Call it buyer's remorse. Call it WTF. Call it clever promotion. Heck, call your fellow BGGers insane.

If you've been in this hobby long enough and have a habit of buying games, you have likely found yourself let down at some point. Usually they are games that are purchased unseen, impulsively, on faith, or under the influence. Perhaps the game was from a designer or publisher you trust or sat at the top the hotness for six months.

Whatever the rationale, you paid your money, tore the shrink, opened the box and then it all went so very, very wrong.

I've started a Geeklist to capture those stories. This is not meant to insult any game designer. Heck, I expect for many people their biggest disappointment will have come from games at the very top of the rankings that simply didn't meet their expectations. This is purely based on personal opinion.

So let's hear your tale of regret--what game has let you down the most and why?

It's Deck Building, it's FF , it's fantasy sooo many things I love.

But there was little to nothing in the box. not enough Scenarios, not enough re-playability and it just left me flat. This is one of the few games I had buyers remorse within 3-4 plays. I so wanted to love it but it's just a rushed game to cash in on deck building.

So many glowing reviews but this game is flat beyond imagination. We played it twice just to make sure nothing was amiss. Nope. Just a very uninspiring design. No game has come close to such a disappointment.

I must have read the rules at least 5 times to make sure that I was playing correctly.

Felt relieved when Garrett from Garrett Games agreed with my ratings.

I LOVE train games, and this got a ton of buzz when it came out.

The last time I was in the mood to get a (non-war) game I went to the game store to browse. I saw this on the shelf and was stoked. I bought it, tore it open on the spot and read the rules. It seemed interesting enough and put it next on my "to play" list. That night some people came over and we gave it a shot.

A few cards in we all realized we weren't having any fun. Sure, it's short, and easy to play, but we weren't, having, any, fun. It fell completely flat. It's now sitting on my "for trade".

The idea sounded interesting, but the game just didn't work at all with my group. It didn't feel "challenging", it felt daunting and infuriating. Perhaps it depends on the type of table you play it on (I tried 2 or 3 types), but I just couldn't get the bounces right, and nobody else could either.

My first co-op game ever was Arkham Horror. Played once, everyone had a good time, and I traded it away for DotR. It was an okay game, but far too many redundant cards and chips. You can take out half of them and it wouldn't make a difference.

Then I liked DotR, until I tried Pandemic. I had always been looking for an ideal fantasy game (and now my hope lies in Pathfinder ACG), but the theme in this game is pasted on. I can play Pandemic with zombie miniatures in less than half of the time and have the same amount of fun. Not scaling well with the number of players, unnecessarily large game and player boards, and once every two turns you will spend 30 seconds just to find the location on the cards really hurt the game for me.

I heard from lots of folks that this game is "deck building done right", and my wife and I like other deckbuilders (like Dominion and Eminent Domain) so I broke down and bought this game on a whim. My wife and I tried playing this game a number of times, but have only managed to play one game all the way through, and the last time I pulled it out (because I felt bad that it wasn't getting any plays), it made both of us tired just to look at it, so we put it away again.

I'm sure there are lots of folks who love this game. But I guess it's not for us. Feels way too war-gamey and dry. And the aspects of deck building that annoy me (not drawing what you want, etc) seemed amplified. So, yeah... I was disappointed.

Maybe it's not a bad game, but it was sure disappointing for me.

I have a friend that owns this and he brought it over a couple of months ago. Before we played, I had read through the rules, watched a couple of videos, and was genuinely excited to play.

The first game I hated, but decided that it was because I was just learning a few things and made a few bad decisions with what cards to buy and that the 2nd game would go much better (plus, the way the cards came up for the villains, I don't think it would have mattered anyway). The second game I tried to apply what I felt I'd learned, but then he ended up recruiting all the cards I wanted on his turn, the ones revealed for me I either hated or always came up 1 point short of recruiting, and it was an even more miserable experience than the first game.

Also, if I'm being totally honest, I don't like the idea of semi-cooperative games. Rules of gamer etiquette kept me from undermining our win against the villain in the 2nd game, but I wanted to just torpedo the whole thing because he was going to triple or quadruple my point total, and I knew it.

However, even absent that element of the game, there is something excruciatingly unsatisfying about sitting there and knowing that you are doing almost nothing to contribute to the group win other than getting the lousy cards out of the way so everybody else can fight the bad guys.

Maybe I just got unlucky twice with the game, but that's more than enough for me. I've got enough games that I don't need to waste my time with something that can't give me a shred of hope that I'll enjoy it.

Beautiful game! Nice plastic pieces! Excellent board! Lots of cards!
Family friendly, with plenty of replayability!
A mix of luck and strategy!

I read all these comments about to game before a trip to Canada, so when I saw it at a FLGS, I didn't think twice. I thought I'd found the golden pot at the end of the rainbow! I came back to Chile, and showed-off my new game... until we played it.

It's short, lousy, boring and it feels like the board is playing you. We couldn't get to make choices, and we were already dead, crushed by the Stone or into the lava.

Perhaps we got some rule wrong? Maybe we skipped something? Let's give it another try after we re-read the rules!!!!

Second play... same reaction. A week later it was sold.

After reading some glowing reviews of this game, I was hooked. I ordered it and then waited for 2 months while other games in my shipment came in from their pre-orders. And then it arrived. I busted it out.. and was let down. The game plays as a mess. The semi-coop mechanic just doesn't work. I received the solo expansion for it, thinking that might solve that problem. And then one Saturday when the wife was away, I began setting up a scenario and realized, you know what? I don't care. There's too many boards and too much fiddling for a game that just isn't that good.

I base a lot of my non-wargame buys on theme first, then try and go over the rules to see if they make sense. I did that for this game: the theme seemed really excellent and unique and the rules had some great ideas in them.

After the first time playing the game it just seemed like a strange mash-ups of ideas that do not belong together. I wouldn't mind trying it again because (maybe) we're playing it "wrong"? In the end a game is a failure if you are playing according to the rules but playing it "wrong".

This seemed awesome when it showed up on the P500 list. Space exploration, huge battleships, simple rules, interstellar conquest. I was drooling.

Then I got the game, and spent the next 2 hours filling out a form rather than playing a game. I know I'm exaggerating, but it felt closer to tax season than a gaming experience.

Also, I spent about 2 hours building up a huge fleet, only to have it destroyed by a few unlucky rolls in a big combat. I saw that it would take another hour or so to rebuild enough ships to be competetive, so I threw in the towel. I rarely, if ever, quit games, but I forfeited my one and only game of this.

First thing I thought of when I saw this list. Remember when this was published? It was all the hotness, high ratings and everyone was racing to get that nice big box.

Then people got to play it. Oh dear.

It is so frustrating. It has all the Civi-type goodness you want, with resources and cities and improvements and marching armies and tech levels and very neat little sculpts (which often find their way into owners' other games). But it takes a very long time (and a table you can bowl on), can unbalance early, and just never manages to be the game you thought you were buying.

To this day, I cling to the hope that someone can come up with a good tight game using the stuff in this box. Meanwhile, this one's in my garage to make shelf space for other things.

The theme, the components, the reviews, everything was pointing to a game I would enjoy. Unfortunately, I did not. The setup time is too long for my taste. Everytime we play, we end up having to re-read all the rules and almost always have to restart with the first scenario to remember how it's played. I still think this is an excellent game, but I guess it's a game that you really have to play frequently to really get into.

For Christmas at the end of last year I asked for and got 3 games that I was interesting in:
Zombicide - I missed the kickstarter but it looked so awesome I had to get it (And it is awesome!)
Galaxy Trucker: Anniversary Edition - I've played the base game, but really wanted to try expansions, so I asked for this, great fun.
Through the Ages: - A game on civilization by the same guy as Galaxy Trucker, and it's ranked no. 3!

I played the top 2 first, and absolutely loved both. They're amazing games that I can play again and again, and in fact I just got the dispatch notification about half an hour ago for Zombicide PO & TCM.

The disappointment though, was Through the Ages. I don't really know what I was expecting, but I took it along to the Tabletop society I attend with the other games to play it. We worked out the others no problem, then one week decided to try this. What ensued was 2 and a half hours of us getting frustrated trying to work out how the game worked. When we finally thought we had it, it completely lacked any substance, any feeling of achievement when we did anything. We finished that game after someone asked if people want to continue, and the answer was a hugely resounding no, I've not seen any other game get that reaction, particularly not from myself.

I sold it on at the UK Games Expo, and I'm glad for it, because I simply can't believe how much just looking at the box made me feel sour afterwards. I even tried going through the rules and trying to work out where the fun contained was in it, no idea.

No. 3 top game? Well, I'm certainly not your average user.

As I made the sidewards leap from PnP RPGs to boardgames a friend of mine told me that he knows an awesome game, that as I like Mythos stuff, I would totally love.

This game was all about running around Arkham and fighting a Great Old one cooperatively, and best of all it played against the board so I wouldn't have to GM it

According to her this game was called Cults Across America...

I have low impulse control so I immediately ordered it from my FLGS, and a short 2 months later [apparently this was a hard to find game, we call this a clue shake] I finally got to open the box and play the game that was described to me... wait... what's this?

You can imagine the disappointment that followed. soblue
That game is still on my shelf. I think I played it once.

...and I read reviews now

I'm probably going to get flamed for this.

I don't like a glossy finish on components, I thought the rules needed editing, and I found the game play wasn't compelling at all. Eventually I traded it away.

Waaaaaayyy to long, you realize just how slow progress everyone makes in the first few rounds and then realize there is about another hour and a half of boring slog left.

Also a very obvious dominant strategy.

Ok, this one is an easy target but I actually did buy a copy of Monopoly a few years back to play with my relatives at Christmas. This was long before discovering BGG and all the great games that you can only find in real boardgame stores as apposed to shopping mall toy stores.

Every time I look at the box I am reminded of how naive I once was.

As a child, I loved the mass-market board games. One that was a particular favorite of mine was Risk. The hundreds of plastic pieces, the hours-long games, and the larger element of strategy made this game stand out among the rest. But as I got older, Risk's flaws began to wear through for me; namely player elimination, the tendency for the game to drag on forever, and the high amount of luck.

So when I heard about Small World, I was excited. Conquering territories like Risk? No player elimination? A set number of turns so you know exactly when the game will end? No more than a single die roll each turn? AND a variety of different races, each with their own unique powers? This sounded like gaming utopia to me. And then my wife got it for me for my birthday, I struggled through the rules, and a couple of introductory games with different groups, and it just fell flat every time. There was no excitement, no tension, no feeling of conquering anything. It was simply placing your cardboard tokens on a board, counting them, taking other cardboard tokens, and then watching the next player replace your cardboard tokens with theirs.

I really wanted to like this game, and I don't doubt that other people enjoy it. But it just didn't work for me.

After playing Raid on St. Nazaire I guess I had my hopes high and thinking Raid on Richmond would be like it. I found the rules were not the best and I had unanswered questions. The union cavalry units can go in buildings but what happens to the horses? It would be nice to see this game redesigned since it has a compelling premise.

This is one of the minority opinions but I did not like RSR. I was disappointed with the components, the map was a bit too dark and I thought the counters were too thin. When I purchased the game there was a tear in a couple of places on the main map there it had been foiled. I didn't understand why the German supply was different from the Axis minor allies. The way the depots worked didn't make sense to me. Why could they be moved so well on mud turns? Why were there no German replacements when the majority of other strategic east front games have them? I sold my copy this year.

I thought while I am at it, I would put the first game I was ever disappointed with. I got Battle Cry for Christmas one year and was really excited when I got it since I loved civil war history. When I found out how the combat worked, I became disappointed with Battle Cry. I gave the game away but wished now I still had it for sentimental reasons.

Men At Arms was billed as Jim Dunnigan's triumphant return to board wargaming, and I looked forward to it. It had some cool design ideas and a wide variety of scenarios spanning thousands of years. But it had enough rules problems to inspire a near-complete rewrite later, and the graphics were butt-ugly. Way too many corners were cut in producing this. Disappointing.
