Having been an avid TV watcher (addict?) in my youth, ABC had a number of television shows that I remember fondly.

Some of the most popular and iconic TV shows of all time first aired in the '60s on ABC.

For many born after that decade, it may be surprising to see how many TV shows -- even obscure ones -- had board games nominally based on them.

Feel free to add your favorites whether they had games associated with them or not.

Batman

It aired on both Wednesday and Thursday nights. Wednesday always ended in a cliff-hanging predicament, and Thursday resumed with the Dynamic Duo escaping from the perilous plight and subduing the villain.

Adam West played Batman/Bruce Wayne, with Burt Ward as Robin/Dick Grayson. Loads of celebrities appeared as guest villains, including

Cesare Romero as the Joker

Frank Gorshin as the Riddler

Burgess Meredith as the Penguin

Vincent Price as Egghead

Catwoman was played by three different actresses: Julie Newmar, Lee Meriweather, and Eartha Kitt

The second season saw the addition of Batgirl.

"To the Batcave, Robin!"

The Green Hornet

The success of Batman led to the production of the Green Hornet -- a crime fighting hero from the days of radio and movie serials. Van Williams starred as the Green Hornet.

It didn't do nearly as well as Batman, but it is most noted for the actor who starred as the Hornet's sidekick Kato: Bruce Lee.

Combat!

This series set in France during World War Two followed a squad led (alternatively) each week by Sergeant Saunders (Vic Morrow) and Lieutenant Hanley (Rick Jason). Other regulars in the cast included Kirby, Billy, Little John, Doc (the medic), and "Caje."

It ran for a number of years, its popularity probably waning as public sentiment toward the Vietnam War soured.

Jo Davidsmeyer, a childhood friend of mine who wrote the defintive guide to this TV series, listed all the wounds suffered by Saunders and Hanley over the course of the series, and each had several dozen -- gunshots, concussions, cuts, stab wounds, burns, etc. Of course, the extras and some of the guest stars didn't fare so well. Extras were routinely schwacked -- sort of like red shirting in Star Trek.

"Kirby (Little John, Caje), take the point."

12 O'Clock High

Probably due to the success of Combat!, this World War II drama series about the lives and trevails of a B-17 bomb group based in England aired for a couple of years. It was based on the best selling novel and hit movie starring Gregory Peck as Brigadier General Frank Savage.

Robert Lansing played General Savage in the first season of the TV series, I think he presented one of the most realistic, credible military characters on TV. In the first episode of the second season, Savage was killed off on a mission over Germany, and Colonel Joe Gallagher (ably played by Paul Burke) took command of the group.

Like Combat!, its longevity may have been shortened by the growing unpopularity of the Vietnam War.

McHale's Navy

Not all war series on ABC were serious. This series about the adventures and PT-73 lasted a few years, and can probably be credited for launching the TV comedy career of Tim Conway (Ensign Parker). Gavin MacLeod (later captain of the Love Boat) was also in the crew.

In the last season, the PT-73 and its antagonist Captain Binghamton (played by Joe Flynn) moved from the South Pacific to Italy. By this time, the writing had already been exhausted, and the Italy episodes were pretty weak.

Binghamton's aide was Lieutenant Elroy Carpenter.

This World War II drama series featured 3 American soldiers, 1 British soldier, and 2 jeeps with mounted machine guns, raiding and marauding behind German lines in North Africa.

The plots were more outlandish -- comic book-ish -- than those that had aired on Combat! and 12 O'Clock High.

It was filmed in Spain.

This comedy about a California teenaged girl and her widowed father was based on the movie of the same name, and tried to latch on to the rising popularity of the surfing culture. Sally Field was Gidget. Her boyfriend was nicknamed Moon Doggie (if you can believe it.)

Unfortunately for the show, it got off to a slow start, and ABC decided to cancel it even though its ratings were rising.

It was quite popular for its time, and was later revived as a film. It's rival on CBS was The Munsters.

The Newlywed Game

The Dating Game was such a hit that it was only logical that this show would be created.

Three newlywed couples competed for prizes by seeing how well they knew their spouses. With the spouses off stage, their partners were asked a series of questions. The answers were written on cards. The spouses then returned and for each answer that matched their partner's on the card, they scored points.

There were laughs and arguments galore.

The Untouchables

This crime series -- first aired in 1959 and running through 1963 -- was set in Chicago during the late Prohibition era, with G-man Eliot Ness (Robert Stack) pursuing some of the most notorious gangsters of the era. Ness was a historical character, but the episodes were mostly fictionalized stories.

The show was very violent (though not too graphic) for the early Sixties, with drive-by shooting and ambushes -- all with numerous Thompson submachine guns blazing away, of course.

Italian-American anti-defamation groups openly objected to ABC because the gangsters -- both historical (i.e Capone, Nitti) and fictional -- tended mainly to be of Italian descent. Other groups objected to the violence, with one TV watchdog group calling it "not fit for television."

This Disney production ran on ABC from 1958-1961. When I viewed it, it had three heroes which aired in rotation from week to week.

The Swamp Fox - played by Leslie Nielsen. This was my favorite of the three; it was the only non-Western. Nielsen was a leading man type who had a successful "second career" as a comic actor in films like Airplane and The Naked Gun series. It had it's own game.

Texas John Slaughter -- played by Tom Tryon. Years later, Tryon authored The Other, which was made into one of the more eerie movies I've seen.

The Nine Lives of Elfego Baca -- played by Robert Loggia.

Gene Barry played the very wealthy, debonaire Amos Burke, who happened to also be a detective captain on the Los Angeles Police Department. And he was quite a ladies' man.

Each episode was only 30 minutes long, but loaded with guest stars, which makes them fun to watch even today.

In its final season, with the James Bond craze peaking, the series was retitled Amos Burke, Secret Agent, and Burke went about the international scene -- perhaps a bit more credible for a man of wealth than being a cop riding around from crime scene to scene in a Rolls Royce.

F Troop

The Western genre was very popular from the late 1950s and into the mid 1960s. This series was a Western/military comedy set in the Old West at "Fort Courage."

SPY magazine once noted the similarities between F Troop and the movie Dances With Wolves.

1. Both had officers who are rewarded for bravery for unintentionally turning defeat into victory during the Civil War, and given an army post out West.

2. Both officers had beautiful girlfriends dressed in buckskin.

3. Both officers dealt with friendly local Indians.

F TROOP: Cancelled after 2 seasons / DANCES WITH WOLVES; winner of multiple Oscars.
