Ok... so I'm a recent lurker with a couple of posts and I'm gradually getting more involved in the BGG community. Loving it so far! My wife and I are looking to "Level Up" and get some games that are a little more involved/heavy. We've been gaming for about a year now (thanks to Wil W. & Tabletop for the intro to games)

We're both big geeks and we love the time it lets us share. We've gone from gateway games like Elder Sign and Ticket to Ride, to very slightly more involved games like Discworld Ankh-Morpork and Lords of Waterdeep, and more recently Seasons.

Basically what we're looking for are some new (to us) games that take between 90 minutes to 3 hours to play (give or take).

We mostly like games with a sci-fi or fantasy theme such as Lords of Waterdeep, Smallworld and Empires of the Void.
We don't really enjoy games like Agricola, Village or Stone Age (I have some them on my iPhone and enjoy them, but the themes don't particularly grab us when we play games as a couple or with friends).

There are some exceptions, we didn't particularly enjoy Wiz War, but we really love playing Carcassonne! Also, Yedo looks like something we'd really enjoy and we're planning on picking it up

Obviously the games need to be two player friendly and even if it doesn't particularly fit the sci-fi/fantasy theme, we're open to left field suggestions.
Even if the game seems incredibly obvious to you, please feel free to mention it because we are still fairly new to games.

So over to you BGGers
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

From the sound of what your describing this might be your particular cup of Cimmerian ale.

The game was designed by the same Italian fellows who brought us the tremendously popular (but significantly heavier) War of the Ring game, and in my opinion this one is considerably underrated. It really is fairly easy to grasp the underlying concept of victory in the game but there are a number ways to achieve it and juggling your decisions between the various branches along the victory tree can be quite enjoyable! Territorial conflict (both military and political), card management, dice tactics, player bidding, and an overarching strategy are highlights of this game. Meaty!!

Now to the less than great parts. It is a 2-4 player game but I have found it is much more enjoyable as a 4 player than a 2. I have to admit I have only played it about half a dozen times so your experience could be different than mine.
The other thing is that the game is not really about Conan himself, but about controlling Conan so that your empire can reap the benefits of his actions. The player who can control Conan has a significant advantage over the player(s) who does not, and it takes a subtle and experienced hand to negate that advantage over the course of the game.

I won't pull any punches -- the first time you play will almost certainly take at least 3 hours, but I found the learning curve to be steep and the game to take much less time the more I played.

Anyway I hope you consider the Age of Conan option. Best of luck!!

This one doesn't really take very long to play, but I think it may be up your guys' alley.

It's great fun, and you can never just play one game! It's addicting!

Well, let's go down the list of CDGs here...

If you're looking for something decently heavy.

This one is a good two player extravaganza... but it may be for the NEXT level up. It's not terribly complex... but it is fairly complex, especially given its depth of tactical decision making.

It's a riot to play, though, and very funny.
