With less than a dozen players in attendance it felt positively quiet so an early suggestion by Kevin for this game was eagerly accepted by Paul who then press-ganged not having played before Iestyn and Dave into joining them.

What can I say about this game that hasn't been said elsewhere, it's with Terra Mystica and Tzolk'in as part of my top 3 so far of 2013.

It took Dave and Iestyn a couple of rounds, seems to be normal with this game, to get to grips with it but they'd done alright to that point so not too much had been lost though in hindsight Dave would probably have recruited a man and woman earlier in exchange for the building he'd done for 10 points and a fire action.

At the end of game just Kevin missed out on completing all of his tasks, only Iestyn collected Jewellry each round and he was also the only one to fill his building area. I put my victory down to knowing the game better - that early recruitment of men and women plus enough priests for a few extra God tokens was just about the difference.

With Dave disappearring after Bora Bora it was left to the other 3 of us to play this game, I think at Iestyn's prompting.

With the Isengard location out at the start, drawing 4 power cards and starting first seemed like an excellent advantage and I worked to strip the despairs from my hand rapidly. Another card allowing me to remove from hand or discard pile helped the process further and with manouvres that allowed me to draw extra I was soon powering along. I won on a tie-break from Kevin, the Balrog cost me a turn but not the game.

Ambush cards were thin on the ground and we certainly didn't meet a lot of enemy cards during the game allowing it to progress at a goodly pace.

Six of us settled down to play some 7 Wonders; John, Steve, Jam, myself, James and Johnny. I didn't see what was happening at the other end of the table but both James and Jam went for military as my neighbours and left me on -2 military points. Since I had the Hanging Gardens I went primarily for science and managed to get 31 points out of it but unfortuately picked up too little points elsewhere, coming 5th and only slightly ahead of new player Steve. I think Jam and John were next though I can't remember the exact placings and Johnny and James scored a joint first (maybe?).

The same six then played The Resistance: Avalon. John was the assassin, with Johnny as his minion (they were sitting right next to each other as well, shenanigans!) and Steve was Merlin.

I can't remember most of the game detail though I do remember not having a clue who was who! I'd worked out that John and Johnny were tied together, either both good or both bad but I couldn't figure out which. Fortunately Jam had a clear idea of who was who and both he and Merlin-Steve got to pick the final teams, the first of which was vetoed and the second of which had to be accepted otherwise the spies would win.

Once the good guys had won the third mission and John and Johnny were revealed, Assassin-John had one last chance to rain on our parade but Jam's confidence throughout the game managed to draw attention away from Steve and the assassin's dagger missed the target.

6 of us wondering what to play so out came 7 Wonders just in time for Steve to turn up and make it a full table. I sat between James and Bobby and went for a resource light strategy with Helicarnassus intending to mop up a few easy cards by building the Wonder, however with resources short both sides of me I had to resort to a mix of Science and Military, playing cards that were free or having to discard them for cash and only building the base level of the Wonder. It was just enough and I squeezed a win with Bobby almost outdoing me in Science second.

3 player El Grande isn't the best number of players but it's quick and for Bobby and Steve (aka Graham) a good introduction to what not to allow a more experienced player to get away with. Neither of them will make the same errors on another play or perhaps believe that I have 9 cubes in the tower, I only had 8 but it made a difference to where Steve played although it didn't change the outcome.

Six of us settled down to play vanilla Battlestar Galactica; Iestyn, Gaz, Jon, Johnny, Dave and myself. The first half was a real fight with us struggling for an hour to get our first jump, surrounded by enemy ships and already doing badly on resources. Our second jump was also messy with ships surrounding us, but by this halfway point we still hadn't any hints of Cylon play and grudgingly agreed that perhaps we were all human.

Everything changed during the half time oranges though. I drew the sympathizer card but fortunately as we already had two red resources I was merely thrown in the brig rather than turning toaster, but we now knew that we had two cylons at the table!

Thanks to some fortunate crisis card peeking we managed to avoid getting swarmed by enemy ships in the latter half of the game, which was incredibly fortunate given how pushed we all were. Gaz was thrown into the brig early and spent the entire remaining game there after Jon cast suspicion on him and the rest of the table followed his reasoning. Crisis cards had, by this point, totally drained our skill cards and we were having trouble passing them (Gaz had a full hand of cards but no-one trusted him enough to let him loose) so our resources started draining away and by the time we made our penultimate jump our food and morale were critical and population was down to 4.

We still hadn't seen a cylon but early in the final rounds we had a particularly nasty crisis we needed a skill check of 14 to avoid our dwindling resources dropping so the minimum. Johnny kindly threw in a card that forced everyone to submit skill cards face-up but one of our cylons thought it was worth revealing himself to fail the mission and with a cackle, Jon flipped his card. Despite his anti-skill cards we did manage to pass the check but it drained most of the cards from our hands once more, leaving us in a very vulnerable spot, with another cylon yet to reveal.

We limped through another few rounds, desperately trying to build up a hand of cards and continuing to bleed resources as we slowly crept up the jump track. When Jon's turn came around again he used his super crisis to give us a potentially fatal skill check of 17 but fortunately Engineer-Dave managed to neutralise Jon's anti-skill cards and we managed to stumble past another hurdle. When my turn came around I used an action card and Starbuck's power to dig through the crisis deck, desperately hoping for a jump track and fortunately found one on my final card. With four population, we could now jump to victory and the only other player outside of the brig was Iestyn, who was next. If Iestyn was human we could escape without letting the cylon play or risking another crisis! Of course he wasn't though, our president AND admiral had been a toaster for the latter half of the game and had been quietly burning through our useful quorum cards and making bad fleet decisions while accusing Johnny of being evil. Sneaky bastard ninja Johhny had suspected him for most of the game but couldn't convince enough of us to get him brigged yuk

We survived Iestyn's reveal and Gaz's turn came up. If we didn't end the game on Gaz's turn (who was in the brig) then Jon's turn would have given the cylons victory. Fortunately, having been in the brig for most of the game, Gaz had managed to build a hand of useful cards and played an executive action to move the ONLY human player not in the brig (yours truly!) to the flight deck where I slammed the Big Red Button to jump us home to victory! Alas three thousand humans died during the jump, but you can't make an omelette without breaking a few thousand eggs.

Super super close finish and had there been any cylon ships in the latter half of the game we'd have been pushed past breaking point I think. Both Jon and Iestyn had me fooled and while they did have their detractors, they managed to sow enough confusion to remain unbrigged for a big reveal. Three of the four humans were stuck in the brig and we couldn't get enough skill cards together to break anyone out, plus the only free human was a pilot so couldn't throw anything into leadership or political challenges.

Mark, Steve, Steve / Graham and I brought out this little marvel for our game while we waited for any last minute arrivals. Steve / Graham moved offshore early and built a city whilst the rest of us sat around on the mainline recruiting massive armies which eventually split out and made a good job of neutralising each other. Even though all of us eventually found our way to foreign shores it was Steve / Graham's early move that ensured he had a comfortable victory.

With Kevin joining us we now had 5 and Marks suggestion of Caylus was accepted. Kevin and Steve / Graham hadn't played before so while Mark sorted out coffees and teas I explained the rules with Steve filling in the gaps.

We got down to developing the castle and buildings along the road in good time and soon we were all joining in the advance, but as ever with this game life does not always progress smoothly and with Steve playing first, in the pub and sat on 3 good places far along the track and only me accompanying him there was a sudden reverse, very painful for me but not assisting would have made it much harder for the rest of us to catch him. The following turn we could have made life harder for Mark but I didn't feel I could take 2 losses in a row and didn't assist.

By now Mark and Kevin were beginning to control the game with myself and Steve catching up slowly but the game ends too quickly and Mark took the victory with a slew of favours and gold in the last round enabling him to build both a green and blue building leaving Kevin in 2nd.

6 players then regrouped and enjoyed this bluffing game. I was the first to score a point and then the bidding got more intense with Ash and Bobby losing cards as a result. Trish scored next and soon Joerg and Bobby also had a point. Steve wasn't losing cards but he wasn't winning bids either and now Joerg lost his cards closely followed by Ash. With 4 left in Bobby managed to score the final point he needed to win.
