So this weekend was like any other weekend. My town had an awesome outdoor festival with great food and activities, I went to the Boston Aquarium, I wandered a local food showcase/market. I got the see Paul and Storm vs. Wil Wheaton in concert at the Hard Rock.

It was, one could say, an amazing weekend.

My folks were a few states north of me in Vermont for the Weekend. my dad was taking part in a bicycle race up a mountain in Stow Vt.

Everything kind of crashed down monday morning though.

Rather than make their return drive to Maryland, my parents went to the emergency room. My dad wasnt feeling well. a few tests and some bloodwork later, they were moving him by ambulance to a larger hospital with a better Cardiac Unit.

My dad had suffered a heart attack.

He is alright now. theyre keeping him for a few days to monitor him. and he will be leaving the hospital with a stint and a few presecriptions. it was worse than they initially thought, but he is resiliant, and it was no where near as bad as it couldve been.

I never played too many games with my dad. But I wanted to make this list to honor him as I keep him in my thoughts. And I thought it would help me to share what a great guy he is as I sit and wait to hear more about his recovery.

To those who would like to add to this list, share some of your memories with your dad, or, if you are a dad, share what you hope your kids will remember.

Sorting through some yardsale material as I kid I stumbled upon an old Red Box. Not a boardgame/RPG fan at the time, it meant nothing to me and walked its way to the thrift shop in the sky. But it gave me a bit of insight into how much of a nerd my dad was, and how much of a geek I would become.

My dad is the reason im the Geek I am today. Mostly because of him passing on a copy of the Hobbit (and LotR) to me at an early age when I thought reading was dumb.

took me years to figure out reading was fun. but These books will stay with me forever.

That and all the Old Ralph Bakshi films I watched with him. And Heavy Metal. Good memories.

I played this way back when I was a kid. My brother & I were big into a lot of the Avalon Hill games back then. Never could get my dad interested in any board games.

Of course he'd been there & done that, he served in North Africa during WWII and then in the Pacific after that. He's in his late nineties now and healthy as an ox thank goodness.

I used to play a couple of the crayon Rail games with my son when he was growing up (He's in his twenties now). A lot of Empire Builder and Eurorails. He especially liked Eurorails.

I got a call from him earlier this week. He's going to be flying into Boston in December for vacation. So we'll have a chance to hang out & play some board games. I picked up a used copy of Lunar Rails a while back and I'm looking forward to giving it a play with him. It should be fun.

Glad your dad is doing okay.

My dad, mom, sisters and I used to play this a lot. When we were young they let us look up words in the dictionary so we could figure out plays. I didn't know you weren't allowed to do that until college. I learned to spell playing this game.

I picked this because he was a great trash talker during Scrabble. Whenever he was ahead or won, I'd hear - "Why are you losing to me, English isn't even my first language." or "Why am I sending you to college if you can't even beat me at this - I didn't go to college." or some such.

Good times.

Back in the early 70s, when I was a kid, my dad and I would lay down on the carpet in front of the tv and play bocce with my marbles. He always ruthlessly "cheated" by playing the pallino over on his side of the room, and I can remember my mom telling him to let me win sometimes. But win or lose, I loved to play with him.

Thanks for sharing your memories with your dad.

I remember I used to play Master Mind and Checkers with my dad as a kid. However, we stopped gaming during my teens.

Recently, we got back into boardgaming with my dad and family. We have introduced a number of games to him such as Dou Dizhu, Love Letter, Tichu, Alhambra etc. His favourite is Dou Dizhu. He enjoy being the landlord and is a risk taker. However, we noticed that recently he has learnt from his mistake and is more conservative in his bidding for the landlord.

I always enjoy and cherish the time we spent together gaming as a family.

I've been playing games for as long as I can remember. Traditional card games, Yahtzee, Monopoly, all the traditional stuff. My parents both liked games so they would often sit down with me and my sister to play games.

Years later, when I had picked up this 'German games' bug (oh, and a girlfriend laugh ) when I would visit them, we would usually bring a few games to play with them in the evenings.
Two games were clear favourites: Res Publica was the first favourite, later Ticket to Ride took over the top spot.

Three years ago, my dad was diagnosed with cancer. A few months later, he died.

My mother is still living in the same house and we still bring games along when we go there, but the gaming doesn't feel quite the same (partially because these particular games are less fun with only three, partially just because I miss the presence of my dad).
On the other hand, my own kids are now old enough to join in the gaming so during the daytime we often play with five.

Thanks for this geeklist, and I hope your dad has a speedy recovery.
To all the Dads out there: thank you for all you've been to us.

My dad died in a work accident when I was 14. So I could never really play any boad game with him, not even a game of Monopoly (not really a loss here).

But he did teach me poker. I couldn't sit at the table during family gathering until I was 16 (and I'm pretty sure they took pity of me and let me play) but thanks to him I was pretty good at this.

I still miss him everyday, even after 17 years. I wish my kids could have met him and see how awesome he was.

I have to add this and the next one, though. These were Dad's pride and joy. As kids he'd never let us play them without beinig there, since we really just wanted to play with the ships in this and the planes in Dogfight. When I was older, he actually showed us how to play. Pretty great game, although it's virtually impossible for the English to win. IMO, at least.

We have some EPIC battles... one time I was near the end and going to count first. His only chance to win was to come from behind by pegging 12 points, and he did it! Great time. My father was never one much for gaming. He was a good guy and would help out every now and then by sitting in if we really needed a player, but never showed much interest in games of any kind.

When I was just starting my descent into boardgames my second big purchase (after Catan) was Puerto Rico. I brought it home, read the rules and set up a game to try with my mother and girlfriend of the time.

As a matter of courtesy he was asked if he'd like to join in; I fully expected him to decline but to my surprise he got up from watching the cricket and agreed to play with us. He didn't seem to be paying too much attention as I explained the rules and as he kept glancing over at the now muted television to follow the progress of the match I didn't expect him to come anything other than stone motherless last, but good on him for making an effort.

Anyway, the game progressed and finally we ran out of victory point chips and that was that. In the counting up at the end I thought I was doing pretty well and announced my score, whatever it was, and he calmly turned in towards the table giving us what looked like his full attention for the first time since he sat down to join us and quoted a number five or six higher than whatever I had said.

I counted his points out and he was correct and took the honours easily. He then thanked us for the game and put the kettle on as we packed the game away.

I asked him how he did it but he was pretty non-committal about the whole thing.

Next time we tried it he was again invited to play but he really surprised me when he declined and I don't think he ever played Puerto Rico again.

I don't know what it was, whether that one game was enough for him or whether he didn't want to risk breaking his 'hoodoo' or what, but that was enough Puerto Rico for him. I asked him about it on several occasions, but never got anything remotely resembling a satisfactory answer out of him.

Maybe it's no bad thing for a father to have a little bit of mystery about them now and then.
