What Was I Thinking 2--10 "New Games" at the Bottom

About this time a year ago I put together a little list of 10 new-to-me games that were sort of off the radar and lowly rated games:
what-was-i-thinking.

Of those 10 games, 1 is still to be unplayed (A Mighty Fortress) mostly because I cannot convince my wife to play it and since we've moved I can't bring myself to invite anyone to try it having never played it myself.

Otherwise, all but Feudo were received well enough to keep them for now. I'm still trying to get Feudo to the table a couple more times though as I rather liked it.

So I thought it would be interesting a year later to see what newer games were in those nether lands of ratings again. What I have learned now in my 3rd year or so of re-entering the gaming world is that a rating can mean nothing if you like a game, but I also have begun to get a sense both of what I really like, and what my wife will play. These things do make for discernment and I feel slightly more informed when adding a lower-rated game to help be my "shipping" freebie.

So, here are 10 from the past year that are listed based on lowest to highest ranking this time as of today.

Can a game that is plastered everywhere in 3 of our LGSs really be that bad? Well, technically we got this as a gift and it remains unopened but for a reason. Last fall, a couple of our friends bought this as a gift for themselves, being bunny lovers. Reasoning was odd, but we played it a couple of times. It was fun but of course a bit frustrating since you do not know if you've won until the bitter end. It had a few interesting aspects that made the game interesting as well. Because it was a gift, it will stay in the collection and I give our relative bonus points for picking up something a bit more interesting than past efforts to engage our game interests. And now that our friends have moved away, we have a copy to use if the need ever...ever arises.

This is a nice little tile placement game for 2 players. The artwork is beautiful and it is not a bad game. It was on a clearance list and got added to my order. Basically, we play a lot of CARCASSONNE and its many standalone variants. I thought this would make a nice change of pace and also give us something that could be added to our vacation bag, or coffee house game choices.

It is a rather good little game.

I kickstarted this game and suspect this will eventually climb out of the lower thousands here on BGG. Having thoroughly enjoyed Academy's 1812 game, I had a feeling this one would be an interesting shift and a great addition to our co-op games in our collection. It is still on the way--due this month supposedly and I suspect once the GENCON and ESSEN conventioneers start playing and ranking this game it will find a place alongside 1812.

I picked this up at a local convention discount table. We had played LIVINSTONE (which interestingly made last year's list) and enjoyed it plus this is by Knizia whose games we've mostly enjoyed.

It has a sort of THROUGH THE DESERT feel at times but we liked the theme a little and will likely pull this one out from time to time. It got side-lined by some newer games shortly after the convention.

Having learned that we tend to like certain game designers, I decided it might be worth checking this Jurgen-Wrede game out and when it was offered at more than half off, I bit and added it to a large order. Love the components and have read the rules through. It just has not made it to the table--we got close to playing it in August so I am hoping it will get played soon.

This was the first game I Kickstarted. I was intrigued by the theme and the 2 bonus games (LANCASTER and ATON) also made this a sweeter deal. Ironically, the bonus games get played a lot more. This got a single play during Christmas season and currently is sitting next to the game table to play a couple more times. I think we will eventually get into this.

My wife hates this game and its original version which I will put together here. I picked them up at a LGS we frequent out East on vacation.

However, we have young people who request this now.

Miniature Market had a $6.99 sale for a bunch of games of varying interest. This certainly looked interesting and after a couple plays I think this is a pretty good game if you have 4 players because it gets at the aspect that lets you shoot at other boats. With 2 it does not work quite as well.

I picked this up as a nice familiar game to introduce as an alternate to family card games. It has a great easy-to-learn game play and has a nice take-that style sometimes.

Another of the discounted MM games. Still have yet to play it, but love the components and it looks like fun game.
