The battle to be the Best Dice Game continues. Round One saw 134 games fight it out. In Round 3 20 games rolled the dice with 440 users voting.

I'm a big fan of dice in games. They add drama. They often add too much luck, but modern design has meant that it isn't a simple matter of whoever-rolls-the-most-6s-wins. A lot of great dice games have been published in the last few years and there have been a slew of awesome PnP dice games too.

This contest is about Dice games, rather than just games with Dice in them. In BGG terminology it is Dice as a Category rather than Dice as a Mechanic. These are games where Dice make up the core part of the game. It has been suggested that the difference is the level of choice there is about how to use the dice.

Round one and the nominations and discussion thread saw some discussion about what were and weren't Dice Games. There were some polls to determine whether some of them should be in the contest or not, where if it wasn't a clear result then they were allowed in.

The voting process is simple. Rate as a Dice game all the games you have played and then upgrade a single game in each bracket from "Awesome" to "Best". If you don't have an "Awesome" in the bracket you won't have a "Best".
The average rating for each game will determine a shortlist for the next round, will a threshold on the minimum number of votes required to progress.

So what happened in the last round? The main measure used for qualification for this round was Average Rating. To calculate this points were awarded for each rating: Best (4), Awesome (3), Great (2), Good (1), Okay (0), Bad (-1), Not a Dice game (-1). I don't publish the results of the average ratings to retain some mystery to the contest.

Just missing the cut for the Top 10 based on average rating were:

Yspahan
Las Vegas
Seasons
Dice Town
Formula D

Top 10 by Most 'Best' Votes:

1 King of Tokyo
2 The Castles of Burgundy
3 Can't Stop
4 Alien Frontiers
5 Stone Age
6 Kingsburg
7 Troyes
8 Liar's Dice (Perudo)
9 Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age
10 Escape: The Curse of the Temple

This list is a straight count of the games getting the most 'Best' ratings in the last round. These are an exact match with the best by Average Top 10, though a different order, so all of these make the cut for this round.

Top Ten Most 'Bad' Votes in the Top 20

1 King of Tokyo
2 Escape: The Curse of the Temple
3 Liar's Dice (Perudo)
4 Kingsburg
5 Stone Age
6 Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age
7 Seasons
8 Dice Town
9 Ra: The Dice Game
10 Formula D

This list is a straight count of the shows getting the most 'Bad' ratings in the last round.
There is obviously a lack of consensus here as six of these make the cut for the Top 10!: King of Tokyo, Liar's Dice, Kingsburg, Escape Stone Age and Roll Through the Ages.

Top 10 Most 'Not a Dice Game' Votes in the Top 60

1 Stone Age
2 Seasons
3 Troyes
4 The Castles of Burgundy
5 Alien Frontiers
6 Manila
7 Lords of Vegas
8 Formula D
9 Yspahan
10 Kingsburg

Despite these negative votes five of this list made the cut for the Top 10: Stone Age, Troyes, Castles of Burgundy, Alien Frontiers and Kingsburg.

Top 10 Most Rated (aka Most Well Known)

1 King of Tokyo
2 Stone Age
3 Kingsburg
4 Formula D
5 Can't Stop
6 Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age
7 Liar's Dice (Perudo)
8 Alien Frontiers
9 The Castles of Burgundy
10 Troyes

Formula D is the only games on this list that don't make the cut for the Top 10.
Escape is the least well known game to make the Top 10, followed by Troyes and Castles of Burgundy.

A quick note on how the brackets work. Firstly the games have been allocated to the brackets based on their performance in the last round to equalise the brackets.

Also I won't be limiting the number of games that can come through from any one bracket, so a bracket that has loads of great games will not be greatly penalised. I will look at the average scores across all the games to determine the cut for the next round.

The game selected for each geeklist item is the least well known game in the bracket.

Here we go!
