I love a good boardgame as much as the next Geek. But I also love my video games.

There is a Category tag on the database for video game themed games, but my intention here is to try to flag up the boardgames that feel and play most like the video game originals. The best of both worlds.

There are boardgames out there based directly on video games, or video game franchises/IPs. Some are based on a particular genre of video games, or are aping the mechanisms. Some might even be based on a video game, that was based on a boardgame. Ahem...

All of these count, as long as the board game came afterwards. So Sid Meier's Civilization: The Board Game would count, but Civilization wouldn't. If there is uncertainty (ie a game was released simultaneously on iOS, say, and in physical form) then I would err on the side of inclusion.

Please add your own!

Let's start with the obvious one!

Civilisation games have been one of my favourite genres in video games. I had a copy of the original Sid Meier video game, and played III to death in uni, but never knew it was directly inspired by the boardgame until I came here.

This is a greatly simplified version of the videotape series, and feels quite like III (and II) in a lot of ways. This of course means it is a very light version of its granddaddy - which I'm hoping to find someone with a copy of one day so I can play it.

Weighing probably more in pounds than it costs in Pounds Sterling, this is a motherlode of a game. Quite well received, by many accounts. Not a game I'd have time for these days (or a table big enough!) so I'd wish I'd found it early, when I was addicted to the MMO...

This one I did find. My better half made the mistake of buying me a couple of starter decks, our first Xmas together. Unknown to her, I used to be quite the Magic fiend in high school. Back then, I had no money - nowadays, however...

The big thing this had going for it over a lot of other TCGs was the theme. A popular franchise, the ability to play each character class in a different way - even the humour was just like the MMO. It even allowed you to play co-op against raids and dungeons, mimicking the game in other ways.

And it played a lot like Magic: though it had a much-improved resource system that eliminated mana screw; and combat was more strategic due to being targeted. It wasn't perfect (card draw differences replaced mana screw, and the secondary market economy was heavily based around and influenced by the popularity of the loot cards for the MMO.)

The past tense is used here, as I stopped playing over a year ago, and the game license itself has been killed in the last few weeks.

Another WoW game - there sure are a lot of them!

This one I got as a subscription reward to UK video game magazine, PC Gamer. I'm glad I got it as it led me here to BGG - though I don't get it onto the table enough!

The feel of this game is just right. It doesn't play long, but it has the right mechanics in the right place - I get a wave of nostalgia for vanilla WoW when I play it. Plus, FFG components. Shiny.

Another genre this time. First Person Shooters (like Doom, Quake and Unreal Tournament) were to the 90s what MMOs are to the last ten years. I played loads, and Frag riffs off the genre wonderfully.

I've never had the opportunity to play, but have seen it played a few times. You even have spawn points and I think people have been known to 'camp'. Just the sort of example I'm after, here!

How could I not mention this game?

As a kid, we never had a SNES or Sega Megadrive. We had an Atari 2600. Cheap console and blocky graphics - even for the standards of the day. But it had Rampage - which was a wonderful video game.

Chomping civilians, punching your opponent's monster, demolishing buildings. All you need is a pint of milk and some fruit, and you'd have everything a growing kid needs.

The boardgame looks silly. But in an awesome way. I would love to get this game, but I think it's a recipe for losing meeples under the sofa...

Don't know much about this one. The video game itself is a classic (though not as fun and bizarre as Wolfenstein, in my eyes!)

And apparently this boardgame has a 'Victoria's Secret' variant.

Ah, Age of Empires. I played quite a few of these games.

I remember the blank-eyed, staring faces on the box for AoE II. I remember sending out my stone age guys in their matching blue shorts to chop wood. Then losing them. And building elephant archers in the first AoE... and being very confused - how do you 'build' elephants? I have no idea, to this day. I just remember being vaguely disappointed they weren't elephants with bows.

I remember the tactic was, invariably, to chop, mine, fish and hunt EVERYTHING, building up a HUGE army, and then sending it all to my foolish, AI enemies. Sorties and guerilla attacks are for noobs, doncherknow.

A train of death and destruction followed. Sometimes my PC would crash.

*sigh* Nostalgia...

I've been told the boardgame is amazing. But probably doesn't have any elephants.

I don't want to put words in Ted Alspach's mouth (unless they are 'Here's a copy of the expansion') but this game is pretty much inspired by SimCity. It's really the reason I picked it up in the first place.

I loved SimCity. I loved managing a city's needs and wants. I loved tweaking the tax rates just so, so that I'd get an influx of business and residents. Sticking a marina in just the right place to get gorgeous mansions, and putting bus stops and subways everywhere. Seeing my little city grow, with no particular goal in mind, was zenlike awesomeness.

Of course, I often chose the option of blitzing the whole thing with a tornado. Y'know. Whatever took my fancy.

Suburbia is fantastic, and feels like a light SimCity boardgame - just what the doctor ordered.

Based around 8-bit fantasy games of yore, this is deemed to be a very replayable 2-player game. Launched as part of the Minigames Library Kickstarter, and did very well.

It's actually based on the characters from World of Indines, all by the same designer. BattleCON: War of Indines is probably the most well-known and popular of the series.

Consider this as an example of a unique take on a video game inspired board game. Instead of taking on the role of the video game protagonists, you're the background NPCs instead: and the aforementioned protagonists are the thorn in your side, ruining your plans and being a general pain in the ass.

I'd love to play this game, but it's a brutal, big daddy of a box - quite a price point, but with lots inside. Perhaps someone might buy me a copy - would you kindly?

Deck builder Resident Evil has a number of releases, expansions and so on now. It's not the best game out there but I have it de to me interest in the video game series.

Despite its' flaws, I still prefer it to the "technically superior" Dominion, Thunderstone etc which I find more boring.
