We all know these games. While tearing the shrink open, you know it'll be awesome. You've read the reviews or you just FEEL it. The game is a perfect match for your group!

You get your group together and start playing. The game ends. Everyone's feeling a bit confused. You hyped the game a lot, but was it that great? Oh indeed it was! You just need more plays to REALLY UNDERSTAND the game!
But...did it really end up being awesome or have you already traded it away? Or does it still need few more plays for people to get it?

What games have you really believed in and played many times without getting it to make it's breakthrough with your group or yourself? Or do you actually have games you've successfully pushed through to become a classic?

Path to maybeness: This was one of the first games we bough. 7 Wonders was hyped and it was great! This was very hyped, how could it fail?

We bought it, we played it. Hum. Kinda, bland...and boring. Maybe we just didn't get it? I mean, so much different combos to try and so many different games with the ever changing pool of cards!

Let's get an expansion right away to get more out of it, it must get a lot better, they said in the internets that it gets more interaction too!

No. Still 100% same experience. Very very bland. Shuffling? Not a problem, the game itself isn't just fun.

But...how can it suck? Everyone likes it! Maybe someday...maybe another expansion....

Path to awesomeness: We played our first game. I had read the rules through few times with the everything in front of me. I explained the game, but it felt very overwhelming to me too. Never a good sign.

The first game was a bit weird. 3 player game, everything was kinda "oh, uhm, I guess this happens..." Next game we played we had to quit at turn 5 of 9 because we ran out of our scheduled time. Never a good sign for following plays...

It took few weeks before I kinda cheated the game back on the table. I still had faith...it had to be a good game. I knew there was a guy interested in the game but my wife had kinda told me she didn't really want to play Eclipse anymore. When she went out to take the dogs, I...uh...accidentally set-up the game and started explaining the rules.

BOOM! It was awesome and my wife, me and everyone else really enjoyed it!

Path to rejection: We were looking for a light, quick, easy to explain filler. This had just sold out in our FLGS. We happened to visit Sweden and found it there, yay!

As soon as we got back we tried 2p game. Uhm, it was just bad. It was quick and easy to explain, but that's it. Well, surely, it's better with more players!

We get some friends over and play a game. The game starts, the game ends. What happened? Well, nothing really... few dice there and here... Wasn't fun really. We just didn't get it, right? We must try again! And again!

After many tries and many different game groups, it still wasn't fun. Wasn't fun for me and I don't think it was fun for that many others either. It just didn't click.

As soon as I found a fella who actually liked it I sold it to him. Luckily, he has really enjoyed it.

Path to rejection: We wanted to get our first 2 player game and te guy in our FLGS suggested this. Seemed cool and had a nice theme! Well, after buying, I checked BGG. People were saying, that detective usually wins. Boo! But they also said that when you get better, Mr. Jack will also win.

I told this to my wife, and she said "ok".

The first game was ok, we both won our game as the detective, dang!
We need to get better to win with Mr. Jack! There's potential!

The second game was ok, we both won our game as the detective, dang!
We need to get better to win with Mr. Jack! There might be potential...

The third game was already kinda bad, we both won our game as the detective, dang!
Do we still want to get better? Uh... Okay, whatever! There is no potential!

Few more plays after that with the same result and it has sat in the gameshelf all alone...

I feel like I enjoy this game less than I really do. ...what??

In theory, this is among my favorite games. In practice, I get left feeling kind of meh about it. I keep hoping that with more plays I'll like it more, but not yet (after 6 plays)! I think I expect the game to be something it's not rather than accepting it for what it is and playing it thus. What remains to be seen is whether or not I like it for what it actually is rather than what I expect it to be.
