First, a little background. A couple of months ago, My wife and I decided that we would celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary with a trip to Canada. Neither of us had been before, although it had been on our wish-list for some time. We did the usual googling of things to do before I hit upon the idea of asking the Ontario Geeks for advice. The response was overwhelming and this list is my way of saying Thank You to everyone who contributed.

We arrived in Toronto airport on Thursday evening. It was a bit late to do anything other than pick up a hire car and get lost trying to get out of Toronto Airport. After travelling north for a few miles we finally managed to get on the right road and headed south to Niagara where we spent our first night. I know Canada is big, and I'd planned for some long drives, but it's still surprised me (as a Brit) just how far apart these places are.

The next morning saw us stroll out of our hotel and down to the Niagara Falls. Wow. This is a really impressive sight; all the more so from the Maid in the Mist boat tour. However, they seem to have stopped the barrel rides these days. That's a shame!
After getting completely soaked, we had a snack and drove up to Niagara on the Lake; a very pretty town, well preserved and well worth the visit.

who posted in the original thread and invitied my wife and I to stay with him and his family for a night. We weren't sure whether to accept or not, after all we didn't know each other, but he insisted so we accepted.
We were really glad that we did. We were shown outstanding hospitality and made to feel very welcome by his whole family.

In the morning we left and paid a visit to St. Jacobs where we had a flavour of Mennonite life. Unfortunately, the Farmers Market had burned down recently, but we were still able to appreciate Mennonite home cooking at the Stone Crock in town.

After St. Jacobs, we headed into Toronto and the reason why we were coming to Canada in the first place. My wife is a big fan of Les Miserables, so when I was looking for something special for our 25th Wedding Anniversary, I searched for tickets to the show. It was playing in London at the time, but I thought it would be nice to go somewhere different and when I discovered it was just opening in Toronto, that clinched it.
I had only seen the film before, so wasn't that much of a fan, but I am now. If you get a chance to see the stage show, take it. It'll blow your socks off.

The next day, we had two things we wanted to do. The first of these was going up the CN Tower. I'm not a big fan of heights (if you have acrophobia, you know what I mean) but this was something that had to be done. The views from the top are amazing (even standing a little back from the glass). I even walked round the outside (the caged part, not the open wear-a-harness part!) and looked down the glass floor (but didn't stand on it!). In fact we enjoyed the views so much, we booked a table for dinner later that evening in the rotating restaurant. It's a bit expensive, but we had some money put aside for an extra-special treat and used that. Well worth it. But I'm jumping ahead of myself...

The other thing I wanted to do whilst on this side of the water was go to a baseball game. I'd never seen baseball (except in film clips) but it seemed like the thing to do. As it happened, our visit coincided with the last week of the regular season and a Blue Jays home game (against the Tampa Bay Rays). Not being sure if we'd like it and stay for the whole match, I got us cheap seats way up at the back.
We were lucky in sitting next to a bunch of guys who were only too happy to talk us through what was going on and soon picked up the basics. Unfortunately for the Blue Jays, they had a disastrous first inning and quickly went 6-0 down. However, rather than sitting through a boring formality of a huge defeat, they fought themselves back into the game and (in my opinion) were unluck to eventually lose 7-6 in a thriller of a finish. By the end of the game, even my wife had become a fan, so it must have been good!

After Toronto, we had booked a few days at the other end of Lake Ontario in Kingston. We visited the Lake on the Mountain on the way through, which is a very picturesque place and well worth the detour. Whilst we enjoyed every place we visited, I think Kingston was the best. The town is simply wonderful. Here we took a boat tour around the Thousand Islands, and if I ever win the lottery several weeks running, then this is the place I want to come to. However, that seems unlikely, so we made do with enjoying the scenery from the boat. The colours on the trees were just starting to turn and the whole effect was beautiful.

After the boat tour, we immediately took a hop-on hop-off bus tour of the town. Now clearly this sort of ride is going to show off the best and most interesting parts of any place, but in Kingston they do have some good material to play with. My only regret is that Fort Henry had just shut down the weekend before, so we didn't get to look around that properly.

The following day we took a drive up to Upper Canada Village, another recommendation from the original thread. This is a reconstructed village set in the 1860s, with all original buildings that have been moved from their various original locations to form a typical village of that time. The people dress in period costume and carry out genuine trades. For example, they grind their own flour in the mill, bake their own bread and grow vegetables. There is a blacksmith, a tinsmith and a furniture maker. It's all fascinating stuff and well worth a visit if you gat the opportunity.

That evening, we then booked ourselves on a Haunted Walk tour of the city. It was advertised as family-friendly, so I was reasonably sure I wouldn't get too frightened This was extremely well done and rather than being falsely spooky, was instead a more fun and informative tour about reported ghost sightings and ancient burial sites.
This was going very well until our guide stopped outside the B&B where we were staying...
Apparently there was a story connected with that old house, but as I grew a sudden interest in the garden, my shoelaces and a brick wall, I didn't hear any of it. surprise

After Kingston, our final destination was Collingwood. On the way there we took another detour and stopped off at Midland to visit the Huronia Museum. There is a recreation of a Huron Settlement from the 1600s there and it was interesting to compare and contrast their way of life with that of the European settlers.
Then we drove along the lake-side road to Collingwood and were very surprised at the difference between Price Edward County where all the lakeside houses had room around them, and the houses on the edge of Georgian Bay, where they were all crammed together, fighting for space.

Whilst in Collingwood, we had planned to visit the Fathom Five park, up at Tobermory, but decided we'd driven enough the previous day. Instead we took a look around some of the waterfalls in the area, visited the Blue Mountain resort and watched Meaford's Invasion of the Scarecrows, a fun procession where the children all dressed up as something or other - I couldn't quite make it out...

Eventually our time in Canada started to run out, so on our last day we headed back to Toronto and visited one attraction that we'd missed earlier - Casa Loma.
This is a splendid turn of the (20th) century mansion which would have overlooked the old city of Toronto, but now sits in the middle, surrounded by more modern buildings. It was the dream home of the Canadian businessman Sir Henry Pellat and is preserved as a monument to him. The rooms all contain period furniture and there is a very good (free) audio tour that describes both the building and Sir Henry's rise and fall. Again, as with just about everything else we did, this is well worth a visit.

So that's that. Thanks to the ideas and suggestions provided by the geeks of Ontario, my wife and I had a very busy but entertaining and fun packed 10 days. We drove over 1800km and got a taste of several different parts of the province, each with their own flavour. If it looks like I'm making food-related statements, that's because we ate so much! Apart from the first night, and our stay with David, we stayed at B&Bs the rest of the time (another BGG suggestion) which was an inspired decision. The hosts (and indeed everyone we met) were all very welcoming and friendly and the food was delicious. (for any Brit readers, contrast this with the stereotypical view of the British seaside B&B...).

If you don't already live in this wonderful province, then I heartily recommend visiting for as long a holiday as you can manage. It's a beautiful place with very welcoming and friendly people.

Postscript.
Just when I thought things couldn't get any more amazing, the flight home took us just south of my home town. It's usually pretty cloudy over England at this time of year, but as we approached the river Severn, the clouds parted and I could see my town, the field at the top of our road and then MY HOUSE! I could see MY HOUSE from the airplane! How cool was that!

My wife was less impressed, but then she was trying to watch a film at the time...
