David Bolt was not a prolific designer. His games met moderate success in the 1980's to 1990's. Opinions and ratings vary depending on how people feel about complex games. His games are heavy deep thinkers and seem to elicit a love/hate reaction.

Most can still be found, but are not cheap, which would indicate a core following still exists.

Bolt's operational game on the Tannenberg campaign. Complex but well received by gamers who don't mind the detailed rules. Published by People's War Games. Served as a basis for 1914:Twilight in the East, but with significant changes.

Bolt's 2nd game was also for People's War Games, but he moved to WW II. Little to no information about this one on BGG. What there is seems to indicate substantial errata, including map and counter errata, which is pretty much a deal breaker for me.

Published in Wargamer 29. This one I have, but it's been a long time since it hit the table. Might give it a shot before too long. Consensus is this is a good game, but the ratings are hurt my many folks who downgraded it due to the counters. It has pollard counters, where unit strengths are on each side, and the counter is turned as hits are taken. A method Columbia perfected with their block games. However, the font is tiny. Some have created strength chits and use those. Republished later in a much more complex version. Many feel this is the preferred version to have. It appears to be a much better game than the ratings would indicate.

Co-designed this one with Jack Radey. Seven scenarios, including a campaign game. Prices vary dramatically in the Marketplace, with the original PWG version commanding a much higher price than the 2nd edition. A little surprising, as I assume the usual PGW errata was cleaned up in the 2nd edition.

One person commented the campaign game takes 35-45 hours to play.

Co-designed with Gary Helmer. Part of the "Battles of North Africa" series. Low ratings due to significant errata, an ongoing theme of Bolt's games. Only game in the series not designed by Vance von Borries.

This is a reprint of PWG's "To the Wolf's Lair", yet is rated considerably lower than the original game. Said to be a tough slog.

Monster game with 2 maps and 2000 counters. It was nominated for a Charles Roberts award for its graphics. Probably not a coincidence it was published by Clash of Arms and not PWG or 3W.

Highly rated if you enjoy complex games of this magnitude. Cost a pretty penny though if you want a copy.

Update of the LODS, Wargamer magazine game, but more complex. Some feel the Wargamer magazine version is preferred, although the ratings for this version are higher. Probably depends on your view of complex rules and the amount of dislike for the earlier counters.

An updated remake of the original, and came several years after Bolt's previous designs. His highest rated game. Opinion seems to be; if you want to game Tannenberg, go with this or if you want to simulate the first year on the eastern front go with Twilight.
