I'll apologize right off the bat if you came here looking for a geeklist about musical theatre. This isn't "Which Game Best Personifies My Favorite Glee Character", although I'm not staking any claim to that theme, so if you want to run with it, it's yours.
No instead, this is a list with songs that accurately describe the experience of a particular game. Not just a song and game that share a theme, but if you were to write a song in the middle of a game, what would it sound like? Still confused? How about this; if Julie Andrews were playing Terra Mystica, what would she break out singing?
Huh. Maybe this is a list about musical theatre. I did not see that coming when I started writing this.
I always start this game with such high hopes, and plans for everything I'm going to do. But then I get so busy with trying to put food on the table, I get to the end, and haven't accomplished much of what I thought I would.
Bon Jovi - Livin' On a Prayer
There are quite a few Bon Jovi songs that would fit this. For a band full of millionaires, they seem to be able to write great songs about barely getting by.
I had just gotten this game and on the second or third play, my wife decided to go for as many science cards as she could. I don't remember the final score, but I'm sure she beat me by a good 30 points.
Thomas Dolby - She Blinded Me With Science
I won't include a video because a cursory look through youtube didn't turn up the official one, and frankly, I hate the song. But it seems to fit perfectly. Well, almost perfectly. If it were called She Bludgeoned Me With Science, it would be completely perfect.
These days it's good to be a geek. We've got a hundred different Cons that allow us to meet the objects of our nerd reverence while wearing Halloween costumes, and even Hollywood is pandering to us every chance it gets. But it didn't used to be this way. Time was, if your classmates found you reading comic books or any sort of spec fiction, you were pretty much guaranteed some quality time in a locker. And God help you if you got caught with a D&D manuel. It's hard to find a clearer sign of geekiness than playing Dungeons and Dragons.
Weezer - Buddy Holly
Weezer came onto the scene in the mid-nineties with Buddy Holly, and refused to apologize for their geekness. "I don't care what they say about us anyway."
The game that's been teaching kids that greed pays off for over 75 years.
Queen - I Want It All
Enjoy this video of Freddy Mercury doing his best impression of a high school Calculus teacher.
Hinder - Lips of an Angel
A song about pining for someone while in a relationship with someone else. Or, as the rest of us call it, cheating.
Fits with this entry, because in three quarters of a century, there's yet to be a game of Monopoly in which someone doesn't cheat. Remember your cousin Joey who always wanted to be the banker, because he was "really good at math"? Yeah, Joey, we all know what you were doing.
