We've now been in this hobby for just over a year and thoroughly enjoy it. It's been wonderful finding something that we both enjoy this much. But, for a reason we can not quite figure out, we have been having a real hard time playing games. Sure, we will spend hours surfing the 'geek and we'll spend lots of time together perusing upcoming games @ Essen and such, but, we're not spending a lot of time playing our great library of games. Well, outside of the two game days/nights with our game group each week, that is. So we've decided to change that.

Our goal (and feel free to join in!) is to play at least 1 game each day, for the next 100 days. There will be days that we 'cheat' and only play Blokus or San Juan or Jaipur, but, hopefully, the majority will have a bit more meat to them.

On top of that, we vow that, since we have so many games of ours unplayed (getting as big a collection as we have in a year tends to leave you with a plethora of unplayed games), that at least 25% are games that are new to us.

Good luck to us and get gaming, people!

This will be #1 right after we finish dinner!

Amanda not feeling the best, but she was excited to finally use her new shiny dice from GenCon. We randomly selected boards and got started. I led early thanks to some 1 building regions and really never looked back...but it wasn't a blow out. Thanks to final scoring Amanda got to within 10.

Fun game that we both really enjoy and the extra championship boards and Spiele boards keep it fresh.

Great start to out challenge!

Day 2 and this one is new to us. We got it from a BGG Auction from a designer/user here at BGG who, I just learned, has recently passed away.

For a simple game, it has some interesting strategy. We got the card expansion as well, but just played the base game for tonight. While it was fun, I think the cards would definitely add to the game.

It was very contested and, thanks to my rabbit, I eked out a 1 point victory!

You'll see this one again, but with the cards next time.

Day #3 - So we thought we had game night w/ our group, as we do about 48 weeks out of the year, on Thursdays. Well, when we RSVP'd I didn't notice that it was for next week and nothing doing this week. Whoops!blush The good news is that the host, Chad, lives approximately 3 1/2 minutes away, so no harm.

The good news from not having game night w/ the group is it allowed us more time to learn a new game in our library and that was Freedom: The Underground Railroad.

I'm really not too keen on co-ops, but seeing as this was an Academy Games, Inc. game (publishers of the gorgeous Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear! (second edition)), I was excited to get it during the KS. We picked it up in person @ GenCon and finally found the time to it to the table.

Rules read through went pretty quickly, as did the setup. Amanda drew the Preacher and I drew the Shepherd. Once we got started, it seemed easy enough, but once you hit the 2nd time period, things look hopeless (at least they did for us). There was a serious logjam (slavejam?) not allowing us to move slaves out from plantations fast enough. In fact, things went south so quickly, that we thought about conceding defeat and calling it a learning game. Instead, we stuck it out and wanted to see just how badly we lost...and boy, are we glad we did.

Going into the 8th and final round, we still had 2 support tokens to get, 2 slaves to get up to the Great White North, and oh yeah, all the plantations were full to the brim w/ 6 more slaves slated to be shipped into those full plantations!surprisesoblueshake

But, by the grace of...well, something or someone somewhere, the cards fell perfectly and as we worked our way through the action phases, things started working out. We both had taken a fundraiser token and that allowed us enough money to buy both Support tokens (thanks to buying of a card each), I was able to move 2 slaves to the safety of the GWN, and Amanda cleared enough room in the plantations that only 2 slaves were lost and we came away with a ridiculous win! With 1 slave lost to spare!

But, man, I'm worn out. Talk about clutching a victory from the jaws of not only defeat, but from an absolute ass-kicking!

Looks like I found a co-op that I enjoy and will want to play again. Not all the time, mind you, but more than any other co-op that we've found thus far.

Day #5 - After enjoying the Ducks whooping up on the hated UW Dawgs, we thought we'd try this out after having gotten it at GenCon. We really enjoy Village, but this, we heard, adds a lot to the game (figuratively and literally).

Setup was easy and straight forward, as was the rules read through for Village Inn.

The iconography was well done and we really liked what all the game added. Neither of us could see a reason to ever play village w/o the expansion going forward. Well done here!

Oh and it was neck-and-neck and I squeaked out a 1 point victory. Hard to get a better, closer game than that!

Day #6 - A good friend of ours called last week and wanted to see if we wanted to try this out. We absolutely did, so we planned for Sunday and he and another buddy of his came over. I made scratch-made biscuits and gravy and after filling our bellies, we got down to setting up the game.

There is a ton of chrome in the game (hello FFG!), but it works well. Only Chuck had played it previously and then it was only 1 time, so we had 4 new players, essentially. We only had to reference the rulebook a few time and it was very slow going early, but we all loved the game.

No one went heavy military and 2 went for tech victories and the other two of us went for cultural victories. Since military was minor, it ended up coming down to the final turn and all 4 of us (Sumit, Chuck, Amanda, and myself) would win on that turn. Thanks to turn order and the order in which each turn happens, I won via culture. Chuck and Amanda would have won via tech and Sumit would have won via culture if he went before I did. Super tight game and we learned a lot and had a good discussion after the game on what we would have done differently and whatnot.

It's going to get played again, and soon, by all of us. All 4 of us enjoyed it more than we thought we would. Yay!

Day #10 - Well, the week didn't work out how we hoped, so not much gaming up til game night w/ our group. I think 14 folks showed up for our weekly weeknight game night, with close to that many coming for the all day gameday on Saturday.

4 of us sat down to play Bora Bora and I taught the other 3 how to play. Teaching this game takes quite a while, but they all are great gamers and picked it up quickly. Lots of fun and there was no more than 5 points separation at any point in the game, first to last...until final scoring. Ahhh, the power for the fish scoring at the end! I warned them...laugh

Day #12 - Gameday w/ our main game group!

There were only 4-5 of us waiting on the latecomers and I suggested this as I'd heard really good and really bad things about it, ever since we got back from GenCon. This also would be the closest that Amanda had ever had come to playing an in-person RPG (as opposed to video game RPGs which she's played a bunch of).

The long and short of it was that 2 more showed up and we added them to the game and it isn't the best with...6 player (I think). Too much downtime. But I bet this would be way more fun 2-4 player. Even so, Amanda enjoyed it and I did too, save for the downtime. Oh and we fought the main guy 4 times, beat him each time, but he escaped each time, too. Blargh!

Day #12 still -

We tried to play this @GenCon...in fact, we met the designer and we had plans to play it with him on Sunday morning, but he never did text us so, alas, it wasn't until this that we were able to finally try it out. The theme was interesting to the both of us and I heard really great things about it, so we both were stoked to try the game!

A couple of our buddies had Kickstarted this and literally, seconds before Justin was going to leave to come to gameday, his copy got delivered. Yay us!

In a nutshell, you're a scientist in a lab, making various compounds, which score you points. Yeah, I know, dry as hell, right? Not at all, my friend! It was a really, really cool game. We played a 4 player game and we found the rules to be pretty simple. We only had one question from the rules the whole game.

Highly recommended and we'll be picking up a copy down-the-road, for sure!

Day #12 -

Ah, finally getting to try this behemoth! We were lucky enough to get in on the pre-order for the newest printing of this (along w/ & Cetera), but knew we wouldn't have it for a number of weeks, so we did what any of y'all would do; we asked a buddy of ours from the south part of town to come on up w/ his copy and teach this to us!

We had planned this for a couple of weeks and were anxiously awaiting this Saturday. When Chad showed up w/ this, the first thing that grabs your attention is the size of the box. It's Antiquity size huge. I knew it has approximately 1,439,400 pieces, but still, that's a damn big box!

We set everything up on the big table in the basement and Chad got to teaching us. This game is a game of logistics. I wouldn't be surprised if UPS or FedEx uses it in some of their training. Build A to get resource B, Then build C and use B at building C to produce D. So on and so forth. It seems pretty complex at the beginning, but 2 rounds in, it made sense. The 'tech tree' is pretty involved (thankfully, we didn't use any of the expansion in our first game, which adds a whole lot to an already DEEP tech tree), but makes sense as you get further into the game. Amanda felt really overwhelmed early, but by the end of the game, she had it down and ended up being right there in the thick of the final scoring. It's long (5 hours or so w/ rules explanation), but worth it to us. Definitely would NOT be everyone's idea of fun, but we like it. thumbsup

Very glad we have this en route from Joris & Co.

I'll write more about this later tonight, but in the mean time, just know that, imho, it's absolutely worthy of the praise this game gets!

Day #13 - Our game of UKC ended a good bit earlier than the other game of UKC at the same table, so Tony offered to run me through one of the short, early scenarios in this game.

I love the large counters and the extremely high detailed map. Beautiful, intuitive mechanics and we had fun playing it. Too early to say whether I'm a big fan or not, but it wasn't a chore playing it. Basic, but fun. Looking forward to getting more into the meat of the game and adding artillery, tanks, etc. TBD on this, but a good way to spend an hour while the other fellas finished up their game.

Really fun wargame day!

Day #17 - It'd been almost 3 months since our group of 5 all made it to gamenight on Thursday, so we had quite the layoff from our 6th to our 7th game, which was tonight.

I don't want to put any spoilers in, but I will say this: in the middle of the battle which would have given Chuck his first victory, something happened that, literally, changed everything. Epic, epic game and Amanda came back from the brink of elimination to claim victory! The only downside is she had to plow through my troops to do it. Booooooo!

Sadly, Chuck is still searching for his first victory. cry
