Another little card game I had wanted to get to the table for ages. I adore the card game mechanic of " you must vote with cards in your hand for certain values/colors/etc. to GET the point values up-- but you must SAVE some of said cards to be awarded said points when scoring time comes" --it's probably tied with my other favorite mechanic which is worker placement.

I loved this, Juan thought it was alright, A-M hated it. She does not like games where you are " building" something ( a row,a tableau of cards, a city, et al) and one of the main mechanics of the game is for other people to tear down/destroy your stuff you have built either bit by bit or wholly. I don't think she will play this again but I hope someone will.. I loved it--- even though ( Stop me if you have heard this before) I sucked at it.

I was actually doing fairly decent for a round and a half--- but then through a combo of very bad card draws and my misuse of the trumpets thus tearing down some of my OWN walls ( ::eye roll: -- I ended up quite last. But looking fwd. to playing again !!

I AM indeed glad we got to try this. But I cannot remember the last time a game caused me a literal physical headache. Details to come.

UPDATE with said details. As I have stated in the past , I will usually play something to the bitter end no matter HOW I feel about it. Juan multiple time graciously told us all we could quit, but we were playing a short game and as I have repeated in multiple entries about this ordeal of a game -- since I had actually gotten a HEADACHE trying to understand this game-- I sure as hell wasn't quitting and having my headache be in vain !!!

It's a shame too, I love obscure off the beaten path games, I love pretty bits, I love interesting dice, I ADORE deduction--- this game has all of those including indeed " DICE" that are actually three small multi sided sticks that remind me of I CHING wands.

But, oh my God-- Take CLUE-- then make the WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO DEDUCE change repeatedly during the game-- instead of a straight forwards notebook-- make the " partial reveal" mechanic some godforsaken Grid that even now makes about as much sense to me as reading Faulkner in Serbo-Croatian-- add a tedious ( but we house ruled it to make it less so ) roll and move element-- and there you have this nightmare.

AM GOT it long before I did.. if I DID get it at all but I THINK I did -- she is the only one to make two correct accusations to win !! I do still thank Juan for this playing--- our mutual friend time as I have cited before gives me crap all the time because he says since I pretty much love everything I play-- I give EVERY GAME 8s 9s and 10s. Well always glad to play a stinker so I can add more 2s and 3s to my ratings. This gets a VERY generous 3 and I don't ever want to play it or LOOK at it ever again.

I think we played our first two rounds wrong.. but this weekend was a double header from this designer -- see yesterday's Alea Iacta Est ! -- will check around here to make sure we do everything correct next time.

UPDATE

First of all, thanks to wonderful fellow and game designer Mr. Jeff-- creator of TWO games I adore on our lists for this particular weekend- this yummy game AND Alea Iacta Est !! -- I sent him our conundrum that we were confused if we were playing this right- ( Do you choose what to your individual slivers of pie or must you eat or collect your ENTIRE serving in one action ?)

We found out indeed from Mr. Jeff we WERE doing this right which caused Juan to initially ponder-- well then this seems too easy. But THEN ( this is another indicator of this wonderful little game's shocking depth) we realized especially after word from the designer--then the root game is NOT In the eating and collecting.. virtually the ENTIRE game .. is in the dividing !

I didn't do my math very well esp. in the last round about how to plan to have majorities of pie flavors.. AM and J then finished very close.. me way back--- excited to play this again !!

K 25 35 22 --- 82
AM 28 42 34 -- 104
J 34 41 39 --- 114

How obsessed are we already with this little game? J said AM kept losing sleep after we played it thinking about more and more better pie dividing strategies !!

A controversially wittier relative of Turn The Tide-- which is indeed a better game-- but was finally glad to get another little RK to the table. A rare win for me.. but only because I truly lucked out in my cards and when I played them-- the fact that the angry bitter militantly single vampire WON a game with the word RELATIONSHIP in it against the sweet married folks still carries a mighty huge serving of irony.

With A-M needing a nap break, J and I got to get some of my 2 player ditties to the table I had been wanting to try for a long time including this lovely little game.

Beautiful cards-- involving choices and gameplay--nifty little pans and sticks.. plus it's another game about cooking and food !!I love cooking and food games !!

I think I was more taken with this than Juan.. but even though I started an early lead-- I had MANY baskets to get a huge hand of cards-- and yet STILL could not cook in the final plays. .. Juan made some huge buttered sets and handily won. So glad to have this game in the rotation now, will be another wonderful little thing to teach to non gamers.

Being a vampire of course, I had wanted to try this 2 player game for ages--- but some of the just slightly fiddly rules about when/ if you look at the cards to create an encounter didn't quite click to me from just the page.

But as usual Juan is a splendid teacher and I loved this game as much as I thought I would !!

I had a bad game of it though---As Drac of course , I THOUGHT I was being careful to only put two of my coffins out at the beginning -- but Juan found them both quickly. THEN before I could get somewhere to switch out cards-- Juan got to my space and did the double view of everyone's supply proving I had no more target cards on the board-- thus staking DraculaVampireMackdaddyKel. Can't wait to play again !!

SCORE :

Kel caught 2 victims-- Juan wins in reveal I had no target cards on board at a given turn.

Another little game I was grandly taken with that Juan was just mildly amused by. I think each card having it's own mechanic effect as you try to spell M U R D E R is very clever as is your dangerous card attrition if you keep using your cards to deflect the opp's effects. But I can see how this can be just TOO tactical and chaotically frustrating to some -- as well as perhaps too light and simple. Gorgeous cards though and another find to play with non-Gamer folk.

Juan Wins MURDER completed, Kel left with M R D .

As I have oft cited, my brainpower on GETTING X or Y game is wildly inconsistent. I can make a decent showing on a Splotter first play, help teach some Wallace titles, and sometimes be the go-to guy who can add up scores the fastest. And then sometimes, I need a player aid to play tic tac toe and I do everything BACKWARDS plan-wise in a medium to light game.

Thankfully Juan cured me of another of these latter ills teaching me this nifty little game. Not only was I reading the rules on and off for a year and never making any sense of the action trade off mechanism, I totally couldn't READ the tiles. ( I kept thinking the roads where often part of roofs, hence my cluelessness of how to gauge the walls.)

Thankfully all of that is taken care of and Juan was kind enough to make this our last two player game and teach it to me since he is not terribly taken with this.

And whaddya know, I wrote off a win early when 5 tiles flipped quickly.. but I totally lucked out on other tile actions and placements and while he knew who I was ( as Jack) for the last 2/3 of the game-- I still pulled out the 6 hour glasses for the win !! Totally stoked to teach this now to some of my less Gamer with a capital G friends.

KEL WINS AS JACK 6 HOURGLASSES

A hoot of a game with an elegantly simple design and whooda thunk a rather straightforward area-control game would manifest this much hilarious player interaction??

You just set down your houses in the areas you are trying to get points in eventually, then you set down businesses that either increase or decrease the amount of points an area will score -- this pattern rotates until everything is filled up. It's so simple it seems like it might be an inane waste of time at first blush-- yet it's a blast.

I usually am very poor at these kind of planning games, especially at first play. I make all kinds of plans indeed, but something throws them off later and I am adrift. ( This is why I am an IFFY chess player at best.) Yet I managed to score a healthy second by one point !!

This game also yielded the following entertaining quotes :

Ana Maria is once again recycling Bazongas.
Tony is the Redwood hating monster. ( Roughly parallel to David becoming the CleopatraMeaniehead)
No Bazongas for Highcliff.

Kel in obscene phone call voice " Hello.. heheh heheh I am the cobbler of Riverside.. I am next to the library-- bring your shoes to the library kids.. heh heh heh"

A wonderful new game to discover, I wish perhaps it was more readily available-- added to my quasi-grail list.

Our final game of the evening and final game of the night is this quasi-worker placement/action selection that I adore for obvious work -related reasons since I am a classical musician for a living.

Not only did Tony do a superb Job teaching this , he basically literally SCHOOLED us all on how you play it. Never ever in my previous plays has the winner broken 80..This game I consider a massive success for myself as while I was far off from winning - I got more points than ever was amassed by the WINNER every other time played this game.

I was making a run at second place for most of the game--but Aimee made the wise choice to get a ahead of me in the opera house purchasing at the end-- and despite not having time to fill Milan up with composers-- she still got he points for owning them and when it go around to me, there was no Milan houses left for me to buy -- firmly ensconcing her in 2nd. Tony as stated school us all the most monstrous score I have ever seen in this game!!

I adore this game, Juan and AM were not so taken with it as they astutely observed if you are playing this worker placement/action selection game with 2 experts and one person who has at least played it before -- then if you make an economic planning mistake early on, you indeed will never recover. The team of Juan and A-M should consider this a definite success though- I totally expected their early mistakes to render their final sore under 50, but they recovered nicely. I can't wait to play again !!

RESULTS : Tony 132 ( !!!!!!!) Aimee 93 Juan/AM 65 Kel 84
