Welcome to the September / October 2013 edition of the DVG P500 update list!

Thanks for checking out my list - please give a thumbsup if you find the list useful.

Hornet Leader: Cthulhu Conflict arrived from the printer and was shipped out - I know I already have my copy! Battle for Stalingrad should be back from the printer in about a month. The Cards of Cthulhu successfully was funded on Kickstarter and should go to the printer soon.

Here is this month's summary:

Releases:

- Hornet Leader: Cthulhu Conflict

At the Printer:

- Battle for Stalingrad

New on the List:

- None (although we are expecting Warfighter to go up on Kickstarter soon!)

I've also asked you to add links to your new pictures, reviews, session reports, after-action reports (AARs), etc. of your recent Dan Verssen Games gaming experiences to the monthly P500 Geeklist - and I would select a favorite.

And this month's winner is:

This is James 2nd win in my monthly contest - maybe he has a friend to whom he will give the dice.

He won for his review of Hornet Leader: Cthulhu Conflict, which can be found here: The Chaos and Insanity of Cthulhu Conflict.

And I always throw in 8 Geekgold for a new microbadge - hopefully for your favorite DVG game!

The offer still stands! Link your pictures, reviews, session reports / AARs to this list and you too may win the dice and some Geekgold! Remember, it doesn't have to be for a game on the list - any of your favorite DVG games will work for this!

And in case you want to subscribe to the monthly announcement list, it can be found here: DVG (Dan Verssen Games) P500 Subscription List.

Thanks for taking the time to check out this list - so Kick the Tires and Light the Fires!

Description (from 30,000 feet): The Battle For Stalingrad puts you in the rubble-strewn streets as the German forces fight through one block of the city after another. The only hope for both sides is to secure the city before they run out of blood and food.

Number of Players: 2

Pre-orders: At the Printers!

Kickstarter: Launched 3/17 with a goal of $4000, ended 4/29; met its funding with a total of $5741.

Overview: From the DVG website: The Battle for Stalingrad lasted 200 days, from July 17, 1942 to February 2, 1943. Hitler himself had ordered the capture of the key Soviet city, and his armies were determined to carry out his orders. Opposing the German armies were the civilians and armed forces of Russia. In desperate house-to-house fighting the two sides fought, bleed, and froze in the chilling Russian winter.

As the game unfolds, you’ll see one section of the city after another ground into rubble by your ceaseless fighting. As the city deteriorates, the amount of supplies generated for your men decreases. Supplies are the lifeblood of your army. Without them, you cannot move or attack, and you’ll suffer higher casualties in combat.

In the end, you’ll be scrambling through the ruins, as much in search of food as the enemy.

Key Design Features:
An excellent 2 player game.
Low complexity rules that are perfect for both serious and casual gamers.
Intuitive, fast-playing game system
Play time: 60 minutes

Components:
165 Full Color Cards
1 Full Color Counter Sheet
Full Color Rulebook

Pre-order Price / MSRP: $31.99 / $39.99

Link to DVG website: http://www.dvg.com/.sc/ms/dd/ee/36/Battle%20For%20Stalingrad

My take: Currently at the printers - according to a Kickstarter update today (10/8), this game is expected in the next 3 - 4 weeks.

Description (from 30,000 feet): Based on H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos, in this card game you select an Investigator, and battle the invading Cthulhu Minions and Horrors while building up a team of Followers to help you.

Number of Players: 1 - 4

Kickstarter Launched 8/5, with a goal of $7,000. Ended 9/4 and was SUCCESSFULLY FUNDED at $27,613.

Overview: From the Kickstarter page: The The Cards of Cthulhu is a solitaire card game that pits you against the forces of The Great Cthulhu and other Elder Gods. You will battle Cultists, slay Minions, banish Horrors, seal the Gates, and protect our world from the enveloping insanity that threatens to consume us all!

The Cards of Cthulhu is a great game for any gamer ages 12 and older. It doesn't matter if you are a rookie investigator or a battle-hardened investigator that has devoted your life to fighting the Great Cthulhu. Each game ends with you saving the world, or dooming us all to eternal torment, in 30 to 45 minutes for solo games, and 60 to 90 minutes for multi-player games. The Cards of Cthulhu was designed by first-time designer Ian Richard.

When you play, you get to choose from 1 of 8 different Investigator character cards. Each Investigator comes with his or her own unique ability to give them that special edge needed to save the world. Will you be the Soldier, skilled at slaying Minions, the Psychic, who can see the future, or the Psychiatrist whose mental fortitude can resist the otherworldly assaults on his mind?

You then layout the 4 Cult Boards, one each for the Elder Gods, Cthulhu, Arwassa, Yog-Sothoth, and Chaugnar Faugn. These 8.5" x 11" full color sheets organize the forces of each Elder God as they enter this dimension.

You are now ready to play!

Each turn, you draw 4 cards from the deck.

There are Minion cards, which are the foot soldiers of the Elder Gods. While they are not individually powerful, when enough of them gather on a Cult Board, they are able to summon their Elder God, and that ends the game.

There are also Horrors. These are powerful creatures from beyond the stars. Each Horror will batter away at your sanity and require special efforts to defeat.

The deck also includes Gates. Gates are special cards that force you to draw extra cards each turn.

On the good side, there are cards in the deck that will aid you in your struggle!

There is a Follower for each type of Investigator. These are less experienced Investigators new to the conflict. Each of them has a special skill you can draw upon. Also, if all else fails, you can use each of them to absorb a wound or sanity attack that otherwise would have gone to your Character.

Finally, there are Items. These are relics and rituals possessing great power. When properly understood, you can use these items to support your struggle. Beware however, because some of these items are cursed!

Components:

8 - Investigator cards
8 - Follower cards
10 - Item cards
8 - Cult Gate cards
4 - Minor Horror cards
4 - Major Horror cards
4 - Unspeakable Horror cards
60 - Minion cards

7 CUSTOM CTHULHU DICE - These are your Health, Body, or Spirit dice. You'll roll these to resolve your attacks on the foes plotting your destruction.

4 CULT BOARDS - More amazing artwork! Each of these 8.5" x 11" sheets features a piece of Cloud Quinot artwork of an Elder God. These sheets are vital in organizing the cards for each Cult.

3 METAL CUSTOM CTHULHU COINS! - Use these to track the Experience Investigator earn from battling Cthulhu's Otherworldly Foes!

1 PLAYER HELP SHEET! - Holds vital game information to assist you in defeating your foes!

RULE BOOK - The rule book is usually one of the least exciting components of a game, but this one is special. This rule book is written, proofed, set, and available for you to read - right now. This is where you can join the creative process of making this game a reality. If you read through the rule book, and a rule isn't clear... email us! We'll take a look and make edits to clarify the rule. We want to do everything we can to make this the best game ever and having a clear set of rules is vital.

STRETCH GOALS - you'll have to check out the Kickstarter to see the list!

Pre-order Price / MSRP: $31.99 / $39.99.

Huey Leader

Description (from 30,000 feet): The latest addition to the Leader Series series of games, Huey Leader puts you in the cockpits of the Vietnam War’s best Close Air Support aircraft. In Huey Leader, fly search and destroy missions to attack enemy troops, fly missions to deploy US ground troops into hostile Landing Zones and then provide Close Air Support to help the troops complete their mission, and even fly resupply missions to keep US Forward Bases supplied.

Number of Players: 1

Pre-orders: 81 out of 300 (+9, 3rd month on the list)

Overview: From the DVG website: Huey Leader is based on our popular Thunderbolt-Apache Leader game system. If you've played TAL, you'll be up and flying missions against the Vietcong in minutes.

The game places you in command of the pilots and aircraft of a squadron of U.S. Close Air Support (CAS) aircraft.

A major part of the game is mission planning. You decide how to arm your aircraft and which pilots are best for the mission. Pilots are rated for skill level. Deciding which pilots to fly each mission is a major consideration. Your pilots will become fatigued with every mission. If you fly a pilot too often, his skills will degrade. Your pilots also gain experience with every mission flown. This makes for some great decision-making. Should you keep flying the top pilots and further fatigue them to get the job done, or fly the new guys to prep them for the tough missions ahead?

Missions are quickly resolved using an area movement system to display tactical combat over the target. Speed and realism take top priority in this game. Terrain cards randomly generate each battlefield. The cards include mountain ranges that block lines of sight from both you and the enemy forces. If you plan it right, you get to fly nap of the earth through the canyons and come screaming over the ridgeline to rain fire down on the enemy before they can react. Beware! During each battle enemy air defenses will pop-up on the map to ruin your day, so watch were you’re flying!

You get to resolve every shot taken at you by enemy AAA, and every air to ground attack you make against the enemy targets. Each enemy tank, APC, Infantry Squad, Machinegun Nest, etc is represented by its own counter on the battlefield.

While performing each mission, you get to decide how your pilots engage the enemy Vehicles, Troops, and AAA Sites. This makes for some tough choices. Do you hit the high value targets first, or take out the enemy AAA assets first?

Your aircraft are usually able to survive more than one attack. These aircraft are rugged and made to soak-up damage. This also factors into your decision-making. How long should you loiter over the target blowing-up enemy targets before heading for home? If your aircraft is too shot-up, it may not be able to fly for days.

Huey Leader features an operation combat sheet that tracks the progress of enemy formations attempting to overrun your sector. You get to select the formation you want to engage each day and assign the air assets you think are best suited to the task.

We’ve included the cards for every pilot to progress in experience from Newbie, to Green, Average, Skilled, Veteran, and Ace!

Key Design Features:
An all-around excellent solitaire game.
Manage your pilots as well as your hardware to be a successful squadron commander.
Intuitive, fast-playing game system.

Huey Leader includes the following aircraft:
UH-1 Iroquois
CH-47 Chinook
AH-1 Cobra
OH-6 Cayuse
A-1 Skyraider
AC-47 Spooky

Component List:
165 Full Color Cards
2 Full Color Counter Sheets (352 counters)
3 Full Color Counter Sheets with Terrain Hexes (18 counters)
22” x 17” Full Color Tactical Sheet
1 Full Color Air Base Sheet
1 Full Color Player Log Sheet

Scheduled Campaign List:
Westmoreland's War 1/1965
Operation Hump 10/1965
Khe Sanh 1/1968
Tet Offensive 1/1968
Easter Offensive 3/1972
And more!

Pre-order Price / MSRP: $71.99 / $89.99

Link to DVG website: http://www.dvg.com/.sc/ms/dd/ee/69/Huey%20Leader

My take: +9. There seems to be a lot of interest in this built upon the success of Thunderbolt Apache Leader. Although it really could use a preliminary page here on BGG!

Description (from 30,000 feet): Gato Leader moves the Leader series to Pacific waters, letting players lead a group of American submarines against the Empire of Japan. The core system of the game is built on U-Boat Leader and will be familiar to players of other Leader games, allowing them to get into the game quickly. It includes 4 campaigns, listed below, spanning 1942 to 1945.

Number of Players: 1

Pre-orders: 95 of 250 (+7, 17 months on the list)

Overview: From the DVG website:
"It was to the Submarine Force that I looked to carry the load until our great industrial activity could produce the weapons we so sorely needed to carry the war to the enemy. It is to the everlasting honor and glory of our submarine personnel that they never failed us in our days of peril."
- Admiral Chester Nimitz.

"Execute unrestricted air and submarine warfare against Japan."
- Admiral R. Stark, Chief of Naval Operations, December 1941.

The American submarine campaign in the Pacific during World War II was a major contributor to the ultimate defeat of Japan. During the war, American submarines comprised less than two percent of the U.S. Navy, but sank almost 60 percent of the Japanese merchant marine and more than 30 percent of Japan's navy, including eight aircraft carriers. A major portion of the game is determining where to send your submarines. Do you send your boats to the distant, better-defended, merchant-rich Japanese Home Waters, or do you hit the convoys supplying the far-flung Japanese bases? You can spend Special Operations Points to upgrade your submarines, concentrate intelligence resources, and send your submarines on special missions, such as mine-laying and hunting the Imperial Japanese Navy.

When a patrolling submarine encounters an enemy force the action then shifts to the tactical display where the submarine tries to close with and attack merchants while avoiding the escorting warships. When an attack starts you will have an idea of the number and general type of ships in the group, but you have to close with the ships to identify the ships and decide which ones are worth firing torpedoes or guns at. In addition to fighting the enemy, your submarines also have to deal with your own torpedo problems, including dud torpedoes and ones that turn on your submarine.

Gato Leader includes the following U.S. Navy submarine types:
S Class
Narwhal Class
Permit Class
Salmon Class
Tambor/Gar Class
Gato/Balao/Tench Class

Gato Leader includes four campaigns covering different stages of the Pacific submarine war:
- Holding the Line: Submarine operations from Australia during 1942
- Against the Sun: Submarine operations from Pearl Harbor during 1942
- Turning the Tide: Submarine operations from Australia and Pearl Harbor during 1943
- Setting Sun: Submarine operations from Pearl Harbor during 1944 and 1945

Components:
110 Full Color Cards
176 Full Color Counters
Tactical Display Sheet
Ship Display Sheet
Player Aid Sheet

Pre-order Price / MSRP: $55.99 / $69.99

Link to DVG website: http://www.dvg.com/.sc/ms/dd/ee/58/Gato%20Leader

My take: +7 - solid, steady growth month after month.

Description (from 30,000 feet): This is the 4th entry in the Field Commander Series of solitaire games, but the 1st naval one. The game spans the Pacific War from January 1942 until the September 1945. It consists of 4 campaigns ('42, '43, '44 and '45) that can be played as stand-alone games or as part of a linked series.

Number of Players: 1

Pre-orders: 305 out of 425 (+6, +106 the last 17 months)

Overview: From the DVG website: At the start of the war, Nimitz faces a Pacific Ocean on the brink of disaster. The Imperial Japanese Navy has just delivered a devastating attack against the US fleet at Pearl Harbor, and little stands in the way of total defeat for the US in the battle for the Pacific. In the months to come, the situation will spiral from bad to worse. Nimitz will see the Japanese score one victory after another as they march across the Pacific, until only Midway and Hawaii stand between them and the West Coast of the US.

Success depends on the vital balance between strategic and tactical focus. You must move your forces across the maps to achieve your strategic goals, but you mus also out-think your opponents on the battlefield.

Each campaign has its own unique set of force counters that accurately detail the ships, air groups, and army units that participated in the war. The ship counters are a rectangular 0.625" by 1.25". Air groups and land units use 0.625" by 0.625" counters. Each ship counter represents 1 named aircraft carrier, 2 named battleships, 2 named cruisers, or a destroyer or submarine group. Each air counter represents 1 named fighter or bomber group. Each land counter represents 1 named division.

Components:
1 Super-sized Full Color Mounted Map (25.5" x 22") - 6 panels!
6 Full Color Counter sheets
1 Full Color Battle Map Board (8.5" x 11")
1 Full Color Player Log Sheet
1 Rulebook
1 10-sided die

Pre-order Price / MSRP: $74.99 / $99.99

Pre-order Bonus: Get a deluxe mounted Battle Map Board fit for a Fleet Admiral! If you pre-order Nimitz through the DVG web site, you will also receive a deluxe mounted version of the Battle Map board. The mounted Battle Map Boards will not be available later.

Link to DVG website: http://www.dvg.com/.sc/ms/dd/ee/51/Fleet%20Commander%20Nimit...

Description (from 30,000 feet): The latest addition to the Leader Series series of games, Israeli Air Force Leader (IAFL) puts you in the cockpits of the Israeli Air Force from 1948 through modern day, and into the near-future. The game includes the following campaigns: 1948 Arab-Israeli War, 1956 Suez Crisis, 1967 Six-Day War, 1973 Yom Kippur War, 1982 Lebanon War, 1991 (hypothetical) Desert Storm, 2006 Lebanon War, 2013 (hypothetical) Syria. Included are all the IAFL aircraft used throughout the years from P-51s to F-35s!

Number of Players: 1

Pre-orders: 119 out of 250 (+0, +35 the last 17 months)

Overview: From the DVG website: A major part of the game is mission planning.

Priority is placed on speed and realism. You get to resolve every missile launched at enemy bandits, and every air to ground attack against the enemy target. You also get to resolve the enemy SAM, AAA, and Bandit attacks against your aircraft.

While performing each mission, you get to decide how your pilots engage the enemy Bandits, SAMs, and AAA Sites. This makes for some tough choices. The more suppression munitions you haul to the target, the safer your pilots will be, but you will be able to load fewer munitions to destroy the target.

Included are cards for every pilot to progress in experience from Newbie, to Green, Average, Skilled, Veteran, and Ace! If you’ve played Hornet Leader or Phantom Leader, you’ll make an easy transition into IAFL.

Special Features:
Invasion Targets - Some target cards, such as tank formations, have an Invasion rating. If you do not destroy these targets quickly, they will overrun Israel and end your campaign.
Escalation Targets - These targets are worth extra VPs and bonuses, but you risk international backlash if you attack them.

Components:
330 Full Color Cards
2 Full Color Counter Sheets (352 counters)
8 Full Color Campaign sheets
11" x 17" MOUNTED Tactical board
Full Color Player Aid Sheets
Rulebook
10-sided die

Pre-order Price / MSRP: $69.99 / $89.99

Link to DVG website: http://www.dvg.com/.sc/ms/dd/ee/53/Israeli%20Air%20Force%20L...

My take: 0 new pre-orders - of all the Leader Series games, this one seems to be having the most difficult time generating pre-orders. And I really, really love the concept for this one - taking place in the air space over Israel from 1948 to modern day!

My take: Even though this has only had 1 new pre-order in the last 10 months, Dan said last month that he was hoping that the files would still get sent to the printer by the end of the year - which could mean delivery to customers by Q2 2014.

Description (from 30,000 feet): This is the 2nd game in the DVG Frontline series of tactical WWII ground combat card games. It covers small unit action during the battle for Guadalcanal. Take the fight to the Pacific!

Number of Players: 1 - 6

Pre-orders: 54 out of 250 (+0, +0 the last 17 months)

Overview: From the DVG website: Each player commands a squad of 4 to 10 American or Japanese soldiers and vehicles. Each card represents one soldier or vehicle. Each unit has inherent actions each turn including moving and attacking with different modes of fire. An action card deck enhances basic actions, and provides units with spur of the moment options.

The game uses counters to illustrate vital game information such as wounds, range, ammo, command, and morale. The range system is easy to use and simulates the movement of forces on the battlefield.

Frontline can also be played solitaire using the enemy Tactic cards. These cards give general, specific, and conditional orders to the enemy troops based on the current battlefield situation.

You can create battles by purchasing your starting forces, playing pre-made scenarios, or using the balanced randomized engagement rules.

Game Art: Wan Chiu has created the outstanding artwork seen throughout the game.

Components:
165 Full color cards (63mm x 88mm)
1 Full color counter sheet
Rulebook (Full Color)

Pre-order Price / MSRP:
$47.99 / $59.99

Description (from 30,000 feet): The year is 2021. Environmental upheavals, accelerated resource depletion, and escalating warfare have destabilized world politics past the point of no return. Political alliances have long since dissolved as each power block struggles for survival. In this declining world, technological advancement has ground to a halt, while the world’s armed forces make do with the weapons available from bygone decades. You enter this desperate struggle for survival as the leader of one of the six remaining factions.

Global Domination uses the "deck Building" game mechanic used by some popular recent games like Dominion.

Number of Players: 2 - 6

Pre-orders: 37 out of 250 (+0, +2 the last 17 months)

Overview: From the DVG website: Global Domination has an Axis and Allies level of difficulty, so it is easily playable by new people or experienced gamers. Each game lasts about 1 to 2 hours and supports 2 to 6 players.

The game also plays very intensely because a game only lasts 6 turns. This means that everyone knows they have to make each turn count. You score points at the end of each of the 6 game turns, so game play is very intense.

Deck building is very cool. It takes all the good and none of the bad from collectible card games. In a deck building game, you lay out the different types of cards on the table, and everyone starts with the same handful of cards. As the game plays, you get to select which cards on the table you wish to add to your individual deck, thus creating your own means of winning the game.

To add an additional decision point, deck building games might come with 20 card types in the box, but you randomly select 12 for any given game. Figuring out the best strategy based on the cards in play, and what your opponents are doing is the challenge.

Game Fiction: Well-known author and friend, Matt Forbeck has been kind enough to create the flavor text for the cards and the background story included in the rulebook. (www.forbeck.com)

Game Art: Paul Hoefener has done an outstanding job creating the game’s retro science fiction look. (www.paulhoefener.com)

Components:
110 Full Color Cards
22" x 17" MOUNTED game map
2 Full Color Sheets of Counters
Rulebook

Pre-order Price / MSRP: $39.99 / $49.99

Pre-order Bonus?: If you pre-order Global Domination through the DVG web site, they’ll include 150 Doomsday markers with your order. You can use these markers instead of the cardboard counters included in the game

Link to DVG website: http://www.dvg.com/.sc/ms/dd/ee/44/Global%20Domination

My take: This game is set in the year 2021 - they may want to push that back a little so it doesn't match the release date.

Description (from 30,000 feet): Down In Flames turns on the Afterburners! Down In Flames - Locked-On expands the game series into the jet-era. Locked-On retains the fast-paced game play of WWII Down In Flames and adds the high-speed excitement of jets.

Down in Flames is DVG's tactical air combat card game. Down In Flames places each player in the cockpit of a fighter as they enter combat against other aircraft. By playing cards, you gain advantageous positions on your targets, fire your guns, launch your missiles, and send them down in flames!

Number of Players: 2 - 6

Pre-orders: 110 out of 250 (+2, +19 the last 17 months)

Overview: From the DVG website: The game is based on a unique action-reaction card mechanic. Each card can be countered by specific other cards. At the bottom of every card is the list of cards it is allowed to cancel. This makes for exciting card play back and forth between players...

Player #1: "I Play an In My Sights. If you don’t stop it, you’re going down."
Player #2: "I counter with a Barrel Roll."
Player #1: "I react with a Yo-Yo."
Player #2: "You got me."

Each aircraft is accurately simulated with several ratings including: Performance (the maximum cards you can hold), Thrust and Afterburner (the maximum cards you can draw each turn), Guns (how good your gun is), Electronic Warfare (your passive dfensive electronics capability), Counter-Measures (your active defensive electronics capability), and missiles (the number and types of missiles you carry).

The air combat is simulated using a Positioning system that allows aircraft to be Advantaged, Tailing, Disadvantaged, or Tailed in relation to other aircraft. An aircraft’s position determines if it can attack, and which types of missiles it can launch.

The game uses a simple Altitude system to add this vital aspect of air combat. Aircraft get to draw cards when diving, and must discard cards when climbing.

So, how do missiles work in Down In Flames?
In most air combat games, the game grinds to a halt when a missile is launched. Charts must be referenced, complex calculations must be performed, etc. Not so in Down In Flames!

There are 2 types of missiles: Heat Seeking and Radar Homing. Heat Seeking missiles do better when fired from behind the target, and Radar Homing do better when fired from in front of the target. Each missile draws a mini-hand of cards when launched. The number of cards it gets is based on your Position and the EW rating of the target.

The targeted played must play cards to defeat your missile’s hand or get destroyed.

Here’s an example:

My Israeli F-4 Phantom is on the tail of an Iraqi F-1EQ. I play a Tone card. The opposing player looks through his hand for a card that will respond to a Tone card. He plays a Break card. I respond with a Break of my own. He does not respond. I now have a choice. I can choose to launch a missile or not. I look at my Israeli F-4 card and see that I have 2 Shafrir II missile counters. He might be bluffing. Maybe he has a great card that will defeat my missile shot once it’s off the rail. I decide to take a chance and launch one at him. I move a missile counter from my F-4, place it by his F-1, and declare "Missile Launch!"

I draw a hand of cards for my missile. From the Tailing position, the missile gets 3 cards. However, his F-1 has an Electronic Warfare (EW) rating of 1. So I only draw 2 cards. All missile attacks also have an inherent "Missile" card that is the first card always played for them.

I declare "Missile". He responds by discarding one of his two Counter-Measures counters from his F-1. Counter-Measures will respond to Tone and Missile cards. I reply with a Scissors from my missile hand to defeat the Counter-Measures. He searches his hand in desperation, but does not have a card to play in response to my Scissors. My Shafrir explodes in his tail pipe, sending him, Down In Flames!

The game also includes Bombers that are used in the historical campaign games.

Components:
100 Full color Action Cards

Description (from 30,000 feet): Vendetta - New York Style is a card game for 2 to 6 players. Each player is a mob boss trying to take over the top spot in New York City. Vendetta is a low complexity "family" game. You can complete a game in 45-60 minutes, and the tone is very light and very socially interactive.

Number of Players: 2 - 6

Pre-orders: 22 out of 325 (+0, +0 the last 17 months)

Overview: From the DVG website: Hey! Look who’s here! Sit down, sit down! I gotta say a few things before they bring out the pasta. Have you ate here before? I know the owner. We go way back. Anyway, you’re a boss now, so there’s some things you gotta know or you’re gonna get yourself whacked. As you might have heard, the old man in charge of New York is, ah, gone. Ya know what I mean? So you, me, and our associates have gotta sort out who moves up the ladder. To move up, you gotta make a reputation so the other bosses fall in line. They ain’t gonna follow nobody who hasn’t gotten his hands dirty. Ah, wait a second, here comes the Spaghet...

...So, like I was sayin, you gotta smack around a few guys, earn their respect, and you’ll come out on top. Otherwise, well, it was nice knowing ya! Hey, pass the meatballs already. I’m starving over here!

By taking control of different places and wise guys in the "Neighborhood", you’ll build up your power. By Whacking (destroying) the opposing places and people, you’ll weaken your opponents. If you’re good enough, you’ll be able to Whack one of their Bosses and win the game.

Here's the cool part of the game... The cornerstone to the game is the "Vendetta" mechanic. If I take control of the local Delicatessen, I gain its income and card drawing ability. If you then come and Whack (destroy) the Deli, you weaken me.

But wait! - There's more! When you Whack my Deli, you must give me some of your Vendetta counters. The specific number is noted on the Deli card. If I attack your places and wise guys in the future, I can spend your Vendetta counters to pump up my attack.

So, the more you Whack a player, the more bonuses they have in the future to Whack you back. This does 2 cool things. First, you get the "Grudge" and "Now it's personal" aspect of mob warfare. Second, even if a player gets Whacked hard, he still has the resources to make a comeback. This means that until a player wins, everyone has a shot (pun intended) at winning.

The design came together very fast, and the artist, Jerry, is doing a great job of capturing the light feel we're going for.

Components:
110 Full Color Cards with very cool artwork
1 Full Color Counter Sheet
2 Custom Engraved Vendetta "Whack" Dice
Rulebook

Pre-order Price / MSRP: $31.99 / $39.99

Pre-order Bonus?: Own a Piece of the Neighborhood: If you pre-order through the DVG website, you can have your name printed on the boxes, like normal. As a special bonus, for every 3 Vendetta games you pre-order, you can have your first or last name appear on one of the Neighborhood cards! (ie Dan’s Delicatessen, or Verssen’s Crew) This offer is limited to the first 50 people who pre-order 3 games. Disclaimer: As always, all names must be family friendly and we reserve the right to reject a name for replacement if we deem it inappropriate.

Link to DVG website: http://www.dvg.com/.sc/ms/dd/ee/34/Vendetta

My take: No orders in almost a year and a half - I'm afraid this game sleeps with the fishes.

Description (from 30,000 feet): The action-reaction card mechanic of Down in Flames goes all Norse mythos! Ragnarok is Upon Us!

Number of Players: 2 - 6

Pre-orders: 20 out of 250 (+0, +0 the last 17 months)

Overview: From the DVG website: You gaze across the once peaceful lands as you strap on your heavy armor and weapons. The leather creaks and steel clangs as you gird yourself for war. Overhead, storm clouds gather and the lightning slams into the earth in great forking bolts all around you. A howling north wind scourers the lands clean in preparation for the final conflict that will decide the fate of the world

You know in your heart that of all the battles that have come before, this will be the last, and greatest. This is Ragnarok, the final battle between the gods of men and the dark forces of the night.

With a wave of your massive hand you summon forth the heroes and Valkyrie that will fight at your side. The ground trembles under the footsteps of your mighty foes. There they are! On the horizon, grim giants, fell beasts, and the undead of countless battlefields approach in unending waves. Above the clatter of their weapons and armor a clear deep note pierces the sky. It is Heimdall’s horn! He is calling forth the gods and heroes to stand fast at the rainbow Bifrost Bridge and do battle.

Without hesitation, you stride forward to stand at his side with your brothers and sisters. You are an Aesir, a god and defender of humanity, and this is the time of legends!

Game Play: A few years ago, DVG realized that the core action-reaction card mechanic of Down In Flames would also be perfect for other interactive combat situations, but could never think of the right setting. Finally, a couple months ago, DVG came up with the idea of designing a game based on the Norse gods, their foes the Jotun, and the mythical battle to end all battles, Ragnarok. In this game, they’ve given the action-reaction system a twist in that the turn sequence is interactive, so as each attack is played, the next card played is actually a counter-attack that can inflict damage. This makes for a very intense battle system where every card can both attack and defend.

In this fact-paced card game, you take on the role of one of Norse mythologies greater gods such as Thor, Odin, Heimdall, or one of their Jotun enemies like Thrym, Fenrir, or Loki.

Once you are girded for battle, you will hack, slash, thrust, and grapple your way to victory!

Ragnarok is designed and packaged to be an economical social game. Instead of DVG's normal 9" x 12" box, this game comes in a 4" x 6" box. This is an ideal game for people who would like to socialize while playing a game. Each game takes only 30 to 60 minutes, so the game play is fast and furious.

The game’s components are designed to be language independent. The card titles are in English, but all the other game information is represented with iconic symbols and numbers.

Artwork: The game features the amazing artwork of Mike Campeau! Here’s a link to his web site: http://mikecampeau.cabanova.com

Components:
110 Full color cards (63mm x 88mm)
1 Full color counter sheet
Rulebook (Full Color)

Pre-order Price / MSRP: $31.99 / $39.99

Description (from 30,000 feet): U-Boat Leader takes the Leader series to new depths, letting players control a group of U-boats on missions in the Atlantic. The core system of the game will be familiar to players of other Leader games, allowing them to quickly get into the game.

The first printing is now sold out at DVG.com; this is a straight re-print of the game, not a "deluxed" version of the game.

Number of Players: 1

Pre-orders: 4 of 250 (+0, 8 months on the list)

Overview: From the DVG website:
"The only thing that ever frightened me during the war was the U-Boat peril." - Winston Churchill

The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest continuous campaign of World War II running from 1939 through to the defeat of Germany in 1945. It involved thousands of ships, stretched over hundreds of miles of ocean, and involved hundreds of convoy battles and single-ship encounters. During the struggle advantage switched back and forth between the U-boats and Allies as new weapons, tactics, and countermeasures were developed and implemented.

A major portion of the game is determining where to send your submarines. Do you concentrate your submarines in one or two areas to form wolfpacks or spread them out in the shipping lanes to increase the chances of finding contacts, or do you send them on special missions (such as mine-laying)? You can also spend Special Operations Points to support your submarines by adding search planes to help find enemy ships or by sending supply ships and subs (Milk Cows) to extend the endurance of the submarines. During longer campaigns you need to manage the U-boat patrol rotation to keep subs on station.

When a patrolling U-boat comes into contact with an enemy force it can call other boats in the same patrol zone to form a wolfpack or attack alone. The action then shifts to the tactical display where the U-boats try to close with and attack merchants while avoiding the escorting warships. When an attack starts you will have an idea of the number and general type of ships in the group, but you have to close with the ships to actually identify the ships.

U-Boat Leader includes the following type of U-boats:
Type IIB/C coastal submarines
Type VII A/B/C Atlantic submarines
Type IX A/B/C long-range submarines
Type XXI Elektro-boat

U-Boat Leader includes four campaigns covering different stages of the Battle of the Atlantic:

- The Battle Begins: covering operations at the start of World War II to about mid-1940.
- The Happy Time: covering the period from mid-1940 to mid-1941 when the U-boats and wolfpacks dominated the seas.
- Operation Drumbeat: covering operations off the American coast and in the Caribbean in early 1942.
- The Hunted: covering the time period when the tide starts to turn against the U-boats.

Components:
165 Full Color Cards
264 Full Color Counters
4 Campaign Sheets
Tactical Display Map
Player Aid Sheet

Pre-order Price / MSRP: $55.99 / $69.99

Link to DVG website: http://www.dvg.com/.sc/ms/dd/ee/59/U-Boat%20Leader

My take: It looks like the supply has finally dried up on this one - some on-line companies are now taking pre-orders for it. It looks like it might take a while for a re-print - I'm glad I already have my copy!
