OK slight change of tactics here. Rather than finding one game that is moderately beloved amongst our whole group, I've opted for one that I know we have all played or rated. (Joe, I didn't know for sure you had, but taking a chance.) Once I found that game, then I wanted us to take a deep dive and pick this game apart.

For all of the items below, please offer your opinion to how this game does/doesn't work or is good/bad/so-so in those categories. Also please feel free to compare and contrast to other games that you think do things better in that respect, or where this game clearly outshines others.

PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

This is the GCL: Eclipse Division discussion list for the week of Sept 22, 2013. Please visit the GCL: Eclipse Wiki for information on this Game Chat League.

Visitors are welcome to post so long as comments maintain a friendly, non-confrontational, and applicable nature to the GCL Eclipse discussion. If you are interested in becoming a regularly-contributing member, please make a request to me.

Thank you for respecting these guidelines in our home of regular discussion. We hope the conversation created here is rich, informative, and most of all, fun for members and nonmembers alike.

The game up for discussion will be DOMINION. You've played it. Some of you love it. Some of you hate it. Some think it's OK but over-rated. Let's find out why!

No real need for comments on this item. Unless you can find other games we've all played that you wished I'd chosen instead.

First let's talk about the rules. Do they make sense? How easy is it for new players to pick up? Are there rules you wish were included, or house rules you always institute?

What about the box and insert? Is it appropriate? Is the insert more trouble than it's worth? Anyone use a completely different box?

Now the components - which pretty much are just cards for this particular game. Good quality? Readable? Would you pay more for thicker stock or a different finish?

Now how about longevity. What do you think contributes to this game still being popular 5 years after it was released? Will it still be as popular in another 5 years? Has the explosion of deck-building games diminished the future potential for Dominion? Did winning the SdJ help or hurt its future?

Lastly because it's been a hot topic for us lately, let's save some time to talk about those expansions. Are they necessary for this game? Which ones shine, and which ones suck? Are any of the promo cards a home run? And are there any expansions that you just can't see yourself playing without when you have Dominion on the table?

The Week that Was....

Games Played:

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Rise of the Runelords – Base Set -- still enjoying this very much. There is not a ton of game here, but with the campaign going and who I am playing with, it is fun. I will continue with the adventure these guys. It is not for everyone, but it scratches a small RPG itch.

Farmerama -- got this in a Math Trade recently, and my wife and I played it. It is not bad. It took us a bit to wrap our head around the rules (as translated), but it is a quicker, lighter version of Agricola with a dash of Ore et Labora. I am not sure what my wife thought as she was struggling with the dial. She had played far more complicated games, so it may have just been an off night.

Advanced Squad Leader -- played live via VASL with a local-ish player. Lots of fun as usual, and we plan to play again after Essen.

PBEM:

Advanced Squad Leader -- one game in the starting stages.
Battle Above the Clouds -- in the midst of a slow-going learning game (my fault).
Bloody April, 1917: Air War Over Arras, France -- going to be staring this one very soon.

Acquisitions:

The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game – The Black Riders

Highlights of games played 9/24-9/30:

Race for the Galaxy x3 (Joe-0=1315): While I no longer play this nearly as much as I once did, my plays do seem to come in clumps - and I'm definitely still very much enjoying it.

Filthy Rich (Joe-0=10): This play wasn't ideal - the dice punished one player badly - but it's a fun little game, and one of my favorites from Garfield prior to King of Tokyo.

Bridge x2 (Joe-0=1980): We've been able to keep the game going by recruiting new players - but now we're pushing the new players to take the next step forward.

Cul-de-Sac (Joe-0=1): First play of this, with my younger son; it's not the kind of game that sticks in my collection, but more one of those I enjoy a couple or three plays of.

Beat Detroit (Joe-0=1): Had fun playing it, but the game has big issues (such as the start over space - if players keep hitting it, the game can go on _forever_, at least in theory; perhaps also in Detroit).

A Brief History of the World (Joe-0=17 - though note that I count all versions of the game together): I've played this more in 2013 than in any previous year, and I'm enjoying it more and more. My rating ticked up to a 9.

Louis XIV (Joe-0=24): I really like this game, but it didn't go over spectacularly, and I seem to have more trouble than I'd expect getting it to the table.

Sternenhimmel (Joe-0=17): Fun game, which in contrast to Louis XIV I never seem to have trouble getting played. Given that I've owned it longer and played it fewer times, I suspect this is purely a perception issue...

Games played from 2013-09-10 to 2013-10-02:

Why such an odd date range? Well, it's from the last time I wrote about my plays in this GCL until today

Magic: The Gathering: 15 plays in 1 session

I was at one of those midnight prerelease tournament thingies. Lots of fun, even though I didn't know what the heck I was doing. I somehow managed to get midfield, place 18 out of 32, right in line with what I barely dared to hope - not sucking completely zombie

The card to the right was the super-special promo thingaling I got to play. It was neat, shouting RELEASE THE KRAKEN! every so often.

I was there with a friend, and arranged with him that he'd get all my cards after the tournament. I don't want no Magic cards ninja

Android: Netrunner: 11 plays in 7 sessions

All of those were against the very same opponent - the one coworker I have suckered into playing this thing. He's getting better and better; he actually beat me this Tuesday.

I improved my NBN deck after that and beat him four times on Wednesday and Friday, but still - that makes two nearly regular opponents now, how awesome is that!

I told my FLGS to let me know as soon as they have copies of the English core set again, I'll go there with him immediately when that's the case and bribe him into buying one

I actually had typed the above before the session of yesterday and stored it in a text file, but: Yesterday he used a Gatman deck of mine and beat me and my Jinteki work compression deck handily, twice Looks like a deck that consists of all the cards that everybody keeps saying are powerful actually looks to be strong, too

Tally Ho!: 5 plays in 2 sessions

Remember the review of this one last week? I told my wife about it, and she requested to play. Twice, actually. Well, in fact, we're about to play it again right now. When she enjoys a game, she really does

Wiz-War (eighth edition): 4 plays in 1 session

Thanks Dave for telling me to get this; that was a very good idea. My brother and I had a very enjoyable session of this, as can easily be seen by us not stopping after one or even two or three plays, but four of them - after it was way past midnight in the middle of the week already. A lovely little luckfest of a game, with smashing comboes going back and forth.

I spent almost the entirety of one game locked away behind a wall and still like the game, that's really telling something surprise

Recent Acquisitions:

None. However, I got rid of over 40 games (about 10 of them expansions) that I figured I wouldn't play again any time soon - meaning, not in the next couple of years at least. My collection has grown to a slightly un-manageable size, so I'm happy to have sold (for very cheap) nearly a sixth of it.

The games I sold are all in my movements GeekList, starting with this item.

I haven't posted my games played recently - so here goes.

Napoleon: The Waterloo Campaign, 1815 = I kickstarted the 4th ed. which is a good throw back to the AH edition I've played before.
A good introductory block wargame, plays quickly but gives you quite a bit of strategic options. It does a good job of capturing the fell of the historical situation without a lot of overhead.
It has a combination of operational movement, where I liked the concept of limited group moves to represent command control and the limitations forced by the road net. Then there is the tactical battle board which can be a real crap shoot as you watch you best laid plans go astray

I really enjoyed seeing the angst of my opponent - he would start to make a move, pause then think about another, pause then go back to a first group... We played 2 games the allies won both, one salvaged on the battle board, the other when time ran out.

Dominion: Intrigue - Takes the basic Dominion efficiency engine, and adds a modicum of interaction cards to mess with the opponents.
At least with the cards that offered both victory points and efficiency actions, and mess with player events there were somethings to make a decision.
However it is Dominion after all, you are still building your repetitive engine, it still doesn't interest me. I can't remember where I came in in the game I played

Boss Monster: The Dungeon Building Card Game - A card building dungeon crawl. You build a set of rooms, trying to get enough kill points and card combos to prevent the opposing heroes from having enough points to penetrate your lair. You have to trade off attracting the adventurers, having counter cards (spells) and rooms to inflict damage.
While you get rooms as part of the turn, getting the spells was a result of card play.
It was ok but didn't really do much for me. I wasn't much into classic video games so the theme is lost on me.

Yedo - An enjoyable worker placement game. While a longer game, it keeps you involved.
I liked the combination of auction and placement to accomplish your goals. By watching the player order, you can pretty well what you will be able to do. The locations on the board acquire permanent items, and are needed for the temporary locations required to accomplish missions. More workers and items can be acquired via action which may be the most cost effective way. We didn't trade much which is something we overlooked.
The missions are in 4 categories for easiest to hardest. The easy missions generally reward you with improvements, the harder add victory points as well.

I was in the middle of the pact. The winner destroyed us by getting a nice chain of missions strung together.

Maria - Had enjoyable game, especially since I was able to sneak the Pragmatic Army (aka Dutch/British) to a well deserved victory. Austria and France were pushing each other very hard. My Prussians were making their contribution until I thought that it was time to give Austria a respite, and traded time for Silesia. For the Pragmatics I had 2 armies on the offensive and 1 on the defensive in Germany that let me capture enough fortresses by the early 1743 (the 10th turn).

Silverton - Thanks to Chester I had to get this on the table with my wife with the Golden spike 2 player scenario. We even used the train and snowplows (a first for her), which she may do again since she beat me.

Portraits

The Bottle Imp
Emu Ranchers
Galaxy Trucker

It was a slow week for me but I did have one highlight. Portraits is a game that I had to go on a hunt for. It was referenced on the wiki page for Adaman as inspiration and I was curious about it. The designer was listed, James Kyle, but the game wasn't in the database. I did internet searches and checked pagat.com but couldn't find anything. I ended up getting in touch with the designer through BGG and he emailed me the rules as well as gave permission to upload them here.

Interestingly, Adaman is nearly identical to Portraits with the obvious exception that Adaman uses a Decktet. There are only a few minor rules changes. However, I think Adaman improves the game by quite a bit. It decreases the luck factor and makes your resources more tricky to use. In Portraits you are always attempting to collect high cards so each card in your resource row is worth exactly what it says. In Adaman the cards you want are spread out among the ranks so a 9 in your resource row might need to be spent to collect a 6 or a 3. This makes the decision on how to be efficient more interesting.

In any case it was a fun hunt. The Bottle Imp was fun again (played with 4) and I'm looking forward to camping next week. It will be the 4 of us that played TBI and I'm hoping we can play it a bunch more.

Plays:

Android: Netrunner x8 - I've been trying to start a league on Sundays and have finally gotten 3 people to attend. I played 8 games, won 8 games. Guess my tourney decks for the Unplugged Tour are ready.

Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game x1 - This time I decided to try out the Lambda Shuttle and Tie Bomber, with great success. They're tough ships to fly well due to their poor manuverability, but very powerful if you play well.

Battle Beyond Space x1 - It's taken me until this, my 6th play, to really grasp how to play well. A big part of it is your initial setup. Another large part is realizing that you don't need all three of your squadrons to play well. Two of us didn't move our third until the end and we were within one point of each other in 1st and 2nd place.

Suburbia x1 - Speaking of close finishes, the final scores were 91, 91, 90. Still really enjoying this.

Love Letter x3 - Many of our finishes are now quite close, with our last being 4, 3, 3. What a simply marvelous game. I need to try it with the modified 7 next time to see what difference that makes.

So sadly I've not gotten much gaming in lately. Life intrudes so rudely sometimes!
I did manage to score a Grail and Scalino.
I'm not even entirely sure we were playing Scalino correctly but it is an addictive little abstract. We played with 4 and played 5 or 6 games in a row.
Each player takes a color and must place one of their tiles a 6-1x1, 3-2x1 and 3-3x1 on the board. You must place adjacently and you cannot place next to one of your own tiles. Also a piece cannot be placed if it would cause a square on the board to be surrounded by pieces on three sides no matter the color.
You may not build on the next level unless the previous is complete.
You score by the number of connected steps you have in the pyramid.
The rules for placement make the game quite a challenge. It was very easy to end the game on the first level with no legal plays . To get to the second level means the players must cooperate somewhat to finish the first.

oh and the Grail you ask?
Lines of Action with the nice wood box-absolutely unnecessary to play the game but so satisfying to have it.

Games Played (9/22 - 9/28)

Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers x1
Evidently I was still signed up for the Yucata ladder league. I don't mind playing...these games don't take much time or attention in this setting. I think I'm a pretty mediocre player, but I find that it still keeps me interested. I don't feel inclined to put any effort into studying the game more since the luck of the tile draw seems to overwhelm skill at a certain point.

Indonesia x1
I'm trying to remember the last game like this where I KNEW I was a terrible player but still loved it. I felt that way with Planet Steam initially, but I caught on quickly. I get that feeling from a couple abstract games at times.

This was a 4p with 2 new players. I felt like I had a system that was working in the early game (and I believe that I truly did) but I failed to recognize how to leverage that into a good endgame score. I eventually got passed up pretty soundly. But it only makes me want to play again sooner.

Puerto Rico x1
We had a bit of a throw-back night with 5p games of this and Ra (see below). In both cases I really found the game to be preferable to a lot of the more recent Euro titles I've played recently. Puerto Rico is a game I never really felt I'd played out when it was at its peak popularity. Its always fun to get into a 5p face to face game.

Ra x1
Also a 5p game. This is a game I initially really loved (with all the tension of the draw bag) but have soured on recently. I just can't figure out where the fun went. The last 3 or so games felt clinical and lacked any sense of tension at all.

Well, this playing was a throwback to the early days. I found myself chanting, "Ra!" when we were wanting a player to 'bust' at the end of an epoch. I do believe this is one I should keep in my collection and pull out occasionally. Its not a masterpiece (though maybe it was when it had few peers) but its still a game that can provide some fun.

Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island x1
I had heard nothing about this. But I enjoy most cooperative games, and the theme sounded appealing. A local player suggested playing and taught 4 of us.

The theme holds up very well. I felt like we had some tricky choices, and it certainly felt like we were on the edge of disaster for a good chunk of the game. It turns out that we were doing the "easy" scenario, so I think there is a real challenge in there in terms of completing more difficult scenarios. This one went on my 'want' list immediately. I'm looking forward to the imminent reprint.

Its busy with lots of little bits, but the game play itself is not tricky. This one was a pleasant surprise.

Silverton x1
I completed one more solo scenario, this time using the advanced rules (snow plows and trains). They really aren't complicated to add in, and if I get a chance to play multiplayer that's how I'd teach it.

I really like Silverton. I recognize that there is some big luck in the game (at least with solo adventures) and I'm not sure how the competition for claims would feel in multiplayer games. I hope I get this on the table in the not too distant future.
