I know, this is a hypothetical question. No one travels to Essen just to buy only 3 games. But there are a many "Essen-lists" with information about lots of games and I am thankful for it. I realize submitting a huge list asks lots of times. But what are your 3 TOP 'want-to-buy-games' for Essen?
Please, feel free to add yours.

I have to admit, the theme is not really appealing to me, but I really like Matthias Cramer(Lancaster, Helvetia, Glen More) and I think Eggertspiele (Yedo, Cuba, Antike, John Silver) is doing great for a while now. This combination can't be wrong!

This one should be really special. I am certain that they really worked hard on it. And because I am a Belgian, I tend to buy games with Dutch rules. Expecting a lot from this!

If I am shopping for games, I always pick one just because I like the picture on the box. I even do not read the text on the back of the box. In Essen it will be Vikings.

Kind of going through this exercise for real at the moment. I would pick the following games:

Legacy: The Testament of Duke de Crecy

Read the rules (well laid out, made it easy to understand what the game was trying to acheive) and combine with the Blog posts about it this is my most want to play game from the Spiel Preview 2013 list.

My other two choices are from previous years, because they are not available in New Zealand (or the USA).

Space Station

This has been on my wishlist since 2011, and unlike many other games that I spot on the Spiel Preview list it has actually stayed there. Like the SF theme, and the actual mechanics sound like fun.

Wiraqocha expansion

Played my copy twice, good game but the sweet spot is three players (not an easy number). This expansion sounds like it fixes that, plus more.

Very close fourth is Kaispeicher expansion.

with expansion and kickstarter extras. i preordered naturally. and allthough it is not the newest game I dont mind. glad i'm able to pick up a copy.

Mush! Mush!: Snow Tails 2. i hope they improved snow tails. if they didn't i could still play snow tails version one on it. or can't I... anyway fragor is kind of a tradition

if I didnt own Dark Empire: Revolution this would be on my list. there are only 200 copies left and i suspect that if word of mouth breaks lose on this one it will sell out early. it seems fitting because in this game you need to talk a lot.

i haven't found my quirky game yet but a visit to the chinese pavillion is allways fun.

i feel i should add a train game and while they are some excellent oldies i don't own, russian railroads looks really promising. but since a 999 version is coming out...
legacy i probably acquire at spel ...
Panamax is my third pick. i like that the board of the prototype is so functional. my math brain starts to work just looking at it. my only question is how will it be if the board is upside down to you.

strangely enough I was thinking along a similar line, but with just one game allowed, but 3 is a bit more generous.

Well the first is above, 7 Days of Westerplatte, a novel theme and a co op wargame. Very interesting. Keen to get my hands on this one!! This was my top choice, another two....

W Zakładzie: Lubelski Lipiec '80, an interesting theme at a decent price. Certainly worth a punt and hopefully the language conversion won't be horrific!!

Going, Going, GONE!, was a tough choice, but this seems novel and real time is always good.

Do all 3 need to be Essen 2013 releases? whistle

If I were going, I'd be looking for some older games and hoping for the best.

However, limited to Essen releases, it'd be:

Concordia: this went from mild interest to hotness once I read the rules. It's a streamlined network building, resource engine, resource management deck builder with variable initial set up to improve replayability.

Russian Railroads: this is tentative since I haven't seen the rules yet, but this design team gets an autobuy until I see something that says otherwise.

Cornish Smuggler: this would probably be my third buy since I love network building, pick-up-and-deliver economic game with some deck building. Not sure if there's enough here or not, but I'm hopeful.

Finally, if one of the above falls through, Bremerhaven is the last game that looks interesting enough to pick up.
