The battle to be the Best Dice Game reaches its climax. Round One saw 134 games fight it out. In Round 4 the last 10 games threw down with 370 users voting.

I'm a big fan of dice in games. They add drama. They often add too much luck, but modern design has meant that it isn't a simple matter of whoever-rolls-the-most-6s-wins. A lot of great dice games have been published in the last few years and there have been a slew of awesome PnP dice games too.

This contest is about Dice games, rather than just games with Dice in them. In BGG terminology it is Dice as a Category rather than Dice as a Mechanic. These are games where Dice make up the core part of the game. It has been suggested that the difference is the level of choice there is about how to use the dice.

Round one and the nominations and discussion thread saw some discussion about what were and weren't Dice Games. There were some polls to determine whether some of them should be in the contest or not, where if it wasn't a clear result then they were allowed in.

The voting process is simple. Rate as a Dice game all the games you have played and then upgrade a single game in each bracket from "Awesome" to "Best". If you don't have an "Awesome" in the bracket you won't have a "Best".
The average rating for each game will determine a shortlist for the next round, will a threshold on the minimum number of votes required to progress.

So what happened in the last round? The main measure used for qualification for this round was Average Rating. To calculate this points were awarded for each rating: Best (4), Awesome (3), Great (2), Good (1), Okay (0), Bad (-1), Not a Dice game (-1). I don't publish the results of the average ratings to retain some mystery to the contest.

Dice Game Purists vs. Liberals
Last round we explored this with an excessive number of polls about whether the games were dice games or not. There were three games in the Top Twenty that got more 'no' votes than yes ones.

The purest dice games were:
Liar's Dice
Can't Stop
Ra: The Dice Game
Las Vegas

Anything else was voted less than pure by several people. These were the next most pure:

Roll Through the Ages
King of Tokyo
Dice Town
Escape: The Curse of the Temple
Alea Iacta Est

Because of the disagreement about whether certain games are actually dice games or not, I'm going to split the results of this list into two sets of results. For one I'm going to follow the same method that has been used up till now ("Not a Dice Game" vote = -1) but I'm going to run separate finals and rundown based on re-working all of the votes on a Purist basis, where "Not a Dice Game" vote= -10. This won't result in a just Pure Dice game rundown, but it will be weighted a lot more towards the Purist view.

Top 10 by Most 'Best' Votes:

1 King of Tokyo
2 The Castles of Burgundy
3 Can't Stop
4 Alien Frontiers
5 Stone Age
6 Liar's Dice (Perudo)
7 Escape: The Curse of the Temple
8 Kingsburg
9 Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age
10 Troyes

This list is a straight count of the games getting the most 'Best' ratings in the last round.

Most 'Bad' Votes in the Top 10

17 Escape: The Curse of the Temple
13 King of Tokyo
11 Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age
11 Liar's Dice (Perudo)
10 Stone Age
10 Troyes
10 Kingsburg

This list is a straight count of the shows getting the most 'Bad' ratings in the last round.
King of Tokyo defies this by making the Final.

Most 'Not a Dice Game' Votes in the Top 10

53 Stone Age
25 The Castles of Burgundy
18 Troyes
12 Kingsburg
9 Alien Frontiers

This is the number of "Not a Dice Game" votes for each of these games.

Top 10 Most Rated (aka Most Well Known)

1 Stone Age
2 King of Tokyo
3 Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age
4 Liar's Dice (Perudo)
5 Can't Stop
6 Kingsburg
7 Alien Frontiers
8 The Castles of Burgundy
9 Escape: The Curse of the Temple
10 Troyes

How well known the games are doesn't align much with the finals.

I'm splitting the finals into Purist & Liberal and I'll produce two sets of results, with a completely re-worked Purist rundown.

The Dice Game Liberal Final. These four games are scoring very similar averages, so potentially there will be a Final Final after this...

The Best Dice Game Purist Final. Taking the purist route makes things a lot simpler, with only two games tangling for the top spot.

The Best Dice Game Purist 3rd-6th place play-off. Alien Frontiers got a few 'not a dice game' votes. It sneaks into this play-off on the strength of the other votes. "Not a Dice Game" option included to allow venting.

Last round I asked people to assess what % of a dice game a list of games were. Here are the average results of that poll.

98% Can't Stop
87% King of Tokyo
77% Backgammon
70% Formula D
65% Kingsburg
62% Alien Frontiers
61% Yspahan
58% Lords of Vegas
53% Troyes
53% Risk
49% Manila
48% The Castles of Burgundy
43% Stone Age
43% Seasons
41% Memoir '44

Good to see our top two most pure dice games are the ones fighting it out in the Purist Dice Game final!
A shame to see Backgammon up there, which went out too early in the contest with a lot of 'not a dice game' votes.
Risk, which didn't even get into the contest saw quite high 'dice game' percentage. For me that was the right decision. The negotiation/diplomacy, tactical positioning and luck-pushing elements are much bigger than the fact that lots of dice are rolled.
Interesting to see Memoir sitting at the bottom of the rankings, justifying the group decision not to include wargames in the contest.

Overall I've got to say this has been an interesting ride. I didn't expect so much debate about what is and isn't a dice game. We've seen campaigning from one side to make it a more purist contest, removing hybrids like Seasons, Stone Age and Castles from it. And from another side we've seen comments pushing for the inclusion of games where there is lots of dice rolling to determine the results of actions, like wargames.

It feels like we struck a decent balance between the two, with the 'Not a Dice Game' option being available to let the Purists make their feelings known, while not opening the contest to a vast array of games that have dice in them. But I'm interested to see how the majority feel.

Poll
Was the scope of the contest the correct one?
Yes, it was just right
No, it was too liberal in its definition, allowing in too many not dice games
No, it was too liberal, but splitting the results by purist/liberal fixes that for me
No, it was too purist, and games like Risk, Memoir and Descent should have been included
Who cares, it was fun
I just don't know
