This October, I'm challenging myself to play a game EVERY DAY of the month.

My birthday is in October and for the last several years, I tend to fall into a slump in the weeks leading up to it. Whether it's from feeling homesick for my family whom I live far from, missing Fall weather (SoCal does not have a real Fall), disliking getting older, regretting not completing a number of goals I've set for myself, or a combination of the above, I struggle more and more each year in the weeks leading up to it. I mentioned this trend to a friend, who suggested I try playing a game every day of my birthday month to hopefully offset the sadness I'm feeling with joy from playing a great game. I mentioned this suggestion to my wife, who also has an October birthday, and she loved the idea. We've dubbed the challenge: 31 Days of Gaming.

So now in the final weeks of September, we are prepping for our 31 Days of Gaming with a mix of our favorite games as well as games that have been on our To Play list for awhile - the list is comprised of both long and short games to accommodate a busy work week and a more open weekend as well as games that can be played over lunch since we work at the same company and are fortunate to be able to have lunch together.

As the month goes on, I'll update with games we've been playing, what days they were played, add any games not on this list that got played, as well as share how the challenge is going.

Games we are prioritizing:
d10-1
Shadows of Brimstonethumbsup
d10-2
Legendary Marvel Deck Building thumbsup
d10-3
Time Stories thumbsup
d10-4
Scythe
d10-5Folklore
d10-6Agents of Smersh thumbsup
d10-7
Mythos Tales thumbsup
d10-8
Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective: The Thames Murders & Other Cases
d10-9Watson & Holmes
d10-0Arkham Horror thumbsup (sort of)

Games that are go-to fillers for busy days:
d10-1
Carcassonne thumbsup
d10-2Flip City thumbsup
d10-3
7 Wonders Duel

(not picture 7 Wonders Duel & Folklore - that's still in the mail)

I'd love to hear from you guys any thoughts, words of encouragement, or suggestions for any games in our collection that you would think we should try to play for the challenge. Thanks

*Update* (10/15)

So far I’ve noticed gaming nearly every day has greatly improved my mood - esp given that on top of a month that is usually challenging for me any given year, we’re dealing with the stress of the mold clean up, not having access to our kitchen or laundry room, getting over being sick, and rushing one of our pets to urgent care (she’s ok but the vet is still trying to narrow down what’s going on with her.) So even though it’s been a more stressful than normal October, I’m dealing surprisingly well this month and I think it has to do with the daily games.

*Update* (11/1)

Plays so far:

October 1 - T.I.M.E. Stories
October 2 - Dominion Prosperity/Intrigue
October 3 - Carcassonne South Seas
October 4 - 7 Wonders

October 28 - Shadows of Brimstone, Derelict Ship Mission 3 (part 2)
October 29 - Shadows of Brimstone, Derelict Ship Mission 4
October 30 - Shadows of Brimstone (town)
October 31 - no game

*need to play a couple extra games to make up for my sick days

*Update* (10/24)
Folklore arrived!

KDM arrived!

Not sure if we’re get to either this month, but they are options as we finish out the month.

*Update* (11/1)
Overall I think this was a successful challenge, we missed several days but played 30/31 games total for the month

September 30*

Even though this wasn't played during the 31 days of October, I wanted to include it since we haven't played it since Jan 2015 and we probably won't play it again in October. It was a good warm up to our 31 Day Challenge.

9/15 - In past years October has been a month where we always play Arkham, but with our growing collection, it's been pushed more to the side... I do still love the game and would like to find a place for it in the 31 days.

*Not technically part of the 31 Days since it's meant to be during October only.

Update:

October 1
This was the first game we played for our 31 Days of Gaming. We finished, but with not as high of a score as I would have liked.
Here is a non-spoiler pic:

Spoiler (click to reveal)
I'm usually pretty good at mystery solving type games, but my instincts were off almost the entire game. I thought it'd be a good idea to talk to and spend 5 time on the weirdo dancing guy with a plunger and then later to waste a lot of time (and die) at location 14. I was the one to "crack" the code, though wasted a lot of time obsessing where the instructions were... right under my nose, dummy! Must do better on the expansions.

9/15 - Been dying to play this, so want to prioritize it for October. We have the first 4 expansions as well, so will try to get to those as well.

Our game today was Dominion Prosperity with Intrigue. We played with "Lucky Seven" and included Colonies and Platinum.

We had to call the game before it was officially ended because we were playing during our lunch hour at work. Prob had another 15min left of the game, but we tallied the scores and they were pretty close (44 to 38).

Here is a pic from today's game

We're going to be setting up tomorrow's game tonight, so it's ready to go when we get home from work - we have cats, so our Duchess Boardgame Table allows us to pre-setup without worry that the cats will play with the pieces while we are gone.

Today's game was 7 Wonders. One of my co-workers wanted to play a game at lunch, so she wrangled a few others and I introduced them to 7 Wonders. Was a lot of fun to play and I'm happy they liked it as it means 1 more game we can play together.

October 5

I woke up this morning - Oct 6 - and realized we didn't play a game yesterday. Barely into the challenge and we messed up! How could this happen?

First the excuses:

Excuse 1

A couple days ago we found out that the unit adjoining ours has mold, so our landlords wanted to inspect our unit, on the adjoining wall, to see if it spread to ours. The mold guys came and sure enough, found mold in our pantry. They asked us to clear out the pantry and the bottom shelves of the cabinet next to it and that once they set up, the entire kitchen will be sealed off. So we spent Wed night shuffling kitchen and pantry items into our living room and dining room. We pushed the dining room table away from the kitchen, so the mold guys would have room to move our fridge into the dining room, so we could have access to it... so our dining room and living room are a bit of a disaster right now. And actually, the first thought my wife had when they told us to move everything was, "oh no! our 31 days of gaming!"

The mold guys were supposed to come yesterday morning, but were late so we rescheduled for this morning. I'm hoping once the fridge is moved and we know whether or not they'll use the full breakfast counter to seal the kitchen off or if we have access to part of it, we'll be able to shuffle things around and (hopefully) clear off the dining room table to play games.

I had brought several of our small games that I had at work home last night, intending to play one of them, but by the time we cleared off enough room on the table for our plates and ate... I completely forgot about the games.

Excuse 2

I was also a little distracted because our friend invited us over tomorrow (today) after work to play games, but said the group might be larger than our usual group of 6, and knowing we only have a couple games that play 8-10 (Formula D and 6 nimmt), I suggested to my wife that we stop at the comic shop on our way home and just look around. We did and there we saw they had a copy of Ladies & Gentlemen, a game I've played several times, but never saw the need to buy because it didn't fit our game groups needs (we recently moved from LA to south OC and our regular group there was 4-5 players). Anyway, so I thought it'd be a perfect game to bring over in case more than 6 people come to game night...

... which is why I think I forgot to PLAY a game last night, I was busy punching chits and sorting components...

Now without excuses:

... Anyway I feel bad that I missed a day, but the challenge was to combat the sad feelings I have during this month, and buying a board game is almost as much fun as playing one, so kind of counts? Okay, I know it doesn't... but we'll probably play at least 2 games tonight, I hope, so it'll sort of make up for it.

Overall playing games (almost) daily has seemed to make a big difference in my mood, so it seems the challenge is working.

Last night we introduced our friends to Jamaica and Ladies & Gentlemen

Both went over really well, though Ladies & Gentlemen was the stand out of the night as many said it's their favorite game we've played together so far.

We also played a speed game of Dominion: Intrigue during our somewhat shortened lunch. So 3 games in 1 day, not bad, not bad at all.

We managed to play base Intrigue within 30 min, which was amazing because usually we have to call the game early and get back to work.
My wife bought the first province of the game, but I had a good run of cards and managed to nab 5 of the 8 and won the game.
Before this week, I hadn't played Dominion in almost 2 years, I had forgotten how much I like the game and am glad we're finally playing it again.

The first game of the evening was Jamaica. I started off pretty confident, nabbing the first then second treasures of the game... that first treasure card was a curse and I think it was actually cursed because since picking it up, my great start quickly turned sour and I struggled through the rest of the game. I tried pawning my curse off to others, but lost in battle and instead of getting rid of the bad treasure, I lost the good one I had... the game only got worse and worse for me. I had barely any money, any food by the end... but I was full up on Gun Powder, ready for the next battle... which never came.
One of the new players to the game ended up getting only good treasures, avoided all conflict, and was the first to 15. She blew the rest of us out of the water winning nearly 30 points more than any of the rest.

After Jamaica, it was starting to get late, but I convinced the group they had to play Ladies & Gentlemen. We fumbled through explaining the rules (I had only played, not read the rulebook - my wife is the rulebook reader and she hadn't had a chance to finish going through it...) Anyway, so we started off a little rough, but after the first round, everyone had a rough idea how the game worked and from there, the silliness and roleplaying began! We had decided to not pair with our real life spouses in the game, which was fun and probably a good call. My lady in the game got REALLY into her character and we ended up being the loud British and bickering couple the whole game up until the end, when I managed to buy her some extremely nice items. Before that though, I was a deadbeat cheapskate.

My wife and her gentlemen had a rough start as well, but remained pleasant to each other, like the poor couple who put each other before material wants. Up until the last round, my real-life wife did not have a dress, but instead of (jokingly) calling her Gentleman cheap like my Lady did me (all in good fun), she encouraged her Gentleman and finally he (though a she in real life) came through at the end and bought my real-life wife the nicest and most expensive dress in the game.

The third pair started off well and did well throughout. The Gentleman was my Lady's real life husband and he was unhumanly good at flipping and pulling resources. He filled some of the best contracts and never finished 3rd. It wasn't a blow out victory for them though and the final score ended up being very close - within 2-3 points of each other! We would have tied with them had he not fulfilled a contract that had a 3 star bonus on it.

The game was filled with non-stop laughter, ridiculous British accents, and so much tomfoolery that it's sure to get to the table again and soon!

We played 7 Wonders at lunch with friends. I played as Petra, the other wonders were Babylon, Ephesos, Olympia, and Gizah. It was a very close game! I tried science for the first time and barely won by 1 point. Babylon & Ephesos tied for second, though Ephesos had more gold, so they nabbed the 2nd place.

I really enjoy midday gaming, helps refresh the brain.

Forgot to take a picture during the game (we were trying to get through our turns quickly because two of the players had 2pm meetings), so here is the app's score screenshot:

Finally fed up waiting for the disaster that is currently our apartment to be finished to get back to our routine (still no kitchen or laundry room because of the mold cleaning), so we said screw it, and we just moved everything that was on the table off the table to random nooks where we could fit things, and pulled the cover off the Duchess gaming table, and played Pandemic Legacy - the game that’s been trapped in the table since they started the mold fiasco.

The month we played was September and the non-spoiler version: we lost - we were 1 action short of meeting our 3rd Objective, gah.

Now the spoilery version:
Spoiler (click to reveal)
The game was going really well up until we found the paranoid soldier.
The Medic Lincoln and Scientist Raven were busy traveling around the globe treating and curing. While the Colonel Monty and Quarantine Specialist Octavia (all our characters are named after the 100 characters) searched for the paranoid soldier while clearing out faded figures and quarantining the region. Then, finding the paranoid soldier, we discovered my awesome Colonel, who had the paramilitary escort skill, was a traitor and the game quickly went south from there. We blew up 1 military base, but fortunately realized we were going to lose before destroying another (no point destroying 2 if we have to destroy two new ones in our next game). On Octavia's turn, she had 4 yellow cards, but had no way to get a fifth and there weren't enough cards in the draw deck for her to have another turn. We had already cured blue & black, so we just needed yellow. We plotted out her actions and we always needed 1 more action to do it. If she could have cured yellow, then on Lincoln's turn, he would have destroyed the 2nd base and we would have won... It seems like we always just barely win or barely lose in the game and this game was no exception.
Also I'd like to add that playing as a civilian after having a beefy character like the Colonel was tough. Not sure who to pick in our next September game - maybe the Virologist Lexa because she's one of the few characters who can remove faded figures.

Those operation cards make a big difference. We managed to eradicate yellow finally so added an upgrade to it, was the only one we hadn’t ever eradicated.
Game was still incredibly close - literally would have lost if we didn’t manage to complete the last objective. We waited to blow up bases until we could tell we were going to win, but waiting almost got us killed. Oof.

Played as the virologist, but only used her power twice.

10/15 - Started our new campaign. First mission was Basic Mission 2: Exploration. We won a good chunk of $$$, though none of us really got any gear. I’m hoping we get the Gambling Hall in town, so my Gambler can... well, gamble.

Update: No Gambling Hall, but my Gambler was able to gamble and win some money in the Saloon.

Second mission started off well, played Basic 3: Void Gates, but the epic threat at the end spawned an extra 2 medium and 2 low threats, so the map tile was filled with stranglers, spiders, rats, and tentacles... we held out for awhile, but eventually all KO’d and be ause we failed - no town step. I think we’re going to play A Few Darkstone to recoup a little next game.

Using proxies for the unpainted heroes (Cowboy, Samurai, and Gambler)

Final battle in second game

10/14 - We're setting up for this tonight to start our campaign tomorrow.

9/15 - This has been a favorite of ours since first getting it back in 2014. It's a perfect theme for October and since we recently got the rest of Wave 2, we've been anxious to get this to the table. We're hoping to play this several times in the 31 days, with specific goals to play through a series of 6 missions in one of the newest expansions we've received.

The most likely one we'll play is Derelict Ship - we're nearly done painting it and it's one of my favorite themed expansions.

The new heroes we are most excited to play are Dark Stone Shaman, Jargono Native, and Cowboy, so those will most likely be the heroes in our next campaign.

Continued our Shadows of Brimstone campaign - jumped back to Basic Mission 1 after our crushing loss yesterday. Tonight’s game went much smoother, though we had to pause mid-game for time since I have to get into work early tomorrow.

So far we’ve been getting attacked with manageable threats and drawing some nice loot (lots of cash and gear).

Since Saloon Girl leveled and got Spinning Kick, she is kicking serious ass! Gambler and her are racking in the XP and are halfway to Level 3 already. Poor Cowboy is lagging behind, but only beacuse the 3 Initiative 5 characters kill everything before she has a chance.

I think as long as we make it out of this mission without any more injuries, we could start Derelict Ship next.

Finished A Few Darkstone more tonight. Saloon Girl & Cowgirl were near death, but survived the fight. An encounter card had come out that made movement very slow and they had gotten further ahead of the Samurai and the Gambler when the end game triggered. Samurai was nearly worthless in the final battle, he managed to kill two spiders near him, but because of the slow movement tile, he couldn’t get close enough to the Goliath. Luckily the Gambler was able to land some shots and since the Saloon Girl was close enough to spin kick, she was able to do quite a bit of damage (though took a fair share as well).

After winning, we survived through some travel hazards and went to a large town. The Gambler spent two turns gambling and scored some big wins - enough to buy a cheater’s pistol and recruit some allies. Cowgirl and Samurai bought a darkstone grip, so their attacks will have more dice, plus with the Samurai’s butcher’s knife special will hopefully do more damage coupled with his katana. Saloon Girl geared up on badages and Saloon Girl specific items like perfume and shivs, so I think we are ready for the Derelict ship.

Started the Derelict Ship expansion - we almost finished Mission 1 Echo’s Time, we’re paused during the final battle because it started getting too late. We probably have less than 30min left to finish, so we'll prob finish it tonight (Thursday) or Friday then we’ll be on to town for shopping and gambling (esp gambling).

Overall it was a somewhat unusual mission, we spent the first several turns just walking to the time portal, then several more walking to the doorways to explore. Our ally dog helps expedite the exploration process since he moves quickly and can look through doors. One of the first exploration tokens was a clue, but it didn't trigger any kind of attack. We hadn't fought anything until the second clue triggered the end game. The final battle is our ONLY fight this mission.

My Gambler *did* mutate a Chest Portal though, so mid-fight after rolling an 11 on Hold Back the Darkness, 4 Tentacles popped out of her chest adding to the enemy count. Luckily we were able to kill them all before they activated. The initial epic card was 2 elite threat cards. We drew our level and got D3 Dark Stone Brutes (3 came out), 6 scourge rats, and a rat's nest. The mission specifics also gave all of them another elite ability. The rat's nest pumped out a couple rats every turn and because of it's location and elite skill, we haven't been able to attack it at all. Once we get the Brutes taken care of, we'll head to the nest (hopefully no more enemies pop out of the Gambler's chest!)

(We cheated a little with map placement - we should have redrawn the tile Saloon Girl discovered because it slightly overlaps, but ally Dog triggered the end game, with his exploration, so we left it. It was basically an unused tile anyway.)

10/19 - Played at lunch with friends! We didn't finish, but had an awesome partial game.

9/15 - One of my all time favorite games and it's a perfect length for after work plays. Plus I recently got a couple new expansions that I haven't tried out - Fantastic Four and Fear Itself - and am excited to get them to the table. I also recently got Legendary X-Men and since it's my favorite of the expansions, it'll probably also see some play.

Played Mythos Tales at my surprise birthday party!

Spoiler (click to reveal)
Played Investigation 1. Didn't look at the questions ahead of time (different than SH:CD). Traveled to 10 locations, got 22 points of questions correctly (just some bottom ones that we didn't know - Unvisited Isle, Graveyard, but from the looks of the answers, they were tangents anyway) and scored 19pts total (22 mins 3 locations over 7), which means we scored in the highest bracket and got to look at the bonus section in Investigator Two.

All in all we had a lot of fun. My friends got really into reading the sections, we put on our best characterizations and had each other laughing all night! Games with a lot of theme, character, and story work well with my friends .

Also - the extra Brimstone game on Sunday and the extra game on my birthday means that I "made up" the missing games from my sick days finally.

Played the town phase, Derelict Mission 2, and traveled to town again today. Set up for Mission 3.

All our posse got to level 3 and have gotten some useful items.

Mission 2 started off with an ambush attack, but we quickly handled the threat and started on our way.

We got traveled to the Derelict Ship, but once we found the 1st clue, our tracker moved up a couple spaces, into the second stage, and darkess moved up another couple as well.

Luckily we found the second clue in the next encounter token, but because our Mule had been losing sanity, my Samurai headed back to him to give him some whiskey, when the rest of the group was surrounded by beasts and demons.

It took the Samurai awhile to get close enough to help, but luckily our other characters were holding their own.

We finally managed to kill all the enemies, but by that time, the darkness on the depth track was in the third stage and my Hold Back the Darkness rolls were not helping.

The encounter room was a big tile, so took some of the characters 2 turns before they could start rolling their test on the Objective tile to try to set the DS charges... We managed to get 5 placed, but needed 8 because of our posse size, when darkness escaped and we lost.

For town, we decided to travel to a large town since failing the mission meant we'd lose 3 buildings. We didn't get a Gambling Hall, but we got a Saloon, so my Gambler was able to walk away with some extra $$$.

We also got an Indian Trading Post, so 3 of us got Spirit Animals (Samurai got the Beaver, Gambler got the Crow and Saloon Girl got the Eagle.)

Mission 3 is set up in the table, so hopefully we'll continue our campaign this week.

My wife planned a surprise gaming birthday party at Gamehaus, where 6 of our friends joined us for games for the day. The first game we played was The Adventurers, which I hadn't played in years. Was a fun "warm up" game.

Surpise birthday game day with friends at Game Haus! We played The Adventurers: Temple of Chac & Agents of Smersh.

9/15 - A game we haven't played nearly enough, but one we both love. We recently ordered the ks extras from 8th Summit's website and are excited to try out some new UN Characters and play through the Scenario book.
