We started our day with David teaching this brilliant game. At the outset I had a smidgen of reservation as I thought this might be a just-a-tad-too-fiddly El Grande -- despite this game's splendid reputation. I was so happy to be wrong because as we got through the first one, I realized the wonderful little cube tower was perhaps the MOST innovative combat resolver I had ever seen -- and the setting up your action cards with the 2nd half of the given actions being only flipped over AS the round progresses ( the first half being face -up) adds a hidden-info game-show-y sort of element that makes me happy in ANY game !!

And wonder of wonders .. my usual status of doing atrocious on a first play of anything medium/heavy didn't happen. I did a rather simple strategy.. big rice provinces on rice.. big gold on gold action..don't worry so much about troops until later ( we had a very civil game with relatively little attacking during the first 2/3of the game.. EXCEPT FOR ANA MARIA !!!) -- and whaddya know I am only 4 points out of first-- with a final attack castle swing that if it had fallen in my favor could have made me only one point from the win !!!

Needless to say .. such a splendid start led to usual Kel destruction in the rest of the day's gaming agenda.

RESULTS : Ed 38 David 50 J 36 Ana-Maria 42 Kel 46

( NOTE: MY only gripe is the components. What a vomitously ugly color scheme I had trouble discerning quick, teeny tiny cards with " helpful" icons the size of neutrons, add trying to figure out Japanese geography and pulling up your cubes to read the wording-- and I don't think I have ever played a game I adored so much that I so hated the BITS of- so much so I just as of this minute made an offer for an in shrink copy of Wallenstein.. )

How thrilled I was to have David teach my copy-- the first game I ever KS-ed to a level that one of the V money coins has my nickname and my business on it !!

This game is a real hoot, the chicken theme is hilarious.. and among " new, hit" negotiation games, I think I love this even a smidgen more than Article 27 !!

I also learned just how sneakily smart Juan can be.

So I am coasting a long, bribing the hell out of people, I have the least amount of dead chickens.. I have a long term plan.. I am like.. Hey, I might do well at this. Juan has 3 chickens die very quickly, he participates in NO bribing giving or getting.. and then he gets a bit quiet-- just staying out of the fray.

He then gets 2 chickens in the tax office - I was one of the guards who made sure those chickens died-- and then HUH? WHAT???? WTF??? I tell David who was running the game for us and teaching us ( very expertly as usual) -- and. I say " Juan's dead.. all his chickens are dead.."

Idiot me is planning if you just stay alive the longest then all my plans will work. But Juan gets ALL this money, kills his last two chickens seemingly on purpose -- ad then he destroys us all !! Never having been Caesar and dying first.. he royally kicks our fannies.

What a splendid design, can't wait to play again !!

Our final game with Ed and David was this classic, which I had not played f2f in 31 years !!!! I only had played online ... and boy howdy did it show. I was third in SEVEN mergers-- I never tried to sweep up stock in the two companies I saw were totally going to be the final two mongo safe companies, I totally could not have played this worse. ( Harking back to my Cleopatra disaster last week, perhaps pointing out that David is now the CleopatraMeaniehead is why he destroyed me here as well as taking my money but still killing one of my chickens in the previous game!!) AM had a good rally, but Ed who had been having a disastrous game , made a spectacular end run of fine merger positions, giving him a very respectable second and only a few thousand off David's win.

Results :

Ed 37500 David 41300 AM 31700 J 30400 Kel 12700 ( at least I broke 10k... I was doing so horrid was afraid I wouldn't even do that !!)

Ed and David take their leave, and me and the hosts decide to play three more quick games. And of course we start with our new hit and my new " cause" that prompted my first BGG review ever !!

My very miniscule concerns that this game might lose a bit of it's thrill with 3 instead of the full compliment of 4 were happily unfounded.

This time instead of her husband, Ana Maria was the mindreader--- sweeping the floor with us. And also once again I had a round were I lost SEVEN prizes in a row by 10 dollars. !! \ There were very few ties in this game and when they did happen .. they usually went to Juan. ( did get one exciting 70$ watch for $40 in the last round.) I still adore this game and it's always going to be one of my causes now--- but I bit it big time. Soon to try again I hope !!

RESULTS :

K 190 330 250 --- 760
J 300 390 520 -- 1210
AM 710 ( !!!) 480 430 --- 1620 !!!

Next J and AM were very into wanting to try my by-then-still-unplayed copy of this little German dexterity ditty-- and I totally expected to just bomb. I was a bit tired and I am RENOWN for being a terribly inefficient user of space. ( Kel, we can et 40 more things in that bag if you will move hem around correctly. Kel , 20 more items will go the back of the truck if you load them in a different order, dumbass... you get the picture.)

So while I had no hope of winning, I was glad I made any sort of showing AT ALL
Sebastian joined us for this and did quire respectably. Ana-Maria said she was doing poorly due to dyslexia and her husband said " No, it's goofiness" prompting me to think in bad situations one could apologize for a poor showing in any situation and say " I am sorry, I have dyslexia and goofiness". A neat little game especially since I am not, to reiterate, the most adept person at dexterity thingies.

But Juan gets tons of bonus plays and successfully completes them. and rolls many 3s and wipes the floor with us

RESULTS : S 26 J 41 ( !!! ) K and AM tied at 21

Our final game of the evening was another of my adored " little" R. Knizia games. And finally I made a decent showing. When I first got this to the table through the July 4th holiday with my friend Ron and others-- I did quite decently. Then when I introduced this game recently to Juan and Ana-Maria ( who love it !!) -- It was like I totally had FORGOTTEN how to play and I did dreadfully.

This time we all kept in VERY close contention in the first rounds. But in a plan to drive up Green at the end, having a ton of green and only one blue and one yellow-- I totally miscalculated than anyone ELSE had any green to speak of. Hence my plan only semi-worked-- I got to 2nd but Ana-Maria had a lot of green as well, and by virtue of my plan and Juan's dreadful third round-- AM takes the game !!

RESULTS :

S 11 21 12 7 -- 52 ( this game is hard to sort of plan on first play.. I bet Seb might wipe the floor with us next time)

K 21 21 23 17 -- 82

J 20 24 11 24 -- 79
AM 20 22 21 28 -- 91 ( !!!)
