Exactly what it says on the tin...

Games you bought or played and really didn't like to start with (either immediately or after a fey plays)... but now love playing.

I don't own that many games that fall into this category (as my wife and I really try to do our research first), but I'd love to hear about your games that do

This is a reversal of one of my other Geeklists...http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/163221/games-you-loved...

Here's one to kick us off...

I was really hyped about this game, ordered it, read the rules, had a play through and was thoroughly underwhelmed... the rules were poorly written and very clunky and although the minis looked great, it just didn't seem to work.

It had a couple of plays and then got shoved back in the cupboard... then one day, I decided to dig it out again... I read through the rules and checked out the rules page here on BGG and all of a sudden the game just clicked... it became this light, fun, hack and slash, kind of a dungeon crawler but more of just an excuse to hack monsters or heroes to pieces (depending on whether you were the DM or the heroes).

I now really enjoy when I can get this game to the table.

I think this clicked with me on the third play. Play 1 I barely understood the rules, and grouped all my forces on Meketol. I had a huge force and the faction that acts early. Maybe I wasn't winning for points but I felt secure. Then a friend played that one card that allows his warsun to just nuke everything on meketol in one shot. That turned me off for a long time. At play 3 I finally got a feel for all the rules and expansion elements we use, and it started singing like the sweet lady it is.

I don't know why, but I was excited to get this game, when I did, I read the rules and we played a game. I could not have been more bored.

It sat for a year... maybe two... then my wife wanted to try it out. We got four players and tried again...boom, it just clicked. We play this often enough and I still enjoy it now.

The first time I played Power Grid, it seemed like a pointless, interminable slog, joyless round after joyless round. But now it's one of my all-time favorites. What made the difference? Several things:

1. The second time I played with fewer than six people.

2. I got someone who was better at explaining games and who had a modicum of patience with the n00b.

3. I started playing with poker chips instead of money—speeds up the game a lot if you have a skilled banker.

Really hated this. Didn't know what I was doing at all and got destroyed. Each game got better and recently was able to get in on the kickstarter. Love it!

I first played this vs. Keldon's AI on the computer, and I just didn't get it. What's so good about Consuming and Producing?

It wasn't until I later played it in person that the game really clicked for me. Now it's in my Top 5 games. I think actually seeing the cards physically moved around and handled by other human players made the game's system much more apparent and "scrutable."

This used to make my head hurt with its inanity. Now it's a staple of my boardgame classes. The cure for rummy-induced boredom is playing with non-gamers.

Initially, it felt like the mid game was too long, and the end game didn't come soon enough the first couple of plays. Now, time is tight while trying to feed, build and ship in such a limited number of turns. This game clicked after about a half dozen plays, and now it's great fun.

My first three or four games of this made me want to play anything else, and I would've easily given it up if not for my friends' persistance. Now, after years of weekend BSG-ing and close to 200 face to face games played, I think it's one of the most enjoyable board game experiences out there.

I didn't really "get" it on my first playthrough. But then again all of my 2+ guys got eaten. Now I think the bluffing, cutthroat, and psychological aspects of this game are really fun.
