This is my first solitaire game on the table for the month. I really like Worthington's games, and I've bought a lot of them lately. I want to make October the one to play my unplayed Worthington games.

Plus, last month, I played Birth of a Legend and read Michael Rinella's EXCELLENT article on the peninsula campaign and Lee's 7-day campaign, so I'm interested in gaming more on the topic. I glanced through the rules a couple of months ago and it looks like this one has some really interesting ideas.

I am the CSA and it is truly the lost cause at this point. It's mid-1964. Somehow, I've managed to hold Vicksburg and Virginia is quite safe, but he's taken the border states, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Tennessee.

But this game, I finally saw what the hub bub was all about. This is one amazing game.

I am the USA.

I tried this solitaire earlier in the year and wasn't really impressed, but of course, I was playing it incorrectly, but I didn't know this until I started playing with Jason.

Now, I'm liking it. It's a lighter CDG with low counter density. It's a gorgeous game: the best looking one in my collection.

We spent 1861 building up our forces. I landed Butler and a small force and took New Orleans. Now, it's 1862 and with our forces ready and built up, it's clobbering time. I'm not sure who's going to do the clobbering, though

I am the CSA.

We are feeling our way through the game. Neither of us know it and this one is heavier than most of the Hammer-style Columbia games that we have played, so the pace has been slower, due to constant rules checking and correcting.

So far, we are at 11:00 AM on Day 1. I rushed up and took Seminary Ridge quickly and he fell back toward the town (and ultimately toward Cemetery Ridge) and the Peach Orchard.

I don't have a strong opinion. I like some of the ideas in the game (fire first, then move, for example). It has a lot of detailed rules (number of hexside crossings in a forward position, and such). So far, they appear fiddly, but we haven't slugged it out enough to see why those rules are there. I'm betting they are there to keep you from gaming the system and creating ahistorical results.

I am the Axis.

He's "won" this one. It's all over but the shouting. I had horrific dicing on the 3rd turn and on the 4th turn, I stupidly "passed" because I had a sweet hand and wanted to see what he did and react to that: forgetting the clock is my enemy. He passed and I lost that turn.

Now, when I say "won" the way the game is supposed to play is that each player bids on how many strong defense areas he can hold as the Soviets. The higher number takes them. Since it was his first game and my second, we didn't know what a good guess was, so we just took it. However, I have only taken 2 areas, and that's an epic fail on any measuring stick.

We are still on the Corporal/Seargent scenario. We've both been really busy last month, so the plays weren't flying as quickly as others. My Germans are getting crushed, but at the same time, I have a lot to learn about setting up a defensive perimeter.

As far as this game, I go on and on about it every month. I think Sean and I agree both think this is the best squad-level game out there. Once Band of Brothers: Ghost Panzer comes out with the new Vassal module, I figure we'll be playing it at the same time.

I am the Brits in both.

In my game with Mike, I am experimenting with a New England strategy. I have to say that I'm not a fan of it. It's too hard with the starting positions of the Americans: the Quebec-Massachusetts connection, and especially the lack of winter quarters. I've had great hand draws. The only big card I haven't got so far has been the Benedict Arnold card. It can work against an inexperienced player, but against smart cool customers like Mike and Greg, they won't panic.

In my game with Greg, my first hand screamed "SOUTHERN STRATEGY!" and by the time we started, I was far enough along with Mike to see that I didn't like the New England strategy. I jumped out to a big southern push and took the Carolinas, Georgia, and Virginia to go with Massachusetts, Canada, and Delaware. He took back Delaware. Against less experienced players, this one would be all over. I'd be in Maryland by now. But Greg is one cool cat: he taught me most of what I know in this game and he's working on eating into gains. I really need a "War Ends 1779" card

I am the Americans and we are playing the Saratoga scenario. It is our first game. So far, my Vassal module is holding up well (we are testing it out). I think we have both been impressed the more that we get into this game. It's not nearly the sim that Saratoga is, but it's pretty good for being such a simple game. The rules set is clear, short, and simple, but this has a lot of deep play as the players manage their cards and maneuver for position. It is in truth, a TACTICAL-level Card Driven Game, not quite a full Mark Herman-inspired CDG, but darned close in the spirit of it.

And right now, we are having a huge slug fest at the opening at Freeman's Farm, so I have to be impressed with how the design-for-effect has matched up with the history from a pair of beginners.

1942 January Week 1 - 1 Oct 2013

I began the 1st week of January, 1942. My torpedoes are awful and I've failed to sink or hit quite a few ships I should have thus far. Previously Manila has fallen and along with it the sub base. Subs that once sailed from Manila are rebasing to Fremantle, Pearl Harbor, or the sub tender at Suribaya. This week I only sunk 1 Japanese ship for 5T. And that was by a Dutch submarine, so it won't help me make my 90,000 ton mark by week 4 of February 1942. I have a lot of sinking to do over the next 8 weeks to hit the 90,000 ton mark so I'm not reassigned to a desk job in DC.

I also lost two submarines to transit events. The Seadragon and the Sargo were lost at sea, cause unknown. They were both of the New S2 class, and were two of the best subs in my fleet. I am sure to feel their loss over the coming weeks.

1942 January Week 2 - 4 Oct 2013

This week saw the war event "Run to Corregidor" which didn't have too much of an effect on me. Many of my subs were in transit returning to base or launching from base. I didn't have too many conducting active patrols. Nevertheless, I was able to sink two merchant ships for a total of 6 tons. I'm still behind where I want to be to reach my 90 ton requirement in 6 weeks. I'll have quite a few more subs patrolling next week, so I hope to send some more ships to the bottom then.

These war start torpedoes with a -2 modifier are frustrating. I can only imagine how frustrated real early war sub skippers were witnessing the ineffective nature of their weapons and being unable to convince Navy brass to improve them.

1942 January Week 3 - 6 Oct 2013

My US sub fleet finally tallied up some kills this week, sinking 6 Japanese merchant ships for a total of 16,000 tons. However, defective torpedoes failed to sink 3 merchant and auxillery ships rated at approximately 13,000 tons that were confirmed hits. Further failed attacks may have been attributable to defective torpedoes, but other sub captains were not able to gather conclusive observations as to whether their torpedoes actually hit their marks.

No subs were reported lost this week and no major war events occurred. 14 subs reported contact with enemy convoys with six of those subs getting confirmed kills.

1942 January Week 4 - 7 Oct 2013

This week saw Barrier Mission to the East Indies Straights in the Makassar and Molucca Straights being forced down my throat from up on high. I had to divert seven subs to this action to please the brass overhead. The effort was failure from my point of view as no Japanese shipping was sunk and one sub came back damaged. Perhaps it served some purpose higher up.

US subs sunk three small Japanese merchantmen for a total of 6,000 tons this week. Total tonnage sunk by US subs is at 45,000 tons, half of what it needs to be in four weeks so I keep my job as ComSubPac. DC is howling for results and it'll be the end of my war if I don't deliver in time.

In keeping with a developing pattern, three more merchant ships were struck by torpedoes that reportedly didn't detonate, costing us an estimated 9,000 tons that are still transporting goods for the Japanese war machine.

1942 February Week 1 - 8 Oct 2013

This week witnessed the fall of the Dutch East Indies. Six subs were diverted to evacuating Allied personnel in front of the Japanese advance. Several US and Allied subs were forced to rebase from Surabaya to Freemantle. This severely reduced the number of subs conducting patrol actions.

Although no subs were lost this week, no Japanese vessels were reported sunk either. More reports are making their way here claiming that our torpedoes are failing and letting many Japanese ships steam away. Reports also suggested that Japanese destroyers were more prevalent this week and hampered some of our efforts.

Five submarines were withdrawn to California for major refitting and refurbishment. Six new boats joined our fleet and cold Dutch Harbor is now active.

1942 February Week 2 - 15 Oct 2013

Radio contact with subs this week indicated some good opportunities opened before our subs and a couple were taken advantage of. USS Grayling reported sinking a 15,000 ton merchant while Triton reportedly sunk a 5,000 ton oil tanker (AO). Intel shows the Auxilery vessel Mogamigawa Maru (aircraft transport) was damaged and will be out of commission for a couple months. Two more weeks to hit the tonnage target DC has given me. This week helped but I'll need at least 24,000 tons in the next two weeks. With more subs on patrol next week, I hope to hear some favorable news.

1942 February Week 3 - 15 Oct 2013

Incoming intel reports that this has been our most successful week yet as nine Japanese ships were sunk by US subs for 29,000 tons and one 15,000 merchant ship was sunk by a Dutch sub. However, an estimated 10,000 tons of shipping was hit but undamaged supposedly to more faulty torpedoes. Resistance to the malfunctioning torpedo claims is still strong among the ordnance folks above me. They keep blaming the sub captains for poor shooting. I've started to push a little harder to have the torpedoes evaluated though unsuccessfully so far. However, having met the tonnage quota a week early, I can now breathe a short sigh of relief, though I now await word of a new target to be met in 3 months. Word just came in today of an intercepted radio transmission from a C1 class Japanese sub. Apparently it sank what must be the USS Sealion in an ambush in the South Philippine Sea.

However, still infected by the ETO bug, we pulled AE:TK out and are going to give it a whirl. Very excited about this prospect. I really like the TK engine.....

This is an easy game to get to the table. I have 2 opponents asking me to play with them. As of yet I've only ever played as Caesar. I think I'd like to see it from Pompey's side now.

Last month I completed the battle at Eylau. This month I'm moving on to Freidland.

I played the Barbarossa scenario twice on the weekend. As the Germans I gave a major victory to the Russians. In all honesty I had only a sketchy plan and hadn't coordinated my HQs well enough. I managed to take Odessa, Kiev, Riga, and Sevastopol before November '41 ended.

The second game saw me as the Russians. Despite the German breakthroughs, I managed to hold onto Riga and Odessa. My line collapsed in late October in order to pull back and defend Moscow and Leningrad. When the dust had settled I had managed to achieve a Decisive Victory.

I would have thought that the Germans would have an easy time in this scenario. However, the 40 point handicap was very significant. unless the Germans can push far and fast, and take some of the major cities, they will lose the scenario.

I love this game and will be playing more this month.

I was given a copy of this game over the weekend. I haven't played any of the "20" series before and wanted to try one out before I committed to picking up Fading Glory in GMT's next customer appreciation sale.

A learning game with Adhika using VASSAL. He's pretty slow on the logs, but probably because he has more to learn than I do. It's been over 5 years since I played this one but that 1 game got a lot of concepts through my head.

He has broken Kentuckian Neutrality on Turn 1, and I captured West Virginia. Price managed to rout Lyon in Springfield so Missouri and Kentucky will need to be nailed down soon. Turn 2 has begun!

My VASSAL "campaign" with grognard Dave continues. We're on the Battle of Ilipa now and it looks grim for me. I cannot really complain as somehow all my other Hasdrubal led battles have been surprise victories. Hasdrubal (the Hannibal brother one) is the King of Battle!

Soloing this one before I likely trade it away. I know the system from Hornet Leader, but have never before given this one a try. Some alone time here in Singapore gives me a chance to get it to the table.

A game of this is scheduled with some Singaporean gamers. I may only be teaching/coaching, but I love this game and am glad to do it. Hopefully I'll be actually playing Angola!
