I buy a lot of games. It's the thing I primarily spend my money on. So this month I want to pick your mind about how you spend your gaming budget.

How do new games generally come into your house? Do you buy them? Or does one of the other people in the family? New? Thrifted? What's the story?

Okay, in the interest of full disclosure, I must admit that this question is somewhat self serving.

Some of us have older kids, and some of us have younger kids, and some have both. I'd be interested in helping everyone to learn from the experience of others. So, if you would, can you recommend one game that is still in print for every age from 3 or 4 years old to your current oldest. What is the MUST play game for each of those ages?

Hopefully that isn't confusing. I'll get my answer in first in case an example helps.

So tell me, do you have a gaming budget? Or do you simply just buy things whenever you want? Or maybe you just don't buy much of anything anymore. How do you work out how much you will spend on games so that your family is still able to eat?

Rough gaming week for me. We were super busy all week long, plus were sick a lot, so none of us really felt up to much. I also ended up having to run a few RPGs, so they took up most of the gaming time.

Got a chance to try Firefly. It wasn't bad, but I wasn't terribly impressed either. I certainly don't need to own it, as I wouldn't want to play it all that much. I guess it fit the theme, but it didn't really need it.

Boggle Jr. x 2
Scrabble Junior x 1
Sentinels of the Multiverse x 1
Firefly: The Game x 1

You can view the details of my week here: Item for Geeklist "What Did You Play This Weekend? 11/18/2013"

Dungeon Roll x 3
Alien Frontiers x 1
Rialto x 1
Roll Through the Ages: The Late Bronze Age x 1

The highlight of the week for me were the plays last Sunday. It was the first time I got to try the added stuff for Alien Frontiers, and man did they improve the game! My second crack at Rialto went much smoother, as I could now focus on strategy instead of trying to play the game.

Last week was also good since we now have solid news that my wife's family in Leyte are all OK. The storm surge DID hit their place, but since they are some distance away from the coast they had time to react, and thus no one died. Procurement of supplies as well as reconstruction will be a bear though, but it could have been much worse.

Plenty of gaming for me, especially on the weekend, but for all the wrong reasons. My older daughter caught chicken pox, and that is dangerous for her. She will have to stay in the hospital for at least eleven days, it seems (this is day seven, so we are hoping she gets out soon). After we got over the original scare and she got over the itching, it was mostly boredom, but of course we played a lot. After the first two days, I was also allowed to take off mask and gloves, which makes things much easier.

(My daughter is immunosuppressd and cannot be vaccinated. So when other people choose not to vaccinate their kids, for whatever reasons, they put her life in danger).

Games, games and more games!

Not the busiest of weeks of gaming - my husband had to work evenings all last week, so it was just Friday afternoon with my friend, the usual Friday evening gaming, and a few games over the weekend. My games order from Germany arrived, so I now have my own copy of Qwixx and Palaces of Carrara, and the expansion for Core Worlds. My daughter was picked for the school quiz team, so I pulled out Game of Knowledge to practice her trivia. She also has been requesting Bloody Legacy all week, after discovering it last weekend, and making up her own cards - I only had opportunities to play it with her twice though - too much school stuff going on!

Games with other adults:

4 x Qwixx
4 x The City

1 x Alles im Eimer, Factory Fun, Haggis, Hanging Gardens, Hey That's my Fish, Lancashire Railways, Lost Cities, Notre Dame, Palaces of Carrara, Roll through the Ages, Seasons, Showmanager, Torres, TransEuropa

Games with my children:

2 x Bloody Legacy

1 x Crazy Chefs, Game of Knowledge

Quite a bit of new stuff for me this week, which is always a pleasure, alongside a few oldies...
* The Little Prince: Make Me a Planet - from initial impressions I love the elegance of this.
* Mutant Meeples
* Lords of War: Elves versus Lizardmen
* Takenoko
* Gear & Piston
* Coup - we couldn't help but play five times in a row.
* Shadows over Camelot: The Card Game
* Cribbage - in our work crib league where every match so far has been a draw!

We quite like this but have come to the conclusion that we don't play it often enough to be very good at it!

Helena and I also played

Race for the Galaxy x 4
Agricola

Whilst one or more of the kids joined in with
Carcassonne: The Discovery
Albion
Scrabble
Château Roquefort
Boggle x2
Frank's Zoo (this kept us occupied whilst we were waiting to talk to Daniel's teachers at his parents' evening)

not to mention The Creature that Flattened Madchester, something I designed years ago in which ravaging monsters destroy a lego town, resisted by plucky (but fragile) humans. Matthew really enjoyed this so I will have to improve the rules a bit so we can try again.

It had been a while since we'd played this one, but we took it down on a recent visit with Oma (wife's mother) - she likes to play, too. And had a lovely time. The artwork on the cards is so funny and surprising, and to play well, you sort of have to unlock a different part of the brain than with most other games I play.

Other plays:

1x Pirate Dice: Voyage on the Rolling Seas - new game, pretty fun and fast
1x Smash Up - 3 player with son & daughter, clearly my son's favorite out of his birthday gifts
1x Legends of Andor - we won the first, intro 'Legend' as a family in this co-op. It clearly needs some careful planning on timing to pull out a win.

I had stored Formula Dé Mini at my parents for a while but decided to bring it home the last time I visited them. And since the Formula 1 Grand Prix has been a no contest this year with Vettel a runaway leader, I decided to play a couple of solo games to get some excitement from the Formula 1!

Otherwise a quiet week playing wise, as I'm rather busy with my studies these days. Calculus... ugh!

2 x Gulo Gulo
1 x Scrabble

I think the only game we played this week was Biblios. That was fine by me, though, because I’ve been wanting to introduce that to the family. Interestingly, I won the first game I played of this, when I was taught it at a local game con. When I taught my son last week, he won his first game. When we later played with my wife, she won her first game. What’s going to happen when we all play again???
