We all began our passion for board games when we played "that one" game. This list is a celebration of those games, the games that brought us to the community hidden within plain sight.

Which game was your entry point into the hobby?
What about that game made you want more?
Do you still own that game?

Please submit an entry or just peruse the list and smile. I hope you enjoy.

I am not sure how I was introduced to this game. All I know is that I played it infrequently as a child with my siblings back in the eighties. I was drawn by the cooperative play and inductive reasoning. I still own the game after narrowly loosing it in a flood in my parents basement.

I can just hear people crying foul for adding a second “first” game. In all fairness I played my first listing when I was fourteen years old and not able to begin the hobby without direction. I mean my parents bought all of my games. So, please grant me this boon.

I found this game after joining a high school club called the war games club. Oddly enough, we did not play any war games. Instead, we played role-playing games. One of those was an Avalon Hill title called Lords of Creation. When I went to my local hobby shop to acquire the game, I was introduced to the world of war games. I loved the recreation of historical combat and the idea of pitting my strategies against a worthy opponent. I still own the game, but have found few opponents to play with over the years. This has changed since becoming a member of BBG.

A third "first" you say?! Well, life is complicated. After high school, I spent most of my time in working to save enough money to spend my summers in the outdoors as a youth trail guide. It wasn’t until I went back to college that I was introduced to this one by a group of students in the lounge where I was studying. I promise this will be my last “first.”

I really enjoyed the interaction through the trading mechanism. It was enough strategy to get me excited about playing games again. From there the rest is history. I still own the game. It is one of the few hobby games that my family will play with me.

My favourite uncle gave me this when I was 15. I knew wargames existed, but this was the first one I had to play. I don't think my parents ever forgave him!

When I was in 5th or 6th grade, my best friend at the time got this game and I loved it. We probably played it five times or less, but it served it's purpose and served as the gateway game to more complex games from the games of childhood. I've never owned it. I'm content to have it just live in my memory as I suspect the actual thing wouldn't live up to my remembrances and I'm content with those....

Power Grid wasn't my first board game, but it was definately the game that markes the transition between Milton Bradley style gaming and "real" board gaming for me.

Citadels is the game that started my interest. I played it in a board games cafe with 6 friends and loved it. Went to find a set online and stick with it until I came to buy other games.

I played Dixit and Monopoly Deal before this but I just wasn't really into it.

Though I later on bought Dixit and loved it and played it more than 20 times with friends and family after watching Wil Wheaton's Tabletop series, and Dixit's still my favourite game.

Had pretty much always dug board games but it did not start getting really bad until I found BGG.com and this game.

Always had been a big fan of H.P. Lovecraft and when I found that there was a board game oozing with Cthulhu inspired theme it was a no brainer. And so began my transition from consoles to cardboard.

Easy to jump into but holds its own once you get going.

Sure chess, checkers and all the standbys were there, but along with card games those are the games you expect to play growing up.

Othello might be the actual beginning for me, but I don't have a hipster retro picture of me playing it...

I discovered board games through watching celebrity D&D games on Youtube. While I was watching one of the PAX videos, I saw a D&D board game on the recommended videos list and figured it would be an easy way to get some more gaming in with friends since it wouldn't require any prep. From there I followed more recommended videos for other games, and then I spent the next two months watching videos and reading up on hobby board games in my free time. I wasn't drawn in by any one game because by the time I ordered my first game, I knew that it was my kind of hobby and I had a long list of games to order.

Prior to this year, all there was to me was Catan, Munchkin, and 7 Wonders. Friends showed me these games and they were great, way better than Monopoly and shorter than Risk and so more playable. But soon these 3 games wore out their fun for me and board games once again disappeared from my consciousness.

Then this year Dungeons & Dragons: The Legend of Drizzt Board Game flew into my radar because I had read the books by Salvatore and it seemed like a good deal on Amazon. I had seen Dungeons & Dragons: Castle Ravenloft Board Game on book and hobby store shelves before, but the price and not knowing anything about it always deterred me.

Drizzt is the game that got me hooked into modern board games. After playing it and having a blast, I was eager to look up more new games. Youtube, BGG, Amazon, and the internet at large have also contributed greatly to this new hobby. Acquisition disorder has overtaken and I now have over 15 new games or expansions, and the year isn't over. 2013 is going to be a fantastic year of board games.
