Call it buyer's remorse. Call it WTF. Call it clever promotion. Heck, call your fellow BGGers insane.

If you've been in this hobby long enough and have a habit of buying games, you have likely found yourself let down at some point. Usually they are games that are purchased unseen, impulsively, on faith, or under the influence. Perhaps the game was from a designer or publisher you trust or sat at the top the hotness for six months.

Whatever the rationale, you paid your money, tore the shrink, opened the box and then it all went so very, very wrong.

I've started a Geeklist to capture those stories. This is not meant to insult any game designer. Heck, I expect for many people their biggest disappointment will have come from games at the very top of the rankings that simply didn't meet their expectations. This is purely based on personal opinion.

So let's hear your tale of regret--what game has let you down the most and why?

I wanted to love Agricola. Everything spoke for the game, euro, WP, Uwe Rosenberg, nice components, everybody else seemed to loooove it.

And it is just boring. It is among the most boring games I ever played. It feels like work and to be honest, on my sparetime I want to enjoy myself, not work in a boring, stupid farm.

Sold it quickly.

This is a lot of things that are bad about Ameritrash. You wander around the house and stuff happens to you until the haunting begans. The mechanism for selecting the haunting (Omen + the room) means that it is really random in a very bad way. It's possible for the traitor to start off completely ganked, near death and not do anything. It's possible for the heroes to be the same. There's no game balance whatsoever so you get games that are incredibly lopsided.
People tried to sell me on this game because, according to them, "it's like Arkham." No.

I hold a minority opinion here, but I don't care for this game. Even with a good group of friends who know each other well, the game reduces its players to paranoiac, spiteful pessimists. There's just no fun in having to lie to everyone around you, and to assume they're lying to you. Too many negative vibes, man!

I acquired a ton of ATS in a big trade. I love tactical games and I had high hopes. Well, the rules have wandered all over the place, it tries too hard NOT to be ASL, and (most importantly) the activation system is just tedious. I'll probably try it again, perhaps just as a solo exercise.

(Note to fanboys: please don't tell me how I am so wrong; this is MY opinion not yours.)

I was a huge fan of 3R and looked forward to A3R. But A3R was a disappointment. Finally sold it a few years ago.

I love wine, but sometimes you find a bottle that despite it's age turns to vinegar. This was a game I really wanted to like - theme (check), heavy euro (check), beautiful board (check), highly recommended on BGG (top 100 strategy game - check)... I think someone forgot to put the game in the box?

3+ hours of game time (not including the 30 minutes of explaining the rules to the group)+ setup + printing out player aids; and only a total of 12 actions (not including bonus tiles) in the game makes me wonder - what were they thinking (~ 1 action every 17 minutes...zzzzzzz?

I'm sure there's a game in there somewhere, but it's not for me, nor any of the people I played with (who are all experienced gamers who enjoy euros)

We have the North American version with unpainted pieces. Wife picked it up ata garage sale, so we're not heavily invested or anything. It did look kind of clever, with all the different shapes.

Play was lackluster to say the least. It quickly became obvious which piece would be auctioned next, and which person would want it or be forced to take it. With four or five plyers, we could get all the pieces in play and no one knock over their tower, which basically froze the game. For elementary-aged children it could be fun, but I simply found it boring.

I can not say that this game is bad, I didn't give it enough time to be able to legitimate a judgement.

I didn't read much before I came to the conclusion that this could be thee game for me. I'm a professional poker player who loves heads up play -- no game can be as intense and lovely. Preorded it, bought all the expansions I could get my hands on and waited for the delivery.

Played it once. Played it twice. Played it a third time. Went to bed. First thing in the morning I put it up for sale. Darn was I disappointed.

All 3 games were horrible. First one I won after 15 minutes with a "Oh, well, I guess that's it? Um, did we miss anything?".
Second basically the same thing. Third game on the other hand took well over an hour and I was bored out of my skull.

The decisions felt annoying. "Ok, let's make a run here. I risk taking a ton of damage just to be awarded by a trap that I had no way of telling it was there". The luck is just all over the place. And again, I understand that the skill level increases a lot as your understanding develops but my first experience was just so horrible I couldn't stand playing it one more time.

I fell in love with the minis, assured I would paint them all and use them for D&D too. Positive that the game would be great, like some sort of Talisman that focused on thieves stealing and looting a city.

All the characters are almost the same.
The money chips are annoying in the hands.
Unpainted the miniatures are hard to tell the difference.
The deck of 64 or so cards only has about 4 different types of cards.
The 16 different scenarios are not that cool.

Dang, the game just kinda sucks with nothing really fun. In about three games there was only about one entire minute of possible joy, but way more annoyance.
The action tokens slide all over the place.
The minis were still cool, but at that point I became bitter and wanted nothing further to do with this game.

Tried to trade it.
Tried to trade it.
Tried to trade it.
Tried to trade it.

Finally since no one else wanted it either, I just left it out front with a free sign near Christmas. Some guy saw it and the other game I left out there and he seemed really stoked, so at least it kinda had a happy ending.

I'm a Baby Boomer, born not long after WWII. My two regular gaming partners were born before or during the war. I figured they'd be interested in the historical aspect of this game. I showed it to one of the two people. She said she's not at all interested in war games. I haven't carried it cross country yet to show it to the other gamer, nor have I asked him whether he thinks he'd like it. It's now sitting on the bottom shelf of my games bookcase.

I wonder if I'd like it . . . if I could find someone with whom to play it.

(Not to be confused with Sixth Fleet.)

I was eagerly looking forward to SPI's treatment of modern naval warfare. Then it arrived. The map was okay. The counters were perhaps the nicest SPI had done to date; they were certainly the most colorful. But the rules . . . . Are they kidding? They can't be serious! Check the designer's notes. Yes, they are serious.

The designer really believed that they way to fight a modern naval war in the Med is to line up your ships across the entire breadth of the sea in order to prevent the enemy from getting behind you and cutting off your retreat. Because, obviously, any captain faced with an enemy ship will run away, unless his retreat is cut off and he is forced to stay and be sunk.

That is not how navies fight. Any captain who ran away like that would probably face a court-martial, and might well share the fate of Admiral Byng.

I think I played this once, just to see if it was really as silly as the rules implied. It was. I took it out a few months ago to see if perhaps I had misjudged it in my youth, but it had not improved with age.

This is mine, although it could be any edition of this game; it began disappointing me in the '80s.

An adventure game, fantasy, individual characters -- all kinds of coolness. How could I not love it? All that THEME!!!

And yet ... it bores the crap out of me. Roll and move, left or right. in or out ... Oh look, I'm a toad -- again.

I love Arkham Horror. And Tales of the Arabian Nights, where your choices may not be meaningless, but the meaning is totally hidden from view, so you might as well close your eyes and stick a pin in your list of options. But at least I feel like I'm part of an ongoing story, and a thrilling one at that.

Talisman just makes me feel like I'm shuffling around waiting for something to land in my lap and let me make a race for the middle to END it already! I don't know WHY it's that way. It just is.

Not even sure why we didn't enjoy this at all, not even sure I could explain it if I tried.

We played a game with 3 players and when we were done we just stared at the table and thought, what the heck did we just do for 2 hours? Then, thinking maybe we missed something and that there was something in there to make this game memorable, we tried it again, and had that same empty feeling after we were done. There was just nothing.

We enjoy games that as soon as the game is done everyone is talking about what they could have done different, what first move mistake they made, how they should have zigged instead of zagged. This had none of that, I was left to clean off the table by myself as they went and looked for a different game to cleanse our palates.

Played it twice at BGG.con. Really liked it, bought it, then realized on the 3rd play that each play feels very samey. Maybe an interesting expansion could save it because the basic mechanic is very neat and original. Alas, I don't think it got popular enough to warrant expansion.

I had similar experiences with Luna and Trajan.

Not sure if this s my biggest, but its up there. I love deckbuilding games and I'm a Sci-Fi fan. Plus there were lots of good reviews for this one. I was pretty excited to finally break it out and play. Well, it totally fell flat for me. It didn't seem like there was much of a game and just a ton of randomness that I wasn't expecting. Just did not enjoy it at all and ended up trading it away.

Instead, it's utterly terrible: mediocre movie stills surrounded by ugly, hard-to-read graphic design, complex, hard-to-remember mechanics that boil down to piling multiple types of cubes in a cup and then drawing some, pointless Clix figures which all look alike with tiny numbers on the base that make the cards look legible. We got through a few turns then gave up, throwing this thing onto the trade pile, where I've still been unable to get rid of it.

I like sushi. I like the little dishes you mix wasabi and soy sauce in. I don't like this game.
