Risk was one of my first board games. Way before finding BGG.
Apparently I misread the rules and in my youth, never bothered to reread them.
This week I thought it was time that my girlfriend play risk at least once and I quickly scanned the rules to refresh myself as it's been so long since I've played.
I was amazed to discover that it's possible to lose more than one unit in a single attack if both players are rolling more than one dice!

I've discovered all kinds of things about getting a garden completely redone in the last month and I've blogged about it elsewhere on BGG.
I laid turf about a month ago and found that doing so was a sure fire way to ensure a month of zero rain. Yesterday I bought a new lawn mower because my new lawn is starting to look like it needs its first trim and today: rain!
In summary, I've learned that if you want rain, buy a lawn mower.

Elemental Clash is a customizable card game that has some similarities to Magic the Gathering. It has been available in various print and play forms for a while. Andreas, the creator of the game, recently started a kickstarter campaign with new and improved artwork to try and see the game published. Sadly it did not meet the funding level required.
For me, the shipping costs outside the US made the game difficult to purchase but I still contributed at the "print and play" level. Andreas furnished me with the card images after my contribution to the kickstarter campaign and my artscow version arrived this week.
What I've learned is that despite not reaching it's kickstarter goal, Elemental Clash is an amazing game and is well worth getting hold of.

I learned that the Spanish version of Briscola (a currently favorite card game) is not Brisca as I'd long believed, but La Brisca.

I'm no philologist. But I find the differing and inconsistent (to me) uses of the definite article in various languages to be fascinating. I've interacted with enough non-native English speakers to know that the use of the is not as straightforward as it seems. (Like combining it with a possessive pronoun, e.g. "She rode her the bicycle...") And I'm certain I've treated my neighbors and colleagues to more than a few chuckles with my treatment of der, die, and das. One interesting thing is that I can't recall a single time when such an error actually caused confusion, which makes me wonder that if the misuse of articles isn't really significant, is their presence in language all that important to start with?

At any rate, until this week it never really occurred to me that a card game name might require a definite article. The Bridge? The Spades?

I'm no philologist. But sometimes I kinda wish I was. There's some interesting stuff involved in how we communicate.

This week I have learnt that you can win this game easier if you focus on developments more than the momument thingies, and that coinage is a really good one to get

We were on vacation in Napa this last weekend and I learned my taste in wine is getting more expensive. Fortunately, I don't drink wine that often, because I don't think I could afford it otherwise
