This is my attempt in creating new expansion bugs for a boardgame that I have only discovered this year. I can't believe that Hive has been around for 13 years now and I wish i learned about it sooner. Well, I have developed a renewed interest in all abstract strategy games and that's how I discovered BGG and eventually, Hive. Before this I have been playing Chess, Abalone, Othello, Poker and other card games, with an occasional Mahjong and Monopoly. I've also been recently playing other board game apps on Android and iOS but none moreso than Hive. It has now been my favorite abstract strategy game, surprisingly surpassing Chess. I'm a big fan which incited me to create some graphics for the game pieces (see my gallery) and propose new expansion pieces that could add some new dimension in playing the game.

Anyway, there has been a number of creatures that I wanted to include in the Hive tabletop game. A few of them may already have been proposed before by other fans but I have my own take on them. I think that the Dragonfly is probably the closest to becoming an official Hive expansion piece, while the Moth is currently still being actively developed. Major criteria is that it has to be an arthropod to stick with the theme. They have not been playtested so I am not sure how they will interact with each and if there is going to be some conflict. That's why I need feedback. I may add one or two more later if I think of another movement idea or special ability that may have not been mentioned before. I want to hear your comments and will continue to edit/improve the language, tweak and constantly update it based on your suggestions and feedback. Thank you.

ASSASSIN BUG

Are generally known as Reduviids. Other species are called Ambush bugs, Thread-legged bugs, Wheel bugs, Conenose bugs, Kissing bugs or Masked Hunters. They have a rostrum which is a tube used for feeding and to deliver a painful bite. Predatory Assassin bugs use their long rostrum to inject a lethal saliva that liquefies the insides of the prey, which are then sucked out. The bloodsuckers (Triatomine bugs like the Conenose and Kissing bug) feed only on the blood of vertebrates. During blood feeding, their bites are hardly felt by their hosts.

Initial Placement: Next to a tile of the same color on ground level once all your pieces have been played

Movement: 1 field like the Queen Bee. It may move by rotating, which counts as a turn, to face an enemy piece and mimic that piece’s movement on the next turn. If the piece it is facing moved before it can mimic it, then it cannot move using that piece's movement.

Special Ability: Enemy pieces cannot move next to it. It can mimic the movement of an enemy piece that it is facing. Once it touches the enemy Queen Bee, it kills the Queen Bee and the game is won.

Interactions: Mosquito can copy the movement but not special abilities. Dragonfly can transport it. Pillbug can lift and temporarily immobilize it. Top-of-Hive pieces can block it..

Alternative creatures: Kissing Bug, Ambush Bug

VINEGAROON

Also known as Whip scorpion, Uropygid or Vinagrillo. An arachnid more closely related to Schizomids, Amblypygids, and Solifuges than Scorpions because it uses only six legs for walking, having modified its first two legs to serve as antennae-like sensory organs. All species also have very large scorpion-like pedipalps (pincers). Vinegaroons have no venom glands, but they have glands in their long whip-like tails that do not sting at all, however, it can spray a combination of acetic acid and octanoic acid when they are bothered. They are carnivorous, nocturnal hunters.

Initial Placement: Next to a tile of the same color on ground level.

Movement: 1 field like the Queen Bee. After it has moved one space it has the option to rotate in place as part of its movement. It may choose to move by just rotating in place for its subsequent turns.

Special Ability: Enemy pieces cannot pass/move or end their move next to its tail side. Has the option to rotate in its place and face an enemy piece in order to move that piece away by one field as long as it is legal to do so.

Interactions: Mosquito can copy the movement but not special abilities. Dragonfly can transport it. Pillbug can lift and temporarily immobilize it. Top-of-Hive pieces can block it.

Alternative creatures: Bombardier beetle, Firefly/Lightning Bug, Shield/Stink Bug, Whip Spider, Blister beetle

WATER STRIDER

Also called Magic bugs, Skimmers, Water scooters, Water skaters, Water skeeters, Water skippers, or Jesus bugs. These aquatic predators have a mouthpart, called a rsotrum, that evolved for piercing and sucking, and distinguish themselves by having the unique ability to walk on water. They are anatomically built to transfer their weight to be able to run on top of the water's surface. The shape of their legs and their light weight keep them from breaking through the surface. They have very good vision and move quickly on the water. The short front legs of a water strider are for grabbing prey. The middle legs push the insect forward, and the hind legs steer.

Initial Placement: Next to a tile of the same color on ground level.

Movement: It starts by climbing on top of Hive and travels through tiles of the same color of the piece it initially climbed on then ends its movement on the ground.

Movement Diagram: http://tinyurl.com/m37leyx

Special Ability: None

Interactions: Mosquito can copy the movement but not special abilities. Dragonfly can transport it. Pillbug can lift and temporarily immobilize it. Top-of-Hive pieces can block it.

Alternative creatures: Sea Skater/Halobate, Pond Skater, Water Scorpion (see Mayfly variant)

MAYFLY

Also called Shadflies, are aquatic insects whose immature stage (called "naiad" or, colloquially, "nymph") usually lasts one year in fresh water. Most species feed on algae or diatoms, but a few species are predatory. The winged adults are short-lived, from a few minutes to a few days. Mayflies have two adult stages. They first emerge from the water as duns (subimago stage). They then molt into the spinner (imago) stage, in which they mate and die. In some languages it is called a One-day fly. The primary function of the adult is reproduction. Adults do not feed, the mouthparts are vestigial, and the digestive system is filled with air.

Initial Placement: Next to a tile of the same color on ground level. It starts as a nymph (naiad)

Movement: It climbs on top of Hive and travels through tiles of its own color (friendly pieces) ending on the ground at the end of its movement. If it lands next to an opposite color (enemy) piece, it has the option to flip, which counts as a turn, and change itself into the adult Mayfly (spinner). It can then move on top of opposite color pieces ending on the ground at the end of its movement.

Special Ability: It can flip from naiad to spinner and vice-versa to increase its movement area and range but once it lands next to the enemy Queen Bee, it is immobilized (dies). It remobilizes (resurrects) itself if the Pillbug or Dragonfly (or any other piece) moves it away from the enemy Queen Bee.

Interactions: Mosquito can copy the movement but not special abilities but when it is next the Queen Bee it is considered inactive (dead) so the Mosquito has no power over it. Dragonfly can transport it. Pillbug can lift and temporarily immobilize it. Any piece that moves it away from the enemy Queen Bee while it is next to it, revives its mobility and special ability. Top-of-Hive pieces can block it.

Alternative creatures: Whirligig, Waterbug, Backswimmer, Water Boatman, Diving Beetle, Water Creeper (See Water Strider variant)

CRICKET

Is a nocturnal insect somewhat related to grasshoppers, and more closely related to katydids or bush crickets and weta. It has a somewhat flattened body and long antennae. The sound emitted by crickets is commonly referred to as chirping or stridulation. Crickets are omnivorous scavengers who feed on organic materials, including decaying plant material, fungi, and some seedling plants. Crickets eat their own dead when there are no other sources of food available, and exhibit predatorial behavior upon weakened, crippled crickets. Crickets have relatively powerful jaws, and several species have been known to bite humans.

Initial Placement: Next to a tile of the same color on ground level.

Movement: Hops over a tile, single or stacked, into an open space on the ground. It must hop over single tiles or single stacked tiles whenever available (like a Checker piece) but cannot land the same place where it began its move.

Movement Diagram: http://tinyurl.com/lenn5qk

Special Ability: None

Interactions: Mosquito can copy the movement. Dragonfly can transport it. Pillbug can lift and immobilize it. Top-of-Hive pieces can block it.

Alternative creatures: Fleahopper, Treehopper, Leafhopper, Springtail, Flea, Katydid, Froghopper/Spittlebug

ROBBER FLY

Also called Assassin fly, Asilid, Diogmite or Hanging-thief. It is a powerfully built, bristly fly with short, sharp, stout sucking mouthparts. The name "robber fly" reflects its notoriously aggressive predatory habits; It preys on formidable insects in fact practically anything of a suitable size apparently irrespective of any repugnatorial chemicals the prey may have at its disposal. It largely wait in ambush and catch their prey in flight. The fly attacks its prey by stabbing it with its short, strong proboscis injecting the victim with saliva containing neurotoxic and proteolytic enzymes which very rapidly paralyze the victim and soon digest the insides; the fly then sucks the liquefied material through the proboscis

Initial Placement: Next to a tile of the same color on ground level then it moves on top of the hive on its next move.

Movement: 1 field on top of the Hive. It may adapt the movement of the piece underneath by taking the piece with it. It never comes down the Hive.

Special Ability: Can take the piece underneath with it when it moves using that piece's movement. It pins the piece underneath.

Interactions: It has no movement of its own so the Mosquito cannot mimic it's movement. Mosquito cannot mimic its special ability. Dragonfly can transport it. Pillbug can lift and temporarily immobilize it. Top-of-Hive pieces can block it.

Alternative creatures: Snakefly, Crane fly/Mosquito hawk

SILVERFISH

Also known as Fishmoth, is a primitive wingless insect related to Firebrats and Bristletails. Its common name derives from the body’s iridescent light grey colour, combined with the fish-like appearance of its movements. They are flat insects with two long, slender antennae on the front and three long, slender "bristles" at the rear of a tapered, carrot-shaped body. Silverfish are most active at night and run very swiftly with a wiggling motion that resembles the swimming action of a fish. They live in damp, moist areas and will chew through virtually anything in a home that has sugar and starch content.

Initial Placement: Next to a tile of the same color on ground level.

Movement: Moves exactly 2 fields around or through the Hive

Special Ability: It has the option to swap places with any piece it is touching at the end of its move as long as the piece it is swapping places with does not break the Hive.

Interactions: Mosquito can copy the movement but not special abilities. Dragonfly can transport it. Pillbug can lift and temporarily immobilize it. Top-of-Hive pieces can block it.

Alternative creatures: Firebrat, Bristletail

BUTTERFLY

Is a diurnal insect that have four large, pigmented wings, covered with tiny scales, and conspicuous, fluttering flight. It has two antennae, two compound eyes, and a proboscis. It’s life cycle consists of four parts: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa and adult. Butterflies exhibit polymorphism, mimicry and aposematism. As adults, butterflies consume only liquids, mainly from flower nectar which are ingested by means of their proboscis. They use their antennae to sense the air for wind and scents.

Initial Placement: Next to a tile of the same color on ground level.

Movement: Initially moves on top of the Hive which counts as one turn. While on top, on it’s next turn it can travel at any range but only on top of same color pieces. It does not end its movement on the ground but it can drop down 1 field on ground level which counts as a turn. It can only move on top of the Hive.

Special Ability: None but pieces underneath it are not pinned. They can still move normally, carrying the Butterfly with them using their own movement.

Interactions: Mosquito can copy the movement but not special abilities. Dragonfly can transport it. Pillbug can lift and temporarily immobilize it. Top-of-Hive pieces can block it.

Alternative creatures: Housefly, Lacewing, Antlion/Spoonwing

WEEVIL

Also known as Snout Beetles, have prominent snouts (or bills) bearing the mouthpart. Weevils drill hole with their chewing mouthparts at the tip of their snout and do enormous damage to growing plants and stored grains. There is an antenna on each side of the snout. In a number of species, the snout is longer than the body, which seldom grows to half an inch (13 mm) in length. The snout is used not only for feeding but also for making cavities in which the eggs are laid in buds, fruits, seeds, stems, and roots of plants.

Initial Placement: Next to a tile of the same color on ground level.

Movement: Moves exactly 3 fields in a straight line: 2 on top of the Hive and 1 on the ground. It must ends it's movement on the ground in the same direction as it's initial movement unless it pushes a piece, then it may end its movement in any direction on the ground.

Special Ability: It can push off a piece on the Hive that is blocking its path in the same direction as its movement. It cannot push a stack. It can only push one piece at a time by one field and must end its 3 field movement on the ground. If it pushes a piece on the Hive, it can drop to the ground level in any direction.

Interactions: Mosquito can copy the movement but not special abilities. Dragonfly can transport it. Pillbug can lift and temporarily immobilize it. Top-of-Hive pieces can block it.

ROVE BEETLE

Many Rove beetles raise the end of their abdomen when disturbed (the Devil's Coach-horse being a classic example), This characteristic earns them the name of 'Cock tail' beetles. They are reputed to squirt a strong smelling vapour into the faces of their predators. They are scavengers and carnivorous, often found around decaying plant and animal matter. Despite having small elytra (wing cases), their long wings can be very quickly extended and they take flight surprisingly quickly. It is only when they are about to tuck their wings away again that one can see that the wings actually stretch all the way to the end of the abdomen.

Initial Placement: Next to a tile of the same color on ground level.

Movement: Moves 1 field around or on top of the Hive like the standard (Stag) Beetle. It can only climb one level. However, if it touches another piece on the Hive, on its next turn, it increases its movement range by pushing that piece on top of the Hive in a straight line until it drops to the ground level while itself ending on the ground at the opposite side of its starting movement. It may push any number of stacked pieces pushing all pieces to the ground in a straight line but must end its movement on the ground.

Special Ability: It can block (pin) a piece underneath while on top of the Hive like the Stag Beetle. It can push a piece or a stack of pieces off the Hive in a straight line. It can increase its movement range if it is next to another piece or stack of pieces on the Hive.

Interactions: Mosquito can copy the movement but not special ability. Dragonfly can transport it. Pillbug can lift and temporarily immobilize it. Top-of-Hive pieces can block it.

Alternative creatures: Rhino Beetle, Tiger Beetle, Horned Beetle

TUMBLEBUG

More commonly known as the Dung beetle. Another specie is called the Rainbow Scarab which has colorful iridescent body, mostly metallic green and copper. Tumbleugs feed partly or exclusively on feces. Many, known as Rollers, roll dung into round balls, which are used as a food source or brooding chambers. Others, known as Tunnelers, bury the dung wherever they find it. A third group, the Dwellers, neither roll nor burrow: they simply live in manure. Dung beetles are currently the only animal, other than humans, known to navigate and orient themselves using the Milky Way. One specie of Dung beetle navigates by using polarization patterns in moonlight. The Horned Dung beetle have been discovered to be strongest insect in the world. It could pull 1,141 times its own body weight.

Initial Placement: Next to a tile of the same color on ground level.

Movement: It moves exactly 2 fields on the ground. It may climb on top of a piece at the end of its movement but only if it started its move from the ground. It cannot move atop the Hive. It must come down the Hive to continue its 2 movement field on the next turn, otherwise it can move by dragging the tile underneath along with it by one field.

Special Ability: Pins the piece underneath like the standard Stag Beetle. It can drag the same piece underneath along with it by one field.

Interactions: Mosquito can copy the movement but not special abilities. Dragonfly can transport it. Pillbug can lift and temporarily immobilize it. Top-of-Hive pieces can block it.

Alternative creatures: Preying Mantis, Mantispid, Dobsonfly

COCKROACH

Cockroaches are mainly nocturnal and will run away when exposed to light, an exception is the Asian cockroach, which is attracted to light. The spines on the legs help in locomotion on difficult terrain. Cockroaches leave chemical trails in their feces, as well as emitting airborne pheromones for swarming and mating. These chemical trails transmit bacteria onto surfaces. Cockroaches are generalized insects, with few special adaptations. They are among the hardiest insects. Some species are capable of remaining active for a month without food and are able to survive on limited resources. Some can go without air for 45 minutes. They can recover from being submerged underwater for half an hour. Cockroaches have the ability to withstand extreme radiation exposure.

Initial Placement: Next to a tile of the same color on ground level.

Movement: It moves around tiles of same color but stops as soon as it touches opposite color tile and vice-versa.

Special Ability: None

Interactions: Mosquito can copy the movement but not special abilities. Dragonfly can transport it. Pillbug can lift and temporarily immobilize it. Top-of-Hive pieces can block it.

Alternative creatures: Earwig, Termite

JUMPING SPIDER

Most Jumping Spiders, also known as Salticids, are active diurnal hunters and have some of the best vision among invertebrates. Though they normally move quietly and fairly slowly, most species are capable of very agile jumps, notably when hunting, but sometimes in response to sudden threats. Their well-developed internal hydraulic system extends their limbs by altering the pressure of body fluid within them. This enables the spiders to jump without having large muscular legs like a grasshopper. Most can jump several times the length of their bodies. When a Jumper is moving from place to place, and especially just before it jumps, it tethers a filament of silk (or 'dragline') to whatever it is standing on to protect itself if the jump should fail.

Initial Placement: Next to a tile of the same color on ground level.

Movement: It moves exactly 3 fields jumping over 1 tile at any point of its movement (start, middle or end) to any empty space on the ground, however, it can jump on any Spider and/or end its movement on top of any Spider to change its movement. It must finish its movement on the ground unless it is landing on top of a Spider. It can only jump over a tile on the ground level. It cannot jump over stacked tiles unless it is on the same level (perched on top of a Spider).

While on top of a Spider, it can only move by dragging the Spider underneath it by a maximum of 3 spaces, otherwise, it must jump over a single tile or stacked tile on the same level and land on the ground.

Movement Diagram: http://tinyurl.com/kroen2m

Special Ability: It pins friendly and enemy Spiders by climbing on top of them or landing on top of them when it jumps. While on top of a Spider it can only move around the Hive by a maximum of 3 spaces while dragging the tile underneath along with it. It can only leave the Spider underneath with a jumping move.

Interactions: Mosquito can copy the movement but not special abilities (it can pin but not drag a Spider beneath it). Dragonfly can transport it. Pillbug can lift and temporarily immobilize it. Top-of-Hive pieces can block it.

Alternative creatures: Daddy Longlegs, Harvestman, Crab Spider

CENTIPEDE (2)

Centipedes are are predominantly carnivorous and among the largest terrestrial invertebrate predators. They are elongated metameric creatures with one pair of legs per body segment. The number of legs vary from under 20 to over 300. A key trait of a Centipede is a pair of venom claws called forcipules .The forcipules are modifications of the first pair of legs, forming a pincer-like appendage always found just behind the head. Forcipules are not true mouthparts, although they are used in the capture of prey items, injecting venom and holding onto captured prey. Venom glands run through a tube almost to the tip of each forcipule

Initial Placement: Both tiles placed at the same time next to a piece of the same color on the ground level.

Movement: Only one tile can move at a time. It moves exactly 2 fields: 1st up the Hive (on top of the other piece) then back down the Hive. A piece can only climb on top of the other piece and not on other tiles. They must always be connected when moving so they cannot be separated.

Special Ability: With its 2-tile design and nature of its movement, it is able to fill in spaces that restrict other pieces that move around the Hive to move into, i.e. a gate that is formed between two pieces.

Interactions: By design, the Mosquito have no power over it, i.e. it is physically impossible for Mosquito to replicate its 2-tile movement. The Dragonfly however can only transport one piece (part) at a time and the Centipede piece being transported is reconnected adjacent to the other piece. Same with the Pillbug, it can only move one part of the Centipede and the part being moved is reconnected adjacent to the Centipede's other part (Rule of Thumb: The Centipede pieces cannot be split by other pieces unless they are reconnected on the same turn). Top-of-Hive pieces can block it (i.e. it cannot move any of its part if a Beetle is on top of one of them).

Alternative creatures: Cicada (swarm), Walking Stick, (see Millipede variant)

MILLIPEDE (3)

The Millipede's most obvious feature is its large number of legs. Having very many short legs makes millipedes rather slow, but they are powerful burrowers. With their legs and body length moving in a wavelike pattern, so they easily force their way underground head first. They also seem to have some engineering ability, reinforcing the tunnel by rearranging the particles around it. Their bodies have segmented sections which makes them move in a wave-like form. Due to their lack of speed and their inability to bite or sting, Millipedes' primary defence mechanism is to curl into a tight coil – protecting their delicate legs inside an armoured body exterior. Many species also emit malodorous and poisonous liquid secretions or hydrogen cyanide gas through microscopic pores called odoriferous glands along the sides of their bodies as a secondary defence.

Initial Placement: All 3 tiles placed at the same time stacked on top of each other next to the Queen Bee of the same color on ground level

Movement: All 3 tiles move together in sequence or in tandem and must not break their link. Tiles on top move down to the ground but all three tiles must be connected. Tiles move on top of each other on its subsequent move. These movements alternate between turns. Tiles cannot be placed on the Hive but they can drop down into a gateway as long as they are connected.

Special Ability: With its 3-tile design and nature of its movement, it is able to fill in spaces that restrict other pieces that move around the Hive to move into, i.e. a gate that is formed between two pieces.

Interactions: By design, the Mosquito have no power over it, i.e. it is physically impossible for Mosquito to replicate its 3-tile movement. The Dragonfly however can only transport one piece (part) at a time but only if it's not stacked together and the Millipede piece being transported is reconnected adjacent to one of its components. Same with the Pillbug, it can only move one part of the Millipede and may only do so if it's not stacked together and the part being moved is reconnected adjacent to the Millipede's other parts (Rule of Thumb: The Millipede pieces cannot be split by other pieces unless they are reconnected on the same turn). Top-of-Hive pieces can block it.

Alternative creatures: Cicada (swarm), Walking Stick, (see Centipede variant)

WARRIOR BUG (ALIEN QUADRUPED)

Warrior bugs are quadrupeds. The rearmost pairs of legs are much longer than the two front forelegs, and serve as the primary locomotion, the forelegs being about a third shorter. Warrior bugs are quite agile and fast, they can climb and burrow if needed but would rather use tunnels made by burrowing bugs. They can also use their hind legs to leap a short distance. These Bugs utilize a powerful pincer-like mandible that is capable of crushing its victim, as well as severing limbs as a means of attack. The two sharp and pointy upper forelegs or "side mandibles" are utilized for stabbing and slashing in attacking prey as well as for defense.

Initial Placement: Next to a tile of the same color on ground level. It can only come into play once all the standard pieces (Queen Bee, Ant, Grasshopper, Beetle, Spider) have been played.

Movement: It has two movement patterns depending on the situation. If it is next to a friendly piece, it must move one field and hop over 1 tile. If it is next to an enemy piece, it must hop over 1 tile and move one field. If it’s next to both friendly and enemy pieces, it may utilize both movements. It may hop over stacked tiles.

Special Ability: Any enemy piece that it hopped over is flipped face down and becomes immobilized. The piece is remobilized (flipped face up) if it hops over it again on its next turn, or the enemy Warrior Bug hops over it, however, the opponent's Warrior bug cannot flip a piece that was just flipped by your Warrior bug. Likewise, the Warrior bug cannot flip a piece that was just flipped by your opponent's Warrior bug. If it hops over a stacked tile, the top post piece is flipper over.

Interactions: Mosquito can copy the movement but not special abilities. The Mosquito cannot mimic tiles that have been flipped face down by the Warrior bug. Dragonfly can transport it including flipped tiles. Pillbug can lift and immobilize it including flipped tiles. Top-of-Hive pieces can block it.

Alternative creatures: Alien Hexapod, Mole/Jerusalem Cricket

And the coup de grace!

MUDFLAP MAN

Around middle-aged or older. Hairy and husky, bearded and burly. Usually wears a wifebeater top and pajama bottoms or white boxer shorts made of 100% cotton and an occasional baseball cap. Watches TV or porn at home all day in his favorite barcalounger, while drinking beer, eating junk food and pleasuring himself to completion at the same time. Quite messy.

Initial Placement: Played by smashing it on the tabletop on top of enemy Queen Bee while blurting out BAM!!

Movement: None

Special Ability: Game ends abruptly once it is played. Man stomps and crushes Hive, destroys all creatures and renders the game unplayable.

Restrictions: Playable only if one wants to immediately win and quit at the same time.

Interactions: Frustration and relief.

Alternative creatures: Mother Nature, God
