The question concerns my "perfect" top 30 board games. In my case, if I had to whittle down my collection to only thirty board games, which would these be? Not unlike some folks' "desert island" collections. Here are some of the loose criteria I've used in this artificial culling process:

1. How much accumulated enjoyment has this game brought me over the years? Is it fun to win and lose?
2. How does this add variety to my gaming experience?
3. What is the re-playability or long-term staying power of the game?

The astute of mind will notice a few glaring omissions to this GeekList. Namely, deck-builders and co-operative games. This omission is intentional. Some choices are no-brainers, others are a bit more subtle, so read carefully.

I also do not shy away from throwing in an expansion or two with the base game in this list. Not because the base game would be unplayable without the expansions. But because in each case, I believe the expansion(s) to further extend re-playability and further deepen the level of strategy introduced in the base.

My top choice in the general category of partnership traditional card games, great depth but I can easily teach you the gist of Tichu in a matter of minutes. This fire breathing giant completely smokes Euchre for best partnership game, which has developed a loyal following over the years--like a hound or something. It rises from the ashes above and beyond most of the short-lived modern board and card games we see published today, very few of which seem to last.

Best with 4; we've played with 6 but it's a bit wonky. My gaming time is pretty much divided as follows: 50% Tichu, 50% everything else. And I probably wouldn't have it any other way. That speaks volumes about how intense, enjoyable, and engaging a couple hours of Tichu can be.

As another benefit, I've also become a rather decent card counter and a great reader of body language.

All roads lead to this game, which exudes complex interactions and chaotic fun. One might say that Carl Chudyk didn't put this design together in a day. If I was five years old, this would be my bag of candy. Wonderful "take that" mechanics, many ways to thwart an opponent's plan, and excellent re-playability for a card game.

The Black Box edition has made this all the more enjoyable to bring to the table.

This game represents a transitional form for Chad Jensen, as he crosses over from the war game domain to design an exceptionally aggressive and tactical Euro. Dominant Species fills the spot at the top of the food chain for a longer, interactive, and bloody area control game. Adapt quickly to survive, or be wiped from the map trying. An intuitive design, a war-game disguised as a euro. This game is also quite flexible in terms of player count (2-6).

My economic engine of choice. A steam-powered-house. Steel-driver John Henry himself would lay down his hammer to play this one. Playable 2-6 players, a multitude of expansions available either PnP or on the market. That Steam has rules for two distinct levels ("Basic" and "Standard") means that it is easier to teach to new players, yet challenging and cut-throat for those with enough experience to leave the diapers at home. Engineering your best track to victory has never been better.

In my humble opinion, the best dice-placement game to date. Simply replaces or out-classes the likes of Kingsburg, Macao, or Alien Frontiers.

Let the flame-throwing --erhm-- flaming begin.

Make sure to leave space on the table for this tableau-building masterpiece. Including Race for the Galaxy: The Gathering Storm, Race for the Galaxy: Rebel vs Imperium, and Race for the Galaxy: The Brink of War. Next to Tichu, this game takes the spot of 2nd favorite among my regular gaming group, logging in a large number of plays that past 2-3 years (>100). And of course Keldon AI is wonderful.

The Reiner Knizia classic, or what happens in the garden of Eden stays in the garden of Eden. Full of conflict. Externally, looks rather boring. Internally, simple ruleset but vast complexity. I'm not really sure how to classify this game. Area majority? Tile-laying? Sheer brilliance?

In order to play this, you'll need to have been around the block a few times. This knocks up, er, raises up, the bar, so to speak, a few notches above your average CDG war game. A ton of bang for your buck. The box is so big and heavy, it's often likened to a Beached whale. What else could possibly fill the category of "Hey, you and my ... five... other friends, we all have a whole Saturday free, what epic mega-game shall we play today?"

Edit: there appears to be no (or little) love for this Virgin. And I'm talking about Elizabeth I. whistle

Along with Chess, my two-player abstracts of choice. Simple, elegant, portable, and the nice solid Bakelite hexes can be used for any number of other dexterity games, including flicking across carpet and knocking down hex-towers.

You may be plowing through the rulebook the first few times you play Agricola, but planting yourself at the table and working through it is time well spent.. Recommended with Agricola: Farmers of the Moor. My favorite pure-euro worker-placement game. I went on a bit of a Uwe Rosenberg kick after that, but have since cooled. Still come back to loving Agricola every now and then, though, and I have a lot of fond memories playing this with my wife.

A split between scrabble and dutch blitz. Now this might make some run for the hills, and I admit that it isn't my game of choice. It's never a slip-up to bring this to the table with a higher-player-count mixed group. And sometimes (or perhaps, most of the time?) it is better to host a group of non-gamers willing to try something new, than to be alone and attempt yet another solitaire.
