Last weekend a group of old friends came to stay, chaps who I used to live with as an undergraduate along with their partners. The aim for these weekends is usually to catch up and have a few drinks, however being at our house I earmarked a few games in case the opportunity arrived.

None of those coming were regular boardgamers bar a few party games and a bit of poker, so my hopes weren't high to play anything too deep.

However as it turns out I ended up playing quite a few games and convincing a few who came they should really invest in some themselves. Sometimes I worry that as boardgame geeks we're little better than drug dealers...

Here's a list of what we played and how it came about:

People began to arrive on the Saturday afternoon, we had planned to have a barbeque as the weather was nice then to head into town to go to a few pubs. When everyone arrived we spent the afternoon sitting in the sun chatting and drinking pimms!

Unfortunately the partner of one of those coming had just sprained her ankle running a 5k which kind of ruled out walking into town. So instead once we'd eaten I suggested a friendly game of Wits & Wagers, and so it began...

Wits & Wagers went down well, so after one of my friends suggested a game of articulate. He and his girlfriend were on their way to a weeks holiday and had brought along a few games to play.

Despite some of those being a little over competitive on the quiz front we teamed up and embarked on Articualate.

You know you've got them, when shortly after finishing one game someone says "whats next?"

Unfortunately I don't own many party games or those that will play with too many as my gaming group is typically small. However I do own a pack of cards and with 9 of us I figured we'd have enough for a reasonable game of Werewolf...

Werewolf went down even better than expected! And after a number of rounds as I gradually included a few extra roles everyone really got into it. But after we'd been playing for well over an hour we decided to move on.

At this point my wife suggested a game of Once Upon A Time. This may have been a mistake, it was late, there were too many of us a few of whom had had a few too many drinks. After a couple of rounds, during which the rules had to be repeated often and stories regularly making little sense we decided to call it a night (although a few playing enjoyed it enough to suggest playing another time with less people while more sober).

The next morning our only plan was to go out for Sunday lunch. So while waiting around someone suggested a game of monopoly deal. I had pushed this one on them at a previous occasion which led to a few of them buying a copy.

As its only a game for 5 I sat this one out.

After lunch a few had to leave, while sad this opened up a whole new range of games which we could play with those left. I bought myself Galaxy Trucker only a week ago as a birthday present and so was keen to crack it out.

Much enjoyment was had but it had to be cut short after only 2 rounds as a couple more had to leave...

This left only 3. My wife suggested Small World, one of her favourite games. Always an easy sell as 'its sort of like risk but fun and with flying giants'.

I lost dramatically, dwarves are always a mistake...

At this point we took a break for tea. Afterwards my friend suggested a game of a whist variant, he is of the card gambling disposition. No need to say he trounced us, but it was fun.

Finally to top off the weekend late on the Sunday evening I recommended a game of citadels. To a fan of poker I thought this would work well with deduction and second guessing. And I wasnt wrong.

That finished my weekend of catching up with some old friends, getting to play some games and potentially producing some new converts (once they convince their better halves that they really do want to spend their Sunday nights playing boardgames...)
