Many large companies have stock symbols that are also used here in the BGG wargames forums as common abbreviations for games, game systems, game companies, etc. For example, "BGG" is the stock symbol for "Briggs and Stratton Corporation". (If you have a lawnmower, you may have used their products.)

Just for curiousity's sake, I thought it would be interesting to see how an investment portfolio made up of those companies would perform. I selected an arbitrary cut-off of $500M in market cap and equally weighted each investment at $1000, for a total investment of $10K.

As of January 1st, if you invested using wargame stock symbols, you would have made a 13.2% return. (With dividend payments, this is probably about one percent better, but I'm too lazy to do the calculations.) Your return would fall well short of the S&P500 index (+19%) but would have outperformed bonds significantly (-4.3%). If you had a mixed portfolio of stocks AND bonds, then you'd break-even at a roughly 75/25 mix of stocks/bonds.

This information, while hopefully accurate, is completely useless except as an example of how one random, but reasonably diversified portfolio performed over the last 8.5 months.

Here is how the individual investments break down:

BGG (Briggs and Stratton)was the second worst performer in the portfolio. Note that I could not find a reasonbly sized and publicly traded stock with the symbol of CSW or FA.

GMT (GATX) is a slight laggard in our portfolio. Mid-year, GMT was doing great and had a price in the mid 50's, but recent revenue and earnings misses leave us unrewarded, if still optimistic.

AH (Accretive Health)is by far the worst performer in the portfolio. Despite being my sentimental favorite, and a long-term holding since the early 70's, my AH investment seems to be losing favor.

On the other hand, Petropavlovsk PLC has seen a precipitous decline on the London exchange, collapsing by over 75% this year!

(sadly, that matches pretty closely with POG's performance on the top 50 rankings...)

Dec. 31 close: 361 GBP
Sept. 19 close: 70.5 GPB
