There is a game on yucata.de. A game I don't particularly care for. A game I don't, well, "get". If you would ask me for strategic advice, I'd recommend asking someone else. If I were to play against another player who knows what she's doing in this game, I'd expect to get totally destroyed by her.

Currently, my yucata.de rank for this game is 22 out of 751.

Anyone else there who's good at a game despite lacking any sort of confidence based on competence?

This is the game I'm talking about in my OP.

You get tiles which you can place in your tableau, activating all surrounding tiles. There's whiskey and chieftains and special tiles, and players who have more of these than the player with the least of these get points three times in the game. There are also tiles that generate victory points when triggered.

My winning strategy? Well, just take what looks like a sensible choice and try not to get too far behind the others with regard to whiskey and stuff, don't worry too much about the current scores and *get that abbey*. (If you play Glen More, you know which Abbey I'm talking about.)

Weirdly enough, it works ...

I will add mine.

I've been playing several tournaments on Yucata, including one for this little game. It seems simple enough. I won enough of my tournament games that I qualified for the semi-finals - the first in the series of tournaments I'd achieved that, despite some other games which I thought I knew better.

What makes me add it here is that in the semi-finals, playing against people who actually understand the game, I got thoroughly spanked. So how did I win those first games?

A new gaming buddy brought out Trajan. There was a LOT going on with the board, but my eyes were drawn to the mancala, so I mostly played mancala, occasionally putting doodads here or there if I sort of understood what was happening.

And I won.

Not a boast. Actually, ripping on myself because I didn't grok it all that well. But the experience made me wonder whether some games seem deep because they're busy.

Played this once or twice, always in a mixed group. A very mixed group--as in boardgames = Monopoly. But no matter, as it turns out, having strategy or planning ahead or knowing what you are doing has very little to doing well when playing this game.

end rant.

begin flaming.
