Yet another Nerf find. This one the CS-6 Longstrike, for $5.95. Just waiting on a free replacement part from Hasbro, and then off to Amazon it goes. Beauty of a weapon. Like the Break Barrel last month, another one I'm tempted to just keep and turn into a cosplay weapon.

Got two bags of Legos; one at Village Thrift in Woodbridge for $4.90 and another at Goodwill in Woodbridge for $4.99 - about 1/3 of the VT one and 1/2 of the GW one were other kinds of blocks, but I still think it is a good deal as there were a heck of a lot of specialty bricks: connectors, wheels, props, etc. This will be great for Lego for Serious Play sessions.

I think that all right-thinking people in this country are sick and tired of being told that ordinary, decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am.

I like to collect tropical shirts. (Actually, I do more "accumulation" than serious collecting.) There has to be something really interesting about the shirt for me to buy it -- there's plenty of lame tropicals out there and I certainly don't want those in my collection. If it's not something I would wear, I don't buy it.

Anyway, about a week ago I ran across this one and just had to have it. Here's the shirt front:

And here's a detail of the ladies that appear on it:

EDIT: According to the label, it's a Pierre Cardin.

When I was my son's age, I was also a twelve year old boy. I also enjoyed, quite a good deal, actually, the "Choose Your Own Adventure" books that were all the rage at the time. The "crème de la crème" of this genre was, indisputably, the "Fighting Fantasy" books originally written by Steve Jackson (The UK version) and Ian Livingstone. The franchise continued on for some time, with other authors contributing their efforts, but always under the "Steve Jackson & Ian Livingstone Fighting Fantasy" banner.

I've found a few of these over the last couple of years, and my son tears into them. Thus, I'm quite happy to run into these. I *may* have found three at one time, which I thought was dandy.

However, this one day earlier in September, I found eighteen.

EIGHTEEN!

And only one of them was a copy we already had.

At a buck fifty each, with every fifth one being free, it was a no brainer to fill the cart.

I may need to read a few myself.

My son is stationed at Incirlik AFB, Turkey. We bought him a can of coffee that we knew he wanted to try (Cafe du Monde Cajun coffee), but when we told him we were sending it, he mentioned that they are not allowed to have any plug-in appliances in their dorms. But he does have a stove in the kitchenette, so percolators are fair game.

Didn't want to get one of those crummy blue metal percolators they sell in the camping stores, so I started looking at the TS when I'd go. Oddly enough it took a while. Finally scored an old Corning 9 cup stovetop percolator for $2. It's not super-looking, but it'll get him by.

Just like this, only ugly

Walked into an "Indoor Garage Sale Store" yesterday to see them poring over a toy I'd never seen before - an Amsco Marvel Adventure playset. In fact, they were looking over two of this super-rare toy. It was all cardboard cutouts and standees, but I could see it was some heavy nostalgia. They were having trouble pricing it, so I got on my smartphone and together we figured out that they should just put it up on the internets for auction (I suggested they wait until December). They also had a PotA one that they'd already priced at $40. It looked complete, and I'm betting it'll sell for more than that come the holidays, so I grabbed it. Turns out it's missing just a single plastic base. Sweet!

Here's pics of both:

This pachinko machine has been sitting in my local thrift store for a few weeks now. I haven't gotten up the nerve yet to buy it.

For those who don't know, pachinko is basically a Japanese hybrid of a slot machine and a pinball game. You fire balls into the playing field, and if they fall into the right places, you get more balls (the balls serve as your currency for gambling purposes). These older ones are entirely mechanical, with no significant electronics other than a jackpot light and a refill light.

I know next to nothing about vintage pachinko machines, but I've been looking into it since this machine turned up. So far, I've figured out that this one is from the 1970s, and could be worth the sticker price ($100) if it's in good condition. If it needs restoration (which appears to be the case), then it's worth considerably less.

This particular thrift store gives out coupons when you donate, and I could potentially get it for as little as $60... but I just don't know how much work it's going to take to get it working and looking good.

I have an annoying combination of expensive taste in footwear, and big feet, so I was delighted to find a pair of size 13 Trask black "monk strap" dress shoes for $5. I should buy 14s because my left foot is a 14 while my right is a 13 -- but these are a fairly large 13, they're comfortable, and the leather is pretty supple... and thrifters can't be choosers. From what little I can learn online about the company, the leather might be elk.

If money weren't so tight at the moment I'd have them resoled right away, but it can wait a few months.

What monk strap shoes look like, in case you were wondering...

Now this is something special. One of a kind...well...here's the description from the artist's website:

"Grateful Dead "Steal Your Face" Burl Veneer Mandala Art Wall Hangings - Camphor Burl veneer Mandalas wall hangings inlayed with Mother of Pearl. Gordon R. Merrick, designs and fabricates one of a kind psychedelic art Mandala wall hangings using burled veneers to create exotic kaleidoscopic imagery. One of a kind Burl veneer wooden Mandalas hand crafted and finished to an ultra fine sheen. Made of the finest exotic woods and materials found in the world. There will be a limited edition of 100 Mandalas done with the Grateful Dead"s "Steal Your Face" inlayed with Mother Of Pearl, Walnut Burl & Camphor Burl."

You really need to see it up close to realize how wonderful this piece is. The best part? $7.99 @ GW. The worst part? I think someone who didn't know the amount of time and effort that went into this used it as a coffee table. It's not in that bad of shape but dings & scratched aplenty up close.

Any woodworkers out there?

edit: added closeup of inlay

Lego set 3658, limited edition with a police helicopter, a bank robber, and some neat details. It was $9.99, way more than I'd normally think to pay for a Lego set, but a quick check on Amazon showed the cheapest one to be over $60. Just inventoried it, and it's missing one minor piece, and one major one (a rotor blade). They've already been ordered from Lego.

I have been looking to pick up a globe for my son since he is about to join the passport club at school. Found this cool 12" globe of earth. The satellite picture is from one day in 1972. The globe is metal and sits on a two piece plastic stand and I paid $9.99. Still need to find a globe that shows the countries for my son.(not my picture but it is the same)

Got a Tomy/Racemasters AFX race set (this one):
. Price was $5. When I went to check it for completeness, I was hurriedly told by the seller that it was complete, they'd "just played it the other day". Uh-huh, right.

Turns out it's way MORE than complete, with about a dozen extra pieces of track, and a half-dozen cars. The set is $60, individual track pieces are about $8, and cars about $12. So I figure I got my $5 worth.

I collect View-Master reels, and I really like odd subjects. I've got reels of Chicago Hot Dog Stands, handmade "Vladmaster" reels, "Dogs of the Soviet Space Program", and so on, but the one type of reel that has evaded me in all my years of collecting is the "Personal Reel," where a hobbyist takes 3D photos with a special camera, then chops up the slides and puts the images in their own reels.

Today, at S.C.R.A.P., I found the following personal reels, for 25¢ each.

1 reel of somebody's wedding (well, right after the wedding, as they jump in their car all covered with "JUST MARRIED" signs.)

1 reel of "THE SHOP" where somebody worked.

7 reels of mountain climbing and camping (there's some pretty good photography on these.)

1 fantastically boring reel with seven three-dimensional views of "Laura," "Fritz," and "Mother" standing around outside a house and in front of a car.

2 reels of whitewater kayaking.

1 reel of neon signs at night -- maybe Los Angeles? Portland?

3 empty reels, which I'm keeping for when I need to repair damaged commercial reels.

...and my new favorite...

1 reel of 1950's people all dressed up, in a church basement, playing PING-PONG! IN 3D! I love this!

not bad, the original would have cost over $150, possibly approaching $200 with all the lettering on it.
