Welcome to my 50th GMT P500 list!

In honour of the occasion, I am making a few changes.

First, I thought it would be fun to feature one of the games currently on the reprint list. This month I've chosen Conquest of Paradise.

Second, I've ordered the list by publisher. What that means is that all of the GMT produced products are first, and then towards the end, we have the games distributed by GMT on behalf of UGG and Consim Press in their own sections.

Third, I'm going to take a break more often. I love making this list. It's a ton of fun for me. But there are months where there's no news or it's very quiet. So I'll be revisiting the past lists to see where the lulls are and cutting back to 10 lists a year. My gut feeling is that this means there'll be one less in the summer and that the December list will merged with the November list, or maybe I'll shift I'll shift the November list to mid-November just after the fall sale when there's usually a nice spike in pre-order numbers.

Fourth, I've reformatted each game entry. I'm being quite a bit leaner on the copy-paste text from the GMT site to make the look of each entry cleaner.

I suspect what most people want to see is how the numbers are moving, what's new, and what's it going to cost, and know how to click a link to the GMT site (and how to get to CSW for all that).

I hope you folks like the new look!

Both CC:Europe and CC:Mediterranean in December.
Dominant Species in December (this one is not currently out of stock, but our quantities are very low and sales continue to be excellent, so we're going to need more.)

Reprint feature of the month

Conquest of Paradise, originally released in 2007, is a game that has taken a long time to make its presence felt. Right when it finally did seem to gain traction in the wider gaming community, the original print run sold out - the fact you could get it from GMT on sale for $25 even before the fall sale discount certainly helped in that regard.

Now it's on the reprint list and will get not only a component upgrade, but also include the expansion that were issued in C3i.

Kevin McPartland posted this on Consimworld:

Conquest of Paradise Reprint

Fixes:

1. Make changes to Rules and Designer Notes from the Living Rules. Also, make changes generated by items 8 and 9 below.

2. Change “Open Ocean” markers to match ocean hex color (not ocean box color).

3. Change background color for tan, yellow and green pieces for better contrast with other colors.

4. Provide better contrast for symbols on backs of tan, yellow and white pieces.

5. Fix three misspellings on map: Kiritimati, Rarotonga and Kermadec.

Improvements:

6. Provide mounted map.

7. Provide full-color rules and Player Charts (per the living rules posted at the GMT web site).

8. Provide 10mm wood cubes for villages (50 of them!).

9. Provide 27 Random Event cards; re-do graphics as required (especially card backs, where “C3i Magazine” is now a featured element).

10. Provide one additional Arts & Culture (“Lapita Pottery”) card to fill out a full 55-card deck.

11. Change fourteen 1/2” counters from Villages (no longer needed) to special markers to go with the Random Event markers. Create new artwork for markers: fourteen different graphics on the front, with a reference to the appropriate card number on the back.

12. Change twenty 1/2" counters from Villages to Control markers- new artwork (or a combination of the Village and Discovered Markers art) needed.

13. Fourteen remaining Villages to have Improved Agriculture on both sides (not just the back, as now).

To quote my own review: What we really have here is a brilliant civilization building game with many of the core hallmarks of more complicated 4X games, wrapped in an attractive package absolutely soaking in well researched theme, plays in about 90-120 minutes, and plays equally well with 2, 3, or 4 players.

You owe it to yourself to check it out. And at the preorder price of only $39, it's a bargain.

You can toss it into your cart at the GMT site here: http://www.gmtgames.com/p-443-conquest-of-paradise-reprint-e...

Current Preorders: 146 (-2) P500 since April 2012

Preorder Price (List Price): $33 ($49)

Designer: Jeff Horger

Details: For 2-7 players

Title Chase Basketball is a fast-paced game nominally about professional basketball. The game focuses on team building, getting into the playoffs and winning it all. Title Chase Basketball should not be confused with a simulation. It is a game meant to pit players against each other and as such can be completed from the start of the season to game seven of the finals in about an hour.

Comments: It seems unfortunate to me that sports games tend to not get a lot of love. The cynic in me says that if you made this about alien races playing zero-G ball it would skyrocket.

Current Preorders: 190 (+103) P500 since September 2013

Preorder Price (List Price): $40 ($60)

Designer: Individual Games designed by Alan Emrich, Lance McMillan, and Kim Meints

Details: For 2 players

Rising Glory is the fourth game we are producing as part of our strategic friendship/partnership with Victory Point Games, and the 2nd from their Napoleonic 20 series (Fading Glory was our first). The idea for this and future volumes is that we will take multiple existing games from the VPG Napeoleonic 20 series, add an as-yet-unpublished game to the mix, and create a GMT boxed game with 3-4 games in the box, using larger (3/4") counters and mounted maps.

Game link: http://www.gmtgames.com/p-459-rising-glory.aspx

Comments: Lovely quick and nuanced games are the hallmarks of the Napoleonic 20 system, and this quad promises to be as good as Fading Glory.

Current Preorders: 299 (+46) P500 since August 2013

Preorder Price (List Price): $16 ($25)

Designer: Terry Simo & Steve Paul

Details: For 1-2 players.

The Eagle of Lille expansion to Bloody April (Air War over Arras France 1917) expands the air war to follow the career of Immelmann and some of the other early aces such as Oswald Boelcke and Lanoe Hawker. Seven new scenarios cover the period from August 1915 to early 1917 while including tables which randomize taskings and add replayability to the scenarios.

Game Link: http://www.gmtgames.com/p-454-eagle-of-lille.aspx

Comments: I'm not entirely sure what draws me so strongly to WWI air games. Perhaps it's because I like tactical games, and dogfighting in the air is essentially a tactical game. I think it's also because this was the dawn of air combat, and there was still a lot of puzzling out how things would work, and I like games where things were still being tinkered with. Ace of Aces still holds a spot of honour on my shelf.

Preorder Price (List Price): $45 ($69)

Details: For 2 players.

Fury, GMT’s new game of fantasy warfare, brings the Manoeuvre game system to the lands of the West. Knights and Orcs fight against Dragons and Dwarves to decide the outcome of the 2nd War of the West. Fury takes the bones of Manoeuvre and builds a game that has more of everything you like in the original. More and varied types of movement such as flight and teleportation, more combats in a turn each with their own deadly styles, and devastating spells that can turn the tides of war in your favor. Your ability to control the Fury of the battlefield will determine your fate.

Game Link: http://www.gmtgames.com/p-370-fury.aspx

Comments: This is one of those games that I just feel will do very well once it gets printed, but the core GMT P500 constituency isn't biting. Maybe an angel investor will step in like happened for Leaping Lemmings. One can hope!

Comments: If there's justice in the P500 world, everyone who bought the original would step up and order the expansion so we could get this one to print.

Current Preorders: 405 (+18) P500 since September 2012

Preorder Price (List Price): $69 ($99)

Designer: Craig Besinque

Details: For 3 players (but also playable by 2)

Triumph and Tragedy is a geopolitical strategy game for 3 players (also playable by 2) covering the competition for European supremacy during the period 1935-45 between Capitalism (the West), Communism (the Soviet Union) and Fascism (the Axis). It has diplomatic, economic, technological and military components, and can be won by gaining economic hegemony or technological supremacy (A-bomb), or by vanquishing a rival militarily.

Comments: I'm happy that GMT is publishing this, but if I may be allowed a tangent, this is precisely the kind of block game I'd love to see Columbia start publishing again. They had enormous success with EastFront and Rommel in the Desert, also by Mr. Besinque.

Current Preorders: 426 (+31) P500 since November 2012

Preorder Price (List Price): $48 ($69)

Designer: Richard Berg

Details For 2-5 players.

Genesis is a campaign-level game covering the turbulent Late Bronze Age in the Middle East, where kingdoms rose and fell while establishing many of the systems and ways of life that underwrite Western Civilization. Much like its ancestor game, Pax Romana, Genesis is a game that provides the players with the historical dramatis personae and allows them to forge their own empires. It also has a great emphasis on the control of the important trade routes and commercial centers and the building of the spectacular monuments these civilizations left for posterity and wonder.

Details: For 2-7 players.

Thunder Alley is a stock car racing game for 2-7 players with the feel and flexibility of a card-driven simulation. Players controls not one car, but a team of 3-6 cars. Each race is not only a run for the checkered flag but an effort to maximize the score for every car on your team. Winning is important but if you race one car to the finish line, your team might end up outside of the winner’s circle looking in.

Details: For 2 players.

At the turn of the 18th Century, Tsar Peter Veliky ("the Great") had a dream. This was for Imperial Russia to have a fleet vast and powerful enough to control its local waterways and to extend Russian trade to the world. Peter travelled widely throughout Europe, learning the trade of ship building from the western masters, and brought this knowledge home. Sadly, he would never see the result of his labors. But, by the time of his death in 1725, the seed of a powerful armada had been sown. Under a flag bearing the cross of Saint Andrew (a blue cross on a white background), the Imperial Russian Navy grew to become the masters of the Baltic, Black and eastern Mediterranean seas.

Details: For 1-2 players.

Blood & Roses focuses on the battles of the Wars of the Roses in England, between 1455 and 1487. This was warfare in which most men were truly "of iron", heavily and totally armored to such a point that their mobility was suspect. It was also the introduction of gunpowder – mostly field artillery – in noticeable numbers. And while many English men-at-arms were mounted, they did so almost entirely for transport. Most fighting was on foot … and it was quite vicious.

Game Link: http://www.gmtgames.com/p-425-blood-roses.aspx

Comments: The Men of Iron system is a victim of the so many games so little time syndrome in my house. But it's a good system and worth getting to the table.

Preorder Price (List Price): $55 ($79)

Designer: Gene Billingsley, Rodger B. MacGowan, Dan Verssen

Details: For 2 players.

Wild Blue Yonder will be a true deluxe Down in Flames product. It will contain 16-20 full campaigns, nearly 300 aircraft cards, plus all of the necessary targets, resource sheets etc. needed for play. All of this will be packaged in a large box similar to the ones for the Combat Commander games.

Game Link: http://gmtgames.com/p-297-wild-blue-yonder.aspx

Comments: I believe only Won by the Sword has been on the P500 longer than this one. I've been patiently waiting for it since I missed out on the originals, but at the same time, my interests and attention are being drawn to shiny new other games and so my desire for this one is waning. I suspect I'm not the only one who feels this way, but that feeling will probably dissipate as soon as I tear off the shrink wrap.
