Per Fischer - The Resonance Gene

------------------------------------------

The Galaxy was thriving, held together by a vast bureaucratic system comprising numerous senates, councils, courts, trade agreements and treaties across all known systems and sectors.

For as long as anyone could recall, there had always been the superstition, fired by a steady flow of rumours, that a discovery capable of unbalancing the stability of the entire galaxy had been made. It was foretold that this discovery would potentially turn empire against empire, species against species. But until now they were just that: superstition and rumours.

Not any more.

Scientists from a number of different races, working together at one of the Unites Empires' research facilities in the Braemer-Voge system, have developed a new gene that can lock onto any race or species's DNA. The gene changes every single cell in the organism to become what the scientists have labelled 'resonant'.

A secret emergency advisory board under the Senatorial Council for Galactic Equillibrium, which oversees scientific research with military or political implications (ie. all research), decides to act immediately upon the news.

A small team of agents are dispatched to Braemer-Voge to track down the scientists and shut the project down for good, and recover all intel about the Resonance Gene.

Meanwhile, a Wraith reconnaissance vessel intercepts and decrypts the orders to terminate the Resonance Gene project, and makes its way to the Braemer-Voge system.

Robert C. – Only a spark

------------------------------------------

Live broadcast from the Main Chamber of Galactic Congregation

-And now the voice will take the delegate of Terrans Federation Senator Kojawashi.
-Thank you very much Secretary. Dear delegates, for a thousand years in our galaxy there was peace, freedom and prosperity, I think it's about time that freedom was also in the trade. The Treaty on Free Trade is a solution that will make it possible. For everyone…
-Treason! You think only about your own race, money and earthly-trading corporations!!! suddenly someone shouted from the hall.
Delegate Shu zlthu not I gave you a voice – Insectoid was reminded by Secretary - Mr. Kojawashi please continue.
As I was saying ...

Suddenly, the screen flashed and then was only sign TRANSMISSION INTERRUPTED

Historical Almanach Enlighted Libraros of Universi
Year 1 AD Burning Suns

Without a doubt the terrorist attack on the headquarters of the galactic, in which main Chamber was destroyed and many of the delegates had been killed or wounded was a turning point in the history of the Burning Suns galaxy.

It was enough a couple of months to long-hidden disagreements between the races were revived and prevailed distrust, suspicion and mutual accusations. Terrans blame for the attack Insektoids, suspected them of wiling to sabotage the vote. Insektoids not owe Terrans and claiming that them stainless behind the attack, because the galactic council limited the expansion of Terran trade. Cyborgs who have lost their greatest leaders, argued that the most important leaders of the Templars was not in Main Chamber that day, and in the result Templars suffered in the attack the least. Guardians silently wondered if Wraiths not decided to chosen after a period of calm to return again to spread panic and terror in the galaxy.

Neomorphs investigation resulted in further doubt when it became apparent that in order to planting bombs, terrorist had to squeeze through a 5m long hole diameter of 20 cm, which was feasible only for Changelings and then broke the station safety systems using implants which could be used only by Cyborgs.
Galaxy has become a proverbial powder keg, for war was needed only a spark.

EPILOGUE
Location unknown
- Vastatoris you filled out your last mission well. Getting rid of the main leaders made the empires soon will throw at each other's throats. For us remain only complete the work of destruction. Start preparing for the second phase of invasion.
-Yes, My Lord.

Martin Bødker Enghoff - A burning mosaic, first piece

------------------------------------------

The sky was burning.

This, however, was not immediately clear to the plant-like shape standing amongst thousands like it, who instead noticed a more subtle increase in air temperature. Pores opened across the shape to increase evaporation of water, but they did not provide sufficient cooling. Thus the still increasing heat brought the shape to a slightly more awakened state. Not wanting to leave its slumber yet the skin of the shape took a lighter colour, reflecting more of the incoming light. But it got warmer still and slowly, almost unnoticeably, eyes opened.

Only then did the not quite so plant-like shape that was called Rash-an see the burning mosaic around it. Everything was more intense; the other plant shapes awash in stunning greens and reds, the blue of the air more livid than ever seen before. Across the beautiful blue a whole palette of colours danced like Rash-an's northern relatives sometimes saw at night, painting a terrifying image. Above it all loomed the sun: A flaming and painfully bright yellow-white giant, far too big, slinging tentacle-like streamers of searing light into the sky. The eyes on the Rash-an shape grew larger enabling them to make out the details of a silhouette in front of the raging giant above. Non-organic, evil, glistening metal, almost unbearable to look at even with the enhanced eyes' protective membrane. But there was no mistaking it – Rash-an knew with the certainty of ancestral memory shared with millions of changeling siblings.

It was them. The Enemy. They had come and they had set the Sun on fire.

Stephen Mould - A Simple Mission

------------------------------------------

Mission Log of Battlecruiser Shining Star.

Mission proceeding, all partners on course. 14 hours since last contact with the Templar colony, designation ‘Aden’s spear’. No contact with Wraith craft so far. Our Templar partners have sent a transcript of the last message. The chain of events follows all previously observed Wraith behaviour patterns. We will arrive in three hours. If Wraith craft are present, we will engage on sight. If they have established a beachhead, we will convene to discuss a ground response.

Captain Jonathan Smith, Personal log.

I don’t like this. I don’t mean the Wraiths, I’ve been on enough Joint Defence Force operations. They’re testing us, feeling at the edges of civilised space, looking for weakness. The problem is, they might find it.

Tensions are high, same as back home. The Guardian Captain Jirell and the Insectoid Queen are barely communicating. The Changeling was caught installing a spy on the Templar ship and the Templar Prelate, what’s his name? Azerank or Azieber or something, is trying to convince the rest of us our ships are crawling with spies. As for the Cyborgs, they’ve been caught in everyone’s systems. No, not caught. That would imply they hide what they do. They don’t give a damn. They hack systems, intercept messages and run constant analyses of our capabilities. I’ve resorted to writing on paper so they don’t find out when I last crapped.

We’ll be lucky to get to this colony without blowing each other out of the sky.

‘Joint Defence Force,’ what a load of bs. Just an excuse for ET’s to order around real people. Another way for these things to keep humanity from reaching it’s potential. Still, with things as they are, it won’t be long before we put them in their place.

Anyway, got to get this done first. With any luck, we’ll be recalled to Sol afterwards.

Smith.

Sean Olynyk - Galaxy lost

------------------------------------------

In the beginning our galaxy had thousands of species roaming the stars. Our creators were the oldest, the wisest, strongest. The others looked to them for guidance and protection. While our galaxy was not entirely peaceful, it was stable. Until the wraiths came, creatures that fed and grew stronger off of the fear of their prey. Our creators fought them with the fury of a thousand super novas. It was not enough to stem the tide as black as the empty void of space itself. Many of the other races joined them in their fight, many others fled. None of them survived. The creators themselves were on the brink of destruction when they created us. We were designed to protect what was left of the galaxy. We awoke too late however. The creators were gone, devoured. We failed them, and we failed our galaxy.

Now the wraiths hunt again. They have found a new galaxy to devour, a new one filled with life and fear. When they arrive however, they will find us standing guard; we will fulfill our duty to our creators. We know no fear, we know no death, and we are immortal. The burning suns are in our veins. We are the hunter’s bane, and they shall know fear!.

Grand patriarch of the Guardian Armada
-addressing the guardian troops before the jump to the Milky Way galaxy to cut off the Wraith advance.

Raymond Dyer - Peace is hard

------------------------------------------

Master Li Quan went through the paces with this new cadet group of fighter pilots. It was always difficult to teach TaiChichaun to the adventurous ones. They wanted action. They wanted to prove themselves against the best of the other races. Peace was hard to maintain when war had been staved off for so long. The thrill of combat, the euphoria of surviving death, the glory of victory became goals. For some reasons the horror of mutilated bodies, the foul taste of defeat, and the humiliation of defeat were always placed on the heads of the foe. All were affected by war victor and vanquished, and the affects were to be avoided. Li Quan was not a popular instructor. TaiChichaun was consider boring by the young and active. They enjoyed the other martial arts like Taekwondo and Jiujutsu much more. They were more active and the difference between victory and defeat obvious to all.

Master Li Quan knew the time was coming. The dogs of war were massing. Cyborgs were sending agents to sabotage technology of other races. Changelings were infiltrating and causing confusion. The Insectiod races were swarming into border systems in search of substance. The Templars were seeking allegiances. The Guardians were reinforcing their borders. The Terrans were building up their forces, like this group of pilots. Peace was so much harder to promote, it seemed boring, inactive. No one ever gave sustaining peace its due merits. Very soon The Suns themselves were going to be Burning.

On another planet Grikama watched the stars and raised his arms. The harsh clicks of his mandibles made rushed harsh sounds. The members of his hive raised weapons and the crescendo of noise rose to near unbearable decibels. The time to mass for war had come. The ships were waiting, the need for food was desperate. Too many worlds had survived blights in recent years. The stars pointed the way to better harvests.

High up in the mountains the agents from the Cyborg net transmitted the news of success. Their efforts had taken years to create a food and water shortage. Now the Insectiods would invade, they had to invade to survive. The Cyborg armada would follow in their wake. They also had needs, and the long-lived Templars would finally cease to be a thorn in their efforts.

So it went, Faction sabotaged faction, agents spread rumors, and the truth was murdered. Thus was the start of wars, Greed, Lust, and the Desire for Immortality.

Keresher' Raoul Hagenbeek - The Finity of Space

------------------------------------------

Due to the peace all races had time to reproduce and without war they kept growing, and outgrowing their current living situations. Years ago probes were sent out searching for nearby sytems that could be used to expend the empire towards.

And once again the report from the many probes sent out, all return negative. No hospitable planetary systems found. Suns that hosted habitable planets had grown scarce. No planets that could be reached within a normal lifespan. Even communication would take years.

The closest habitable planetary systems could host one or two dependances of the races, but due to the peace and trade all races have come to rely on each other for resources and hardly any race could, or would suffer isolation on behalf of the others.

Ideas were pitched, from trying to build mechanical planets or equipping asteroids with living quarters. But the final idea turned out to be an idea that was publicly approved. Sending out an ark with representatives of all races to colonize and at the same time intensify the research in faster interstellar travel.

However most races did not look for representatives, They did not want to life as far away from each other that it would take a life time to reach each other. Why can’t one of the other races just leave. No, they weren’t looking for settlers, they started looking for soldiers.

Random Fleming - Critical Mass

------------------------------------------

High Protector Gladius stared blankly at the holo-vid, quickly assimilating what had just happened.

For one moment, Chancellor Torvin Kellar, a jovial and portly Terran, was reassuring the Galactic Council that peaceful times were upon them. Though there were headline challenges to unifying the Eight – the known races in this corner of the galaxy – with determination and perseverance, we were rising to a place of harmony and prosperity.

Then the chancellor and the Council members began to softly glow, first yellow, then a bright white. As faces began to twist into painful expressions, there was an audible “pop” and the Council, and transmission, was no more.

Flashpacks, Gladius thought. Incendiary Cyborg tech.

The Guardian leaned back in his seat and ordered the Titan-class cruiser, The Sentinel, forward. War is coming, he feared. And only one other thing was certain.

The Guardians, the iconic defenders of the galaxy, had finally failed.

Kevin Chen - The Best Intentions

------------------------------------------

It started as it usually does, with the best intentioned of Men.

For a thousand years a combination of jump gates, lush uninhabited planets, plentiful solar energy and the remnants of ancient civilizations had made the galaxy of Burning Suns both peaceful and prosperous. Hundreds of small empires rose up and spread throughout the galaxy spreading their influence and culture along with their colonists who kept strictly to themselves. That was not enough for a Dr. Estelle Matin – a young idealistic Terran physicist who knew that true peace would only come when all sentients could finally communicate without relying on government controlled jump gate couriers. So while smugglers traded in secret and multilateralists dreamed of a League of Empires Dr. Matin spent her life at the galactic center coaxing photons into escaping Einstein’s prison. She sacrificed her life to massive matter-antimatter explosions that pulsed photons across the light speed barrier and to every one of the empires populating the galaxy of Burning Suns.

Embedded in the pulses was a message containing every experimental note and equation Dr. Matin had written, including the way to cheaply harvest and contain large quantities of stable antimatter, the secret to faster than light communication and a final message. “Let there be true peace at last.”

In conference rooms across the galaxy of Burning Suns the same decision was reached. Dr. Matin had thought too small. With the power to communicate faster than light, true empire was now possible.

The race was on.

Douglas Grinn - Secrets of a Dying Sun

------------------------------------------

Thousands of generations ago the Ancient races descended upon the center of the galaxy to save a dying star. Created from the flares of the dying sun this second sun stabilized and gave new life to the galaxy.

Religions and ideologies flourished as the burning suns promised a better life. Foreign races migrated to the new systems, hope had been restored.

That miracle saved a galaxy.

Their descendants prospered in the thousand years since.

A discovery in the tombs of a dormant planet would be responsible for setting a galaxy on edge. Secrets the Ancients buried long ago, that planets had been destroyed, entire systems wiped away, races sacrificed and removed from history.

The evidence pointed to all. No race was safe from accusation.

Attacks begin to occur on the outer rim. Civil wars erupt within the systems. Sightings of extinct races feeds a public's growing concern.

Paranoia grips the galaxy.

Alliances become strained, as territories are seized. Races take measures to protect the resources and ideologies they treasure.

Seeds of mistrust are sown as the races armor themselves against the ghosts of past transgressions. Ships of transport and commerce become those of war and defense.

Allies become suspect as treaties are broken and assassinations became common forms of diplomacy.

The galaxy was now fractured.

Even if the accusations were proven false, there was no turning back. The words had been spoken, honors have been challenged, and allegiances doubted.

A galaxy is about to change forever.
