A list for those ad hoc rules in games that seem strange and out of place. The types of rules that cause my gaming friends to raise an eyebrow when I try to explain them. It would be great to see the stories behind these rules, if anyone knows.

I love this game, but the rules surrounding Birkenhead make no sense at all. The "canal that isn't really a canal" between Birkenhead and Liverpool has inevitably misled new players in most of the games I've played, and even the friend of mine who owns the game wasn't clear on how it worked. I have never told anyone that you can never have 4 ships in a port. The rules are bloated enough without this exception that directly conflicts with the supply rules. I have never seen anyone even try to put 4 ships in a port. I can't imagine any reason why this rule should exist.

New pastures have to be orthogonally adjacent to existing pastures. The same for fields. You have to really screw up your farm planning for this to matter.

So apparently if you want to decide to arm wrestle or do rock-paper-scissors to see who gets to play their card first, before resorting to turn order, you may do so.
