of the Caribbean and Zorro.

2. Geoffrey Rush flirted with me once, but I didn't realize who he was.

3. I spent a few hours stranded by myself along the N. Korea/S. Korea border. I was 14.

I have to track down her answer yet… and she responded!

Hi Chanfan:

Sorry, I'm hardly on bgg anymore. I forget which was the lie, but the thing about N/S Korea was true, and if I mentioned Geoffrey Rush, that was also true. Hope this helps.

Two Truths and a Lie:

Hmmm okay lemme think here....

1. I've never rode on the back of a horse, but I have rode on the back of an elephant

2. My tonsils are as big as my testicles.

3. I took a room service order from Johnny Carson back when I worked at the Heathman Hotel in downtown Portland back in 1995.

On a side note, a few responses regarding question #2:

#2 Who keeps tonsils anymore? But if that's true and I were your doctor, one or the other would have to go. Your choice.

#3. 70% of the geeks here are too young to remember who Johnny Carson is.

Yeah, #3 is the lie.

Ya got me Scrib. I did take a room service order from Doc Severenson though.

As far as #2 I've told people that before, but nobody has wanted to look in my mouth and see my tonsils. It's puzzling.

Chanfan comments: And ouch about Johnny Carson, I recall him - and Scrib said that back in 2005!

8th GotW

Two Truths and a Lie:

1. I have only ever had one girlfriend who later became my wife.
2. I can speak at least 2 Chinese dialect fluently.
3. I have undergone surgery to improve my looks.

meeple

And now, for the results.

1. This is true and straight forward. I am shy and conservative. But once I started dating, my charm proved too irresistable.

2. This is false. I can understand Hockkein and Cantonese rather well, but speaking wise, I would stutter most of the time. It is like writing Chinese now for me. I can read with ease, but if I have to think up the words, the retrieval process in my brain is too slow. This is the Archilles heal in my ministry. Thankfully most of the elderly in my church understands Mandarin.

3. I used to have an overextended lower jaw. It is not serious, but a good friend who is a dentist recommended me to go for the operation because it will be an easy one for my case. Function wise, it will improve my bite and my speech, but the real plus is that I do look somewhat better. Those that thought you can't improve on perfection were truly amazed.

Two Truths and a Lie:

Now, I'm still working on the two truths and a lie thing. The problem is that I'm such a mundane person, it would end up being something like:

I have six pairs of pants.
My father's middle name is Howard.
I've never been to Philadelphia.

No, wait, that was just an example of how lame my "two truths and a lie" would be. They're all lies. But you are right: I am married and I have no idea how many pairs of pants I own.

Typical Gola, won't fit into the standard mould. Ah well, go read his session report with the most thumbs evah.

Two Truths and a Lie:

I think I might have a decent one for this...we'll see:

1997 was a rough year for me...2 of these things happened, and 1 didn't...try to guess which

a) While driving back to work in a rain storm, I hit a teenaged girl with my car. Despite caving in my windhshield and being thrown 5 metres forward into the street when I jammed on my brakes, she suffered only minor injuries.

b) While driving to the city in my nice 86 Nissan 300 ZX, smoke started pouring into the car. I immediately stopped the car, and was horrified to see the engine on fire when I opened the hood. The fire department could do nothing as my car was engulfed in flames. I had bought the car 9 days earlier.

c) While making a spontaneous trip to Ontario with my friend Scott, we got the bright idea of horking one of the ubiquitous black and orange road construction barrels for a memento. Unfortunately, the border patrol decided to search the vehicle on the way back through and we were VERY sternly reprimanded after a painstaking 2 hour delay (in the middle of the night) for attempting to pilfer it.

meeple

The only real secret thing I need to reveal yet is the 2 truths and one lie, the lie was C, that I was caught coming back across the border with a road construction barrel...in reality we did pilfer one of them, but we took it out of the trunk prior to coming back across which was good...since we were searched laugh

Good heavens! I forgot to reveal my 2 truths and 1 lie.

I DID tear my ACL at the USU vs UNLV overtime basketball game, as I mentioned. It happened right at mid-court as we stormed the court...after winning the game.

THE LIE: I was NOT Lester Klew. I think he revealed himself, but I never did figure out who it was. Anyone know for sure? Anyway...it wasn't me.

I've snorkled in the Med.
I've looked for the Loch Ness Monster.
I've surfed in the Bristol Channel.

meeple

Hmm, no sign of actually revealing the lie. So I geekmailed her…

That feels like another lifetime ago. I hadn't thought of being GW in years. If you hadn't linked to the Geeklist which had the 2 truths and a lie, I wouldn't have known what I'd said!!

I lived in Greece for a year and a half and did indeed snorkel in the Med.

I honeymooned in England, traveling by car from London to Scotland and back to London. One of the many tourist spots we visited was Erquhart Castle to look for the Loch Ness monster.

The lie is that I surfed in the Bristol Channel.

15th GotW

Two Truths and a Lie:

Two truths and a lie; hmmm.

1. I spent time in a hippy commune looking after woolly monkeys and experiencing a bit of Free Love along the way.
2. I have a tattoo of a Klingon Battle Cruiser on my left arm, from a LONG time ago.
3. I used to play Monopoly obsessively, solo.

meeple

The Lie:
Number 2. I have no tattoos, although I rather like the look of them; too much of a coward.

And an excellent response:

melissa wrote:
So, like me, you have a tattoo of a Romulan Warbird.

Cloaked, of course.

Was the 16th GotW

Two Truths and a Lie:

I'm terrible at this game. Every time I read the GotW answers to this I am stumped. Louise in particular left me hopelessly confused and I believed everything she said. Anyway...

1. My first wife was a Las Vegas showgirl who, when we moved to Los Angeles, became one of the first all-nude dancers in the USA. She plied me with baubles to keep me happy and our marraige ended when I refused to become an actor in a toothpaste commercial.

2. I once became so infuriated at another gamer, because he was stupidly mis-interpreting the rules to Blood Bowl, that I took the rulebook and slapped him repeatedly in the face with it. He stormed out but then later apologized for being so dense.

3. One of the earliest games I recall playing as a lad in dusty old West Texas was called mumbly-peg, a game played barefooted with pocket knives. You throw the knife between an opponent's spread-out feet and he must touch it with one foot and then throw it between your feet. So your feet keep getting closer and closer together. First guy to chicken out loses the game. I was not a chicken, so I am missing part of one toe on my left foot from a game that went bad on me.

meeple

Alas, I could find no answers… but Tripp, being an active user, answered my geekmail before I finished editing the next entry!

Wow. Talk about a blast from the past, you and the GOTW questions. I had to go look to refresh my memory of what lies I told. Question #3 was the lie. Not about mumbly-peg, but about me missing body parts due to a bad throw.

I did swat my buddy Gary in the choppers with the Blood Bowl rules. I was married for just about 19 months to a Vegas showgirl in 1970-71. When we moved back to LA she went to work at The El Rancho Club, one of the first all-nude niteclubs. The El Rancho was also a site for the occasional 70's era movies as it had a fantastic decor. She insisted I go on an audition and I did and when I got a call-back for the commercial I refused. No real interest on my part. That unraveled our somewhat spurious relationship.

By the way, the old Blood Bowl rules were just stapled paper, it's not like I whacked Gary with a hardback book or anything.

Was the 17th Geek of the Week.

Two Truths and a Lie:

By the by---happy New Year, guys! I have just thought of my two truths and one lie, before I have to go set up World of Warcraft (my goodness).

1. I used to be an English major.
2. I was taught that computers were possessed by the devil.
3. I am technically Christian.

meeple

As for the three truths and one lie:

1. I really did use to be an English major. Comparitive literature, actually. It was a strange mishap that landed me into an art and technology course, which I did well in on the light technical side (HTML. I built up a somewhat complicated site, although this was back in the days of HTML 3.2, so it isn't impressive by today's standards). One of the guys in the class was a graduating CS major, and he recommended I take the introduction to computer science course, since I was quite interested in the perl CGIs he was writing.

I took the course, did extremely well in it (top of the class, laudes from my professor, hatred of some of the fellow students of mine who'd programmed in C for years or whatever it was they did, and didn't do anywhere near as well). I also taught the current concepts of the course OK for other people in the class on an informal basis, or at least the professor and teaching assistants told me that I did. (I did all that for free, because it helped me to learn, and because I like to help others. This did make some people hate me more, and not because I was competing with them for tutoring money; it was mostly because I was doing so well yet couldn't hold up my end of a hardware discussion). And I changed majors.

One of the turning points in my life.

2.
I really was taught that computers were possessed by the devil. Living with luddites, even non-Christian luddites, can do that to you. It's probably why #1 was so successful; I approached things from a different and fresh mindset. And probably had some inner organizational skills or something due to lack of exposure to technology or whatever. I can't really explain it. "Innate ability" sounds too unmodest.

3. I am not a Christian, not even technically. I do respect the ones who are not insane (e.g., fundamentalist) and who really do believe in the peace and brotherly love thing, and that the ten commandments should be taken as guidelines, not literally in today's world. I got one of them to believe that evolution really did occurr, or at least not to entirely brush it off, because it proved that God was of a technical mind and, once starting the process and knowing how it would go, could concentrate on other things. This went down very well. It's all in presentation. Of course, it helped that he actually did have an open mind.

If anyone asked, I would have to say that I'm a Taoist, which probably doesn't surprise many people. Taoism is more a philosphy than anything else, I think of it as something you could mix into compatible religions. Otherwise I don't really believe, as they say, in anything. It is difficult for me to do so. The first part of my life was very hard.

Congrats to Randy, who guessed quite right. I thought that linking the two would have been a good idea, but I guess it's a rather obvious strategy to some people.

Was the 18th Geek of the Week.

Two Truths and a Lie:

Almost forgot to do this one. Here are my three statements:

1. One of my relatives has a picture of George W. Bush with Lincoln on one side and George Washington on the other. All three men bowing their head in prayer.

2. My husband is 10 years older than me.

3. I have a very large tattoo of Mary and Jesus across my back.

meeple

Truth, Truth, Lie Revealed

Since it is Saturday, I thought I'd go ahead and reveal the answers.

1. My stepfather, the hard core republican, has the picture of George W. Bush in his house. I was surprised that a picture like this exsisted. I thought they only make things like that after presidency or after they die.

2. My husband is not 10 years older than me. He is 15 years older than me. This one was tricky because our age difference can be very apparent in pictures and many of my answers would give away my age.

3. I do have a tattoo on my back of Mary and Jesus. If I get a good picture taken, I'll post it later tonight. The design came from the painting called, Madonna of the Streets. And to answer the question about other tattoos, I also have a tattoo on my upper leg of a dragonlike seahorse.

Two Truths and a Lie:

I was once given a huge kiss by Marina Sirtis from Star Trek TNG

I'm a licensed pilot.

I'm allergic to bananas.

meeple

The truths were that I am indeed allergic to bananas and the lucky person I am I did indeed once get a very nice kiss from the lovely Marina Sirtis. As for being a licenced pilot the truth is I am afraid to fly.

The Marina Sirtis inncident took place over 10 years ago. I had a friend who was doing a documentary on sci fi conventions for cable access (They did a very nice job). They were filming stuff at a convention in San Jose and got permission to interview several of the media stars at the convention including several from the TV show Doctor Who. My friend knew nothing of Doctor Who so called me to drive down to San Jose (It was a two hour drive) to do the interviews with Marina Sirtis from Star Trek being the first one. I told him I would love to and made the mistake of telling him I would be slightly nervous because I had a crush on Marina.

So they are setting up and Marina arrives about 10 minutes before I do. My friend tells her what I said! So she's sitting on the couch and I walk in. My friend says "Marnia, this is Brian who will be doing the interview" and Marina stands up, walks over and give me a big kiss. I Have never been so shocked in my life and I think I turned a shade of red rarely seen on planet earth. The others in the room I think nearly died laughing at my shocked reaction.

Was the XXth Geek of the Week.

Two Truths and a Lie:

OK, since travel was one of the starting themes of this questioning, let's go with some travel tales:

1) I came within inches of a bull's horns in the bullfight arena in Pamplona, Spain

2) Diarrhea struck in the middle of a friend's wedding in Chiang Mai, Thailand -- and I was serving as Best Man

3) I lost my sunglasses down one of the exhibits in a toilet museum in Tokoname, Japan

meeple

And finally, exposing the lie: I've never been to Japan (although I hope to by summer)...

This should be fun.

1. I've seen the movie This is Spinal Tap over 100 times.
2. I played keyboards in a rock band in high school.
3. The first concert I attended was Hall & Oates.

Ok, here were the truths and lie:

CaptainCaveman wrote:

True. In fact, I probably had already seen it over 100 times by the time I graduated from high school.
CaptainCaveman wrote:

False. In fact, I've never played in a rock band, though I did play guitar for a church band for a while until they could find a competent guitar player.
CaptainCaveman wrote:
3. The first concert I attended was Hall & Oates.

True. Donny Iris opened for them (http://www.vh1.com/artists/az/iris_donnie/bio.jhtml) and the show was great. I've always respected the duo - great songwriters and man can that guy sing.
