There was some miserable looking wintery weather outdoors, but we stayed dry indoors to learn and play some games. Add what you played and see what else was played.

Tim and I taught Mark this game of surprising strategy and tactics. Set at and during the famed eruption of Vesuvius, the first half of the game sees players place their residents in Pompeii, while as lava flows in the second half, the player who saves the most residents wins. One of the nice visual features of this game is the (abstracted) three-dimensional Vesuvius volcano in the game, into which dead and to-be-dead residents are thrown into. Tim and I got into the ‘throwing-our-opponents-residents-into-Vesuvius’ more than Mark did.

Mark’s complaints that Tim was clearly going to win as many of his people successfully fled Pompeii were made even more amusing as the lava flow saw three of his residents killed in one turn (it was too tempting to take three people out on one turn). It also turned out that Mark was incorrect in his final assessment, as I managed to win a very close game 13 to Tim’s 12 and Mark’s 12 (with Tim and me each having 5 people in Vesuvius and Mark having 10, meaning that Tim came second and Mark third).

I taught this fantastic tile laying game to Jacob, Amy & Tim - Tegan and I had already played a bunch of times.

You have a selection of tiles on a track that you move around to pick up the one you want. Whoever is at the back of the line is next, so the further you jump ahead, the longer you will likely wait for another turn.

There also rules about placement, and resources to collect/spend.

A fantastic little game!

Even though Jacob won.

Then the same group played this older game where you are betting on the order convicts will escape from jail. It almost feels like a horse racing game really, though you can move them backwards.

It's quick, especially if you play with a variant that can cause the backwards dice not to work.

Amy won this one.

Next up I taught/reminded the group Keyflower (With the Keyflower: Key Celeste mini expansion). I Amy and Tegan were the only new players, though the rest of us had only played once or twice.

A fantastic mix of bidding, tile laying and worker placement game.

The mini expansion (available in the BGG store) adds a really fun twist - Who ever wins the ghost ship gets a ghost meeple. At any time int hat round they can use it to scare away the meeples someone bid on one of the tiles. The person still wins the tile, but the ghost scare all of the meeples to the owners collection (So it can really pay to bid someone right up and take a whole bunch of meeples at the end of the round)

It also 'locks' that tile so that no one can play there.

Really fun!

And I had my first win.

Ian arrived, and Jacob disappeared, so Ian taught Manhattan Project. A worker placement game about building bombs.

I really liked it, though found that I had invested in the wrong type of energy for the cards that came out. Though it was very close all round - I think everyone was almost ready to build their game winning bomb when Tim managed to get his down first.

Definitely keen to play again.

Finally, when we had all gotten a little silly and a little board-game-drunk, we finished with this really silly, chaotic game. Like a really random Settlers of Catan.

I managed to win pretty convincingly by ignoring most resources and sleeping with the king a lot.

Not a game for every meet, but I have really had a blast with the couple of plays I've had so far. Might have to pick up the expansion if I can track it down.

Greg and I played a quick couple of back to back games of this, with one win each.

Second game was Ticinus (sp?) river which I don't think we had tried before but lots of cavalry action and quite interesting, despite my going down in defeat one banner to six...

Greg, time for you to ramp up another C & C tournament for the good of all methinks.

Played Love Letter for 15ish mins with Jocelyn, Priya and Wes.

Priya, Jocelyn and Myself had played before - Wes was learning.

We had a little discussion about whether or not a game such as this should have a scoring method at all or whether it should just be played for the fun. When we "called" the game I believe Jocelyn had gotten the most letters through. I'm pretty sure she used gold-leaf ink embellished with flourishes and intricate curlicues to garner such lascivious attention from the princess.

Had a five player game of Sentinels of the Multiverse (thank you to Jeremy for bringing his deluxe set!).

Players: Jeremy, Priya, Jocelyn, Wes and Myself (David).

We were squaring off against a villain that harnessed the power of the sun. Citizens of the Sun I think? We had smashed her down from 80 health down to around 20 when we had to end the game (Jeremy had a rugby match to attend).

With three new players (Myself, Priya and Wes) it was hard to gauge exactly how to act, though I think we were getting more of the hang of it towards the end. There's certainly a large amount of variability between the different Heroes' play styles.

Thanks for teaching, Jeremy! meeple

Played two games of Forbidden Island on Elite Difficulty.

Players: Jocelyn, Priya, Wes and Myself (David).

Wes was a new player, and Priya/Jocelyn had played once before, I am an experienced player.

We were doing quite well on our first game, despite having all three waters rise cards coming up in the first few turns. We had two treasures and were ready to cap the last two and hightail it home when an unfortunately timed waters rise meant that fools landing was lost. We would have won in our next cycle of rounds!

The second game was a disaster. It looked promising at the start but it seemed that Poseidon shook his fist at us and conjured up mighty seas to swallow our unfortunate island.

Good times, good games - did the best we could!

I played in two games of 7 Wonders, both with the Cities expansion (7 Wonders: Cities), and I think some, if not all, of the extra wonders possible to be randomly dealt to players.

In the first game, it was refreshing for no one needing to be taught the game and everyone able to play the game with some depth and greater strategy. This close six player game ended up with Gracie winning on 66, over Mark on 52, Tim 61, myself 61, Tyrone 59 and Andrew 59.

In the second game later in the day, I think only Oliver needed to relearn the game. That game was not that close, with Mark winning on 76 over Jason 65, myself 57, Oliver 54 and Richard 54.

In the end Ernest told such a convincing tale on behalf of Spring that the Writer and the Winter factions all refused to play any more cards, their cold and stony hearts had been won over so Spring was victorious!
