PART 2 IN THE "EVER." SERIES.

The following games are MOST. NEEDY OF. A COMPONENT UPGRADE. EVER. (In the poster's opinion.)

You can only add one. And perhaps an honorable mention or two, but only one entry. Pictures are highly encouraged for this episode.

Please explain a bit why you think it needs a component upgrade. And perhaps some suggestions as to solve the problems you see in it.

Hopefully this will create some more great discussion.

Have fun and be nice!

I love this game. Love, love, love it. It has everything I love in a gaming experience: interesting conflict, fragile alliances, economic intrigue (in the form of investing, a la ), streamlined game play, and yell-out-loud moments. Ironically, I don't own it. I really want to, but they're so darn expensive from being OOP for so long. Now, if the components were a bit...nicer, I'd feel a little more inclined to bite the bullet, like today.

Here are the problems I have with the components:

1. There's a boob on the box cover.
I know, grow up and don't worry about it, right? Well, I game with a lot of people. I'm fine with it; it's an abstracted cartoonish drawing. But I know some of my audiences would not appreciate it, and I have to respect that. So I would either never bring it to those houses, or I'd have to cover it up with something--which is no big deal, I know. But it's a little annoyance that could have been avoided.

SIDE NOTE: Two years after this game, Peter Dennis also did the artwork for Wallace's Struggle of Empires (one of my Top 3 games) and he put a topless, chained slave on the box front. It's historically and thematically accurate for the game. So that's fine. However, while he did cover up the nipples with another art element, he left just a subtle amount of areola to draw the eye. Apparently Peter Dennis was into putting boobs on box covers during these years.

2. The tiles need to be a bit bigger. And the iconography should contrast more.
The tiles have very important information on them. Decisions are made throughout the entire game based on gauging the perceived strength/positioning in the game based on these tiles. It would be nice if they were slightly larger and contrasted better with their backgrounds, making it easier to measure players up at a glance. The color coordination is good with the family tiles. It's the military symbols and other bonuses printed on them that need improved.

3. The board is...not pretty. Nor is it all that functional.
I like that there's a board, albeit a rather unnecessary board. I would still want a board in a new edition. But I'd like to see a more classic looking board. Something along the lines of the map in Colonial: Europe's Empires Overseas or the new Francis Drake (I've never played either of those two games, strictly talking aesthetics). It doesn't have to be huge. Just attractive. And of course, you'd have to change the artwork on the tiles to match the new awesomeness of the board.

4. Cooler war pieces!
The most pivotal moments in the game are when two pieces are placed onto the map as a player declares WAR! between two nations of his choice. One is the defender and one is the attacker. These pieces should be a focal point in the design since they're placement is so dramatic. I don't know how, but make them awesome tools of war, not black and white rectangles. shake

If this game had a component upgrade, I would be first in line!

The childish artwork in this otherwise interesting game is totally off-putting. Honorable mention goes to Innovation: it's too light and fun a game to have such functional, austere, boring cards.

Speaking of boob on the cover...
This game needs an upgrade to bigger cards, and, perhaps bigger boobs.

(Sorry, couldn't help it, you left yourself wide open for this one).

Called a "7 Wonders Killer" and a frequently cited alternative to The Castles of Burgundy, the components leave a lot to be desired. The tiles are small (2/3 a Carcassonne tile), thin, glossy, and the iconography is tiny. The wooden barrel pieces are simply functional. The gameplay is fairly good for a sub-hour game, but the experience is forgettable due to the components.

A large box treatment of the game could have made this a contender for the top 100 rather than a forgotten or overlooked Alea medium box game.

Both editions of the game have asymmetrical backs for the mission cards. This means that it is easy for a player to put theirs in upside down without noticing, but also easy for the main player to notice. Even if it happens once by accident, it can ruin the whole game, as it becomes obvious who played which card. The art is pretty, but the card backs make the game error-prone in a frustrating way. I'm at the point of making a PnP version, even though I own the full edition, just to avoid that issue.

The artwork on the board is terrible. The art on the cards and pieces is worse. And the clips that hold up the pieces are unusable.

But for me its a fun game.

The board is fine, the player marker is in good quality, but seriously? The box scratches everytime it comes into contact with another box. The token is so thin it feels barely thicker than the player board itself. I would totally buy a "deluxe" version, twice, if they decide to do it.devil

The art doesn't bother me as much as it does some people, but for an art themed game, it sure coulda been done better. And it's OOP. And it's a great game. A candidate for an upgrade for many reasons.

It would be nice to see a revival of this content with miniatures instead of the cardboard tokens, much like the treatment they gave Dungeon Twister 2 Prison. Some cleanup in visual design would be cool too.

The board is pretty bad. It reminds me of the days of 8 bit graphics where you could only have 64 colors on the screen at once.

All the tokens are merely adequate. An original rondo game that might be a top 100 game if it had gotten good treatment with wood pieces and a map that didn't look like it came out of the early days of 3D CGI.

If you had to guess, you'd think this game came out in the 90s, but no, it's 2007, the same year as Agricola.

Where does one begin? The box art? SNORE

The player boards? The main board? The theme?

SNORE

A game that could have had a decent theme pasted on top. Excellent gameplay and plays quickly, my copy's only seen play once by me (with strangers at a meetup) and I really enjoyed it. That was back in January.

Personally, I don't care for the cardboard gold tokens; real wood pieces, or even round tokens (like Stone Age food) would be preferable.

The buildings are something of a hassle to shuffle and to organize so they all face the same way.

The cards are difficult to read from a distance, with their small text and weird color scheme.

And the insert is ridiculously over-designed, especially for those of us who carry game boxes on their side. A few poly bags and a few compartments (again, I think of Stone Age) would have worked so much better. I almost lost a corruption token from my Scoundrels of Skullport expansion on its very first play; that insert is somehow even worse than the first one. At the very least, a tight flat plastic piece that wedged on top of the components to hold them in place would have been nice.

Some people want the DnDeeples, but I actually don't care that they're cubes. Actually, they seem like they are almost identical to Pandemic first edition cubes.

this is really a great auction/snowballing game, but it has the most generic components. the design of the board is equally terrible with most of it displaying useless information. and if the rule book counts as a component, it is easily the worst of this game.

that said, i do enjoy it.
